Just doing some Sunday morning reading at overthemonster.com, and came across a thread discussing the Red Sox future at 3rd base. It seems like the fans are prepared to give Cabrera his monster contract when he hits FA. They think 8 years at 20 million a year should get the job done. There was also this proposed trade:

"I'd give up quality talent for Cabrera. Like Bard/Bucholz/Bowden (one of the three), Hansen/Delcarmen (one of the two), Ellsbury, Tavarez, Wily Mo, the Remdawg, Ben Affleck and the Dropkick Murphys. Then I'd sign him to a Manny contract, $160 million over 8 years. No question. I'm a big fan. The Marlins won't be able to afford him, so he'll be a FA after 2008. I think if we offer enough prospects and local celebrities I think we could get him next offseason."

Here's the link for those of you who want to read up on it:

So Red Sox are willing to let their owner pay Cabs, that's special.

Anyone here against paying Cabs?

Loria is against paying for anything.

i do believe he is paying for a large chunk of the new stadium...give him a break...cabs will be a marlin until he retires or is useless as a baseball player...whichever comes first

I do believe you're wrong.

Loria's paying around $40 million for the new stadium, the rest of the money the Marlins kick in come from rent payments and the naming rights, pretty standard practice.

If it's "pretty standard practice", why are you always crying about it?

Where is he crying? He simply corrected a poster.

Where on earth am I crying? I'm just pointing out a common fallacy that Loria is some great unprecedented owner in stadium contribution.

All fans would like that, but I don't think Cabs will be a Marlin for his career. If he's even still on the team after the next 2 seasons, and continuing to perform as he has....then the Marlins simply can not afford him...stadium or not. Heck, I'm uneasy about this season. I still question why our penny pinching owners brought in a 1 Million dollar player who's primarily a 3rd baseman. Seeing that Cabs would be expected to play in 150+ games, that kind of luxury just doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah and the Yankees are prepared to offer him the statue of liberty after that beating in 2003, what is there point exactly>? Do they really think they'll be the only ones in the hunt? I'll laugh if we get our stadium deal done and lock up Cabrera...I swear..

Doubtful. Was Cabrera ever quoted saying he wants a long term contract in Florida?

Yeah I believe he was, and I deleted the quote I had of that this morning lol.

Lets get a stadium and then see what happens. Loria is only contributing a minimal amount up front so there is a chance we get him signed. We could always sign him to a deal sort of like what the marlins did with Carlos Delgado. The first year or two could be around 10 million then have the next 5 years be alot higher. At that point we could trade him if we didnt think we could afford him. At the very least that would give us 4 more seasons with him.

Do the marlins control the rights for cabrera for this season and the 2008 season or is it up to 2009?

Through the 2009 season. The earliest he could play for a new team (assuming no trade) would be 2010.

If you can show me where, I'd appreciate it.

Cabrera has been quoted numerous times saying in effect (this is a paraphrasing) "The Marlins gave me my chance to play in the big leagues and win a world series and I would always like to be a Marlins player. This is my team."

Trying to find it is difficult without the exact phrasing to search for. But since someone asked (and I know it was asked of another) I'll try to find it too.

He hopes a trade can be avoided, and others share that sentiment. Cabrera's day was frequently interrupted by hugs as he renewed acquaintances, and fans flocked to him for autographs following the workout.

"I love this team," he said. "They gave me the opportunity to play in the big leagues and gave me the opportunity to play every day. I love to play in Miami, and I want to stay here."

I'm not saying I don't believe you. I'd just like to see where and, more importantly, when.
