Posted May 15, 200717 yr Fredi was on WQAM and was asked about Miguel's weight. Fredi said the weight is not affecting his play and that Cabrera is working on it. If it's not affecting his weight why would he be working on it? Last year he came in overweight and got in shape. This year he came in shape and became overweight.
May 15, 200717 yr I'm concerned about Miguel. His weight is one issue. His mental state is a question. He had a look on his third at bat last night that looked real bad. Maybe a hangover?
May 15, 200717 yr Haha it's possible that he had too much to drink before the game... But id know if his weight problem has anything to do with his swing. Yesterday he was just lunging after the ball; he has to stay back on the ball and unleash his power which should only increase with his body weight, should translate to smashed balls and demoralized pitchers all over the league.

May 15, 200717 yr Miggy's getting fat. I wouldn't be surprised to see him playing some 1B before the end of the season.
May 16, 200717 yr Miggy's getting fat. Tell me about it. Every year he looks fatter. And he's still got plenty of time to pack in more empanadas. He's only 24. Take a look at just how much he's changed over the years: Miggy at 19 Miggy at 20 Miggy at 21 Miggy at 22 Miggy at 23 Miggy at 24 Curious what he'll look like at 30? I have a feeling it'll be something like this: Miguel at 30
May 16, 200717 yr :lol good one Shaq. article in the Sentinel today about his weight also: Sun-Sentinel address the issue before Tuesday's game, Cabrera acknowledged he has been trying to slim down. He said he's at 250 and hopes to trim at least 10 additional pounds. The Marlins have spoken with him, but no one in the organization is interested in addressing the matter publicly, considering how sensitive Cabrera is about it. Plus, it's difficult to slam your best player when he has hit well over .300 most of the season. "Up to now it hasn't affected me," Cabrera said. "[The Marlins] always tell me, but I have to take things easy." .... "We're benching him for the rest of the season," Gonzalez joked. "He's going to manage today. I'm going to sit and watch him manage."
May 16, 200717 yr I've been a little worried about his weight since the start of the 2007 season. He needs to start working on it or his performance will suffer. He already is slower and defensively is liability since he can't get to the ball as fast. I don't think it affects his hitting that much, but the other aspects of his game depend on him slimming down.

But after he slimmed down last year he definetly played better D. And right now his D is sloppy, uninspired, and error filled. When we have ground ball pitchers on the mound he becomes a liability despite his bat. And when he slumps at the same time we may as well sit him with certain pitchers. Boone dosen't have his bat, but he is far better defensively at 3B. Just tell Miggy he is getting a much deserved "rest" to soothe that ego. In time Miggy will be on an AL team where he can be the DH and he can eat all he wants.
May 17, 200717 yr Article by Hyde about Miggy's weight: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...-sports-marlins Is his weight affecting his defense? Absolutely. But the whole weight issue has come up while he was in his slump, somehow linking the two, which is silly. Last season, Cabrera lost about 10 pounds and became considerably better defensively. He'll lose the weight. The last person I worry about on this team is Miguel (Cabrera, that is.)
May 17, 200717 yr He's on pace to look like a Tony Gwynn or Cecil Fielder in their later years. Hope he never gets to Matt Lecroy status.
May 17, 200717 yr On the radio, don't recall which show, they were commenting on the promotion they have in LA where the dodgers have an all you can eat buffet for right field ticket buyers included in the cost. So, when pondering whether this would be a good way to increase attendance here, it was asked if people would be interested. It may have been Curtis (maybe not) on QAM, who said, "sure, our third basemen for one would go for it"
May 18, 200717 yr Now I am going to comment - Miggy needs to lose atleast 10-15lbs. He is HUGE. I think he needs to lose more than that. 10 lbs. doesn't really show too much on a big guy like him. His defense has been downright embarrassing. Before anyone reminds me, I am fully aware and fully appreciate what a great hitter Miggy is, what he means to the team and I'm thrilled that he's a Fish. It doesn't make me miss the days of our great defensive infield any less.

May 18, 200717 yr He is going to explode right there at third base-and to clean up, who you going to call?
June 4, 200717 yr His weight doesn't bother me much. He's hitting .319 right now...11 homeruns...he's doing just fine. If you think Miggy's fat (and that it matters), what about Prince Fielder? that guy's huge and he's putting up big numbers.
