June 27, 200719 yr Meh, he's still a clown in centerfield. Trade for Gathright. You completely missed the thread starters point.
June 27, 200719 yr Meh, he's still a clown in centerfield. Trade for Gathright. You completely missed the thread starters point. Except for how I'm saying he's not adequate in centerfield whereas the thread starter felt he is. No correlation there at all. You are correct. :whistle
June 27, 200719 yr To keep starting Amezaga, a born infielder, in center field game after game no matter how adequate he is while players like Dukes are available is ridiculous. What is this great love affair with Dukes? Is it his .190 BA? His 2 out of 6 SBs? His 44 Ks to 33 walks? His .318 OBP? Or do people just like baseball players with police records? Maybe it's his career .284 BA in the minors? His 91 out of 123 SBs there? How dirt cheap he would be? His upside that's probably bigger than that of anyone else on the Marlins' roster right now? Try looking past his 184 ABs this year before making a post like this.

So I got carried away. But I think Dukes has a bigger upside than Hermida, personally.
June 27, 200719 yr Hating amezaga, pimping gathright? From Madman???? Bashing a far below average center fielder in Amezaga while saying trade for a perfect leadoff hitter who could patrol center at Dolphin Stadium as well as if not better than Juan Pierre did? How awful.
June 27, 200719 yr They say that the Marlin's field is a pitchers park. The reason being the wide open outfields, however this only holds up if you have the outfielders that can cover the ground. Our home field advantage is nutralized because our outfielders have limited range and questionable gloves. Perhaps this is one of the main reasons they struggle at home. You can say what you want about their offense, but pitching and defense wins championships.
June 27, 200719 yr That's what Alfredo Amezaga is doing in the leadoff spot. That's absolutely fine. And although some may vehemently disagree (and I could care less) he has become more than adequate in CF as well. His improvement from year to year has been awesome. Offense isn't our problem even though some say it is. It's our starting pitching (yes I realize tonight it wasnt). We are 2nd in runs scored, last in runs allowed. Pretty simple math right there. Now this isn't to say I would be against trading for a Dukes, Adam Jones, Carlos Gomez, Lastings Milledge, whatever.... Just sayin he ain't as bad as some of you make him out to be. I agree starting pitching is our biggest problem and I agree Alfredo has improved a bit leading off compared to hitting 7th or 8th but the lineup should not be constructed in a way to only maximize what your worst hitter does and that's what Fredi has done by having our worst hitters (Alfredo, Reggie and Carroll) getting the most PAs. Since the switch was done our run scoring has nosedived from 5.0 runs per game to 4.6 runs per game.

I would hate a leadoff hitter with a .444 OBP and absolute upper tier major league speed.

At least have a hard on for someone who could possibly be picked up.
June 28, 200719 yr The Marlins should have tried to trade for Gathright before the Royals called him up. He might have been cheap then, but he won't be now.
July 5, 200719 yr Hanley couldn't make that play at SS if the ball was hit in front of him. Good play Amez. too bad we lost today.
July 5, 200719 yr Author Hanley couldn't make that play at SS if the ball was hit in front of him. not saying Hanley does make that play, but you are underestimating his capabilities

July 5, 200719 yr elijah woods has tremendous potential. but he also has preston wilson written all over him. deffinitely not the solution to our centerfield problems, but who knows, he seems to have a world of potential. i would still content that centerfield is the least of our problems and almezaga is doing a fine job out there. i think we have more problems defensively at 3rd base, catcher ans shortstop and those need to be corrected. also, jacobs is a blackhole right now, he should be in triple A until he finds his stroke again.
