The Catch

Recommended Posts

I think it was an awesome catch by the fan. To be able to catch a ball like that WITH A CAP, while a player is in your face, is quite amazing.

I also think Hopper would have made that play. Replays show that he had his glove under the cap.

Thoughts?

Fan robs Cabrera with hat grab

July 20, 2007

MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Marlins fan David Fridkin might have robbed his favorite player of an extra-base hit Friday night.

With the Marlins leading Cincinnati 4-2 in the sixth inning, Miguel Cabrera hit a drive to deep right field. Fridkin leaned over the wall and caught the ball in his Marlins cap, intercepting it before right fielder Norris Hopper had a chance to make the play.

Umpires ruled Cabrera out because of fan interference. Fridkin, who said Cabrera was his favorite player, was ejected from the stadium.

"I did something that anyone else would do," said Fridkin, 21, of Miami.

He said he didn't feel that bad about trying to make the catch and didn't think Cabrera would be angry about the grab. He said he might keep the ball atop his television set so he can see it when he watches Marlins games and be reminded of the only ball he ever caught at a major league game.

"Not too bad," he said, "for not having a glove."

AP article on it.

The fan got carried away and stuck his cap out when the ball was in play.

The umps made the right call. The ball would have been caught. It did not affect the outcome of the game.

The fan was not kicked out of the stadium, he was escorted to another area of Dolphin stadium.

No big deal.

Also, as a general rule, fans should never interfere with the home team's player. (Example: Bartman's interfering with Alou)

Interfering with the visiting team's player making a catch of a foul ball in the stands is acceptable and is also a good idea.

Any home team fan (he had a Marlins cap on) who leans way over the wall to interfere with play = A douch bag

With that said, the RF'r was going to make the catch anyway. After watching several replays it was obvious to me he was going to catch it.

Good call by the umps

I can't believe they interviewed the guy. That just glorifies what he did. Hopefully it won't encourage others to do the same.

Me personally.. I am absolutely a baseball "purist" and I love my Florida Marlins, go to as many games as possible, know as much about their history as anyone...and you know what? I am attempting to catch that ball too. That is part of the thrill of being at a ball game, the thrill of the extremely small chance of catching a foul ball. I have no problem with it whatsoever.
