One second he's ranging far to his right and making a incredible sick throw to 1B and the next he's letting a routine grounder go right beneath his glove. Whoops! Games like this don't sting though. How can you expect to win a game in which you make 3 errors in one inning and leave FOURTEEN runners stranded on base. Another QS by Dontrelle wasted but that's a huge afterthought. This game was flat out ugly.

THAT is whats frustrating... youth and mistakes are excusable in your first year...not your second when your first year was a relative success...

THAT is whats frustrating... youth and mistakes are excusable in your first year...not your second when your first year was a relative success... Eh, I think in a round about way, it's good. This team can't be unchanged this year to next and expect to make serious noise. Maybe this forces a shakeup. I don't think we can win with both Jacobs and Willingham in the lineup, they're both 6 hole guys masquerading as a cleanup hitter. I don't think we can win with both Treanor and Olivo on the team. I don't think we can trust Dontrelle anymore to shut down teams in games we should be favored to win. I don't think we can build a rotation around flyballs and Pro Player anymore with such atrocious outfield defense. And, I do think it's good we're learning this now rather than next year. I'm glad we have the luxury of letting September be an open audition for a few spots, and I truly hope that we are aggressive with the callups, but I doubt we will since that costs money, and lord knows we're allergic to spending it. I'd love for us to kind of have an idea with what we have in De Aza and Gaby and even Volstad heading into '08. I'd love to see Carroll given one more chance to hit in-season major league pitching. For the first time in a while, I'm starting to get excited about the team. Miggy and Hanley make the games worth watching, and we're really starting to get to the point where we can look to '08, with a few tantalizing prospects.

That alone makes a huge difference.

While I don't agree with every little assertion you make, I'll agree with the gist of it. Moves need to be made, despite good things like De Aza and Hanley exploding offensively, and so forth. Defense overall (and I'm not sure how you do it) needs to improve. And while I disagree on your assertion about Dontrelle, because I think he can dominate again, I'd like to see someone brought in to take the pressure of being #1 in the rotation off of him.

August 20, 200719 yr I didn't see anyone bring this point of view up, so here it goes: I don't think DeAza should have sacrificed in the 8th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 0 out because of the situation that set up the automatic intentional walk to Miggy. The worst that could have happened would be a double-play, which, given DeAza's speed, was unlikely. So here were some possibilities if DeAza didn't sacrifice: 1. Base hit. Either bases loaded, or runner scoring with 0 out and runners on for Cabs . 2. Ground ball that gets the runner out at second. 1 out, runners on 1st and 3rd for Cabs. 3. Short fly-ball out. Runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out for Cabs. 4. Double-play. Runner on either 3rd or 2nd with 2 outs for Cabs 5. Walk. Bases loaded w/ 0 out for Cabs. 6. Hit by pitch. Bases loaded w/ 0 out for Cabs. 7. Error. Runners on base for Cabrera w/ 0 out. My point being, sacrificing in that situation is saying, "I'm leaving it up to Hammer to get the job done." Granted, Josh was 3/4 in the game at that point, but I would think a team would want to do everything possible to avoid the intentional walk to their best hitter in a crucial situation, especially since the Marlins have struggled with runners on 3rd and less than 2 out. The ironic part about it, and Tommy mentioned this during the broadcast, is if Uggla were batting behind Cabrera, DeAza probably wouldn't have sacrificed. Who would have thought a slumping hitter batting behind Cabs would have actually benefitted Miguel in that situation.

Look Mr. Gardner, we know it's you and we aren't buying the act. Plus, it's not just 1 IP and 0 ER, it that plus an error. Without that error it would have been a whole different inning. Remember Lee, when you point the finger at 3 other guys, there are 3 point right back at you...and your own fingers.

Anibal is the team's best pitcher, period. I really don't think it's even debatable at this point. With a torn rotator cuff he has the second best ERA on the team (and the team lead at the time). You can't be a good team after losing a player like that in a role of such consequence. We'll be markedly better next year getting 20-24 starts out of Anibal who will have a full rehab schedule going into '08, something he didn't have coming into this year because of his almost constant 'no throw' offseason.
