October 26, 200718 yr You need to open spaces on the 40 man prior to the winter meetings so that you have room to protect the new guys coming up. Otherwise you could lose them to the rule 5 draft.

We all wish Garcia good health when returns (if he returns) but at this point he's a question mark As for Zarate, it is somewhat puzzling since he raced through four levels of professional ball (JUP to MLB) in one season and then jettisoned. They did keep Marcos Carvajal who they picked up in Sept and whose claim to fame (at least multimedia-wise on MLB) is striking out six Mets in an appearance with the Rockies. But in the end you never know what's going on with stuff. You would think Zarate would have some value for a lateral position for pitcher trade but with an overflowing Rule 5 coming who knows what their thinking is. It seems though a number of teams are doing much the same thing, etting their 40 man down to 34-35-36 players so something is aplay here.

Unless he's got an injury that they are sure has seriously hindered his pitching ability, I don't see why they would give up on him so early, he definitely showed he had potential in the minors.
October 26, 200718 yr Perhaps the roster spot was perceived as more valuable than waiting to see what Garcia had when he returned. I'm just guessin' like the rest of us. I'm sure people noticed the Braves grabbed Chris Resop and dumped Chad Paronto.

October 27, 200718 yr Padres really know their RP. Hope that's not a bad omen. But, yes. Why the hell are we jettisoning guys when we have 40 man space? I really hope they've mapped out free agency, the Rule V, and trades to where they know they will need this space. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt until I see the final product. Hopefully this isn't a, let's dump Josh Wilson cause we don't care thing, and the guy turns into a useful back end bench/AAA depth player for next year.

I never really understood that one, especially since we didn't and haven't had any middle infield depth since then. His minor league numbers didn't look that bad for a middle infielder.
