...3. Jeremy Hermida continues to work his magic...by now, I'm guessing this is a skill...the guy must be in double digits already this year, with BROKEN BAT hits. :lol

This bat thing is getting ridiculous, and dangerous. I don't know what it is (well I do, these new bat designs are manufactured to provide maximum torque) but at some point the Commissioner's Office or the Rules Committee has to look at this as not being in the best interests of the game. I hate to say it but someone is going to be impaled by one of these flying projectiles sooner rather than later.

Yeah, it's the maple bats, I believe.

yeah tonights was really close to hitting Alfredo, who wasn't looking.

For the record, Hermida claims he is using the exact same bats he used last year.

WOW....... this little nugget is from the AP recap...

The Marlins lead the NL East, but South Florida has yet to take notice. Attendance was 10,696.

Just sad.... after the announcement of Hanley's signing, the Stadium deal, the winning team in 1st place all year. That really saddens me and upsets me even more because I do not live there anymore and cannot go to the games. Ohhh how I wish I could still goto games anytime I want...

Well, it doesn't help when the "expert" are telling the fans that this team is just hot for now and will ultimately fail. Even the local sports guys are saying it. On the flagship station of The Florida Marlins, I literally heard this:

"Hey! Go out and see your 1st place Marlins, even though they can only beat bad teams, even though their pitching can't hold up, even though they are playing way over their heads, even though they won't make the playoffs, even though they trade away your favorite players. Go see the Marlins!"

Yeah, f***ing thanks Dan LeBatard. This was the day after Peter Gammons came on the damn show and said that the Fish would be in contention in September.

I bet that helps attendance, when the show that leads in to the Marlins broadcasts put the team down.

Speaking of Alfredo.....STOP PLAYING HIM

Uh, as I recall he was one of our runs tonight. Not to say he couldn't do better, but his hustle got us one tonight.

Good comeback start for Hendrickson after two not-so-good ones but he's got to start getting ahead early in counts again and start getting deeper into games. This month, the Marlins have lost 7 games. 5 of them have come when the pen has to take over before the 6th inning. The pen's ERA in that situation: 4.07 (31 IP, 14 ER) and climbing.

It's a Tuesday, and first place or not, Arizona is not gonna be a huge draw. And we're also talking first place in May. Not to diminish the accomplishment at all, but if we're talking a first place team in late August or September that might also make a difference.

I know it should be seen as a big game, but to expect good attendance is to be in denial of the long standing reality. And everything that sucks about playing at Joe Robbie still sucks. Even the Hanley signing and the new Stadium deal can't change that at all. And if anything, people probably figure they can see Hanley some other time, since he'll be around for a while now.

About the actual game - great pitching aside from Pinto, but hey, you can't pitch great all the time. Gregg came up big though. Hendrickson does it both pitching and with the bat. Would've been nice to have another inning or two from him, but I'd rather he come out after 5 IP w/ 2R than go 6 IP w/ 4R.

Uggla wants his big money contract. He's close to halfway to his HR total last season. And that HR tonight was the winning run. He really deserves a lot more respect on this board (and everywhere else).

LOL And I expected the excuses to change from "They don't sign players long term so we have no reason to go see them", to something along these lines.

One thing you are right about. In late August or into September there will be a surge in attendance if we are still winning and near clinching a play off spot. UNTIL we clinch. Then it will be back to the norm until the play offs. It's just the way it is. Accept it. Unless it's the place to be seen; Home Opener, Home Closer, play off clincher, etc.; South Floridians are happy making our TV ratings look great. No need to make excuses and try to pass them off as reasons.

I openly admit to sitting there in the ninth inning playing solitaire on my phone so I didn't have to watch. (I snuck a peek or two :D )

Cantu made some really nice plays this evening. How people can fault Matt Treanor continues to be one of the mysteries I feel will never be solved here. Hanley looks just awful although that third out in the ninth was a thing of beauty. And I have to say I continue to be awestruck watching Lindstrom pitch. What was Omar Minaya thinking?

I thought tonight's crowd was up a bit from previous weeknight games especially since it isn't against a team like the Mets or Cubs who bring their own cheering sections along with the. This was pretty much a purely Marlins crowd tonight I would say it was a positive sign.

Agree on all counts. Except I was shielding my eyes in the 8th. I still lack the confidence in Gregg that others have. But I'm coming around. Slowly. And that 3rd out in the 9th was a routine play, IMO. Hit right to him. It seemed like a thing of beauty only because of the circumstances.

Now...Bring on Webb. Unfortunetly I'm not going to make this game. It is a real priveledge to watch some of the best in the game do their thing. But I did pass my tickets onto a couple friends. Had I known it was Webb's night I probably would have given them Tuesday's tickets. Oh well. Maybe next time. Because of some fluke in scheduling they are here again this year.

That would have been my initial reaction as well. But alot of players are using those maple bats right now and not all of them are shattering like his are. I think it's a combination of different things. Different woods, alot more companies supplying bats, different designs, etc... I agree with 2003, somebody needs to look into this BEFORE something bad happens. And if it happens to someone in the stands...

He could make a mountain out of all the broken bats he has. I suggest the nickname Jeremy 'Broke-bat mountain' Hermida. lol

gutted my e-mail was never read out on e-mail tuesday last night

"Is there any chance of Hanley dialling up the Yankees clubhouse to borrow Jason Giambi's gold thong to break out of his recent slump?"

LOL

Yeah, I wanted to go see Webb as well, but my fiancee really wants to see the American Idol finals. So I'm sitting this one out it seems, but I'll go see Haren tomorrow.

You must be referring to the fielder's choice that he grounded into. The guy couldn't hit a beach ball.

I think he was referring to the hustle that allowed that FC to be a FC instead of a DP and then scoring from first on that shallow double, which I'm sure Treanor would have had no chance of scoring on.

Yeah, but all he has is hustle. You know a guy is pretty bad when all you can talk about is his hustle.

Quite true quite true. But I think a hustler you can play in almost any position is still a valuable asset even with the offensive shortcomings.

While Amezaga's numbers weren't gargantuan maybe I misread the sense of the board last season but I think generally people here were satisfied with his numbers.

He's just having an off-year and perhaps it will turn out to be an off-two months, we'll see, but I'm not ready to write him off in any way.

Well, you could talk about his fielding...
