SEATTLE - The Marlins have agreed to terms with first-round draft pick Kyle Skipworth pending a physical, according to a source who has spoken with club officials.

Skipworth, a catcher out Patriot H.S. in Riverside, Calif., who the Marlins selected sixth overall, is on his way to South Florida, where he is expected to undergo a medical workup Thursday. An official announcement could come as early as Friday.

Skipworth should be in uniform with the Marlins' Gulf Coast Rookie League affiliate sometime this weekend.

Though Skipworth signed a letter of intent to attend Arizona State, from the outset he said he didn't anticipate any issues to emerge in contract negotiations, which began before the Marlins officially selected him.

Marlins say draft pick Kyle Skipworth a good catch

"I was blown away," Skipworth said on draft day earlier this month. "I'm very happy with it. My family is very happy with it. We're extremely close [to a deal]."

The 6-3, 195-pound Skipworth hit .584 with 12 homers and 44 RBI his senior season and got a state record 18 hit in as many plate appearances.

I bet if we throw him out to the wolves right now before he's ready he'll still be better than Treanor and Rabelo combined.

good to see them sign him early

last year dominguez took awhile to start and only played a month

looks like he can play in the gulf coast league and maybe move up to the NY Penn league

But I think Dominguez contracted mono, or something. And our 598th overall pick started out in the NY Penn League this year. But that may have alot more to do with him coming out of college and Skip coming out of HS.

Dominguez got mono this year and he is currently playing in Greensboro after coming back from the illness. Skipworth will start in the GCL and once he is comfortable they might move him to the NYPL with Jamestown.

Championship!

But seriously, good work getting it done, and quickly. :thumbup

Nice job, from what I remember, it took us very long to sign Dominguez.

Yeah wasn't it just hours away from the deadline when we finally got him signed ?

That's right. He held out til the 11th hour signing last year. But the NYPL is a short season league. Maybe next year starting there and then moving up? Think we may see him in Jupiter next year?

Correct. It seems he's heading to the GCL Marlins, but I am sure he won't be there too long. There are other 2008 draft picks that are already playing in Jamestown (NY-Penn league). My guess is that because he's a HS kid he's being brought along slowly into the Rookie league. The other guys that are playing in Jamestown are guys that came out of college this year.

Why is the NYPL called a short season league? Seems like a regular minor league schedule. And what is the main difference between the Grasshoppers and the Hammerheads?

They only play a 36 games schedule (starts late June ending early Sept)
