Enough with Mike Jacobs

YOUR 2009 Starting 1st baseman is.....Mike Jacobs

:banghead

I doubt it. I don't see us trading him because the guy is a bad baseball player and contending teams are not looking for bad baseball players. I think what will happen is that next year we wont offer him arbitration and he'll end up signing elsewhere for cheap.

I hope you are right, but this management just ticks me off. They are killing this franchise, just like they did in Montreal.

another crying thread...almost completely void of any intelligent thought or discussion...oh well

and your b*tching post made it so much better ? :banghead

This is not an impulsive thread...I'm basically just at the point that I'm sick and tired of watching Jacobs kill this team. His defense is inexcusable. IMO it would take a herculean effort with the bat to make up for his defensive shortcomings, and it's clear he's never going to be a guy who gives you quality at bats. We simply cannot let his defense keep costing us games. His play this year is virtually indefensible.

Guys, guys guys...you are missing his whole point of being here, and why he may actually stay. HE IS CHEAP !!! and he won't get crap in arbitration (if he is even eligible).

So get ready to hear.....

Some of y'all just don't get it. Nothing will change, this management likes it like this. They are making a killing and laughing all the way to the bank. If McPherson came up and we actually won a division, they would have to open the wallets. That is NOT on their agenda. :banghead

A) that isn't how arbitration works. As long as he comes in within reasonable guidelines for equivalent first year arbitration he'll be rewarded handsomely.

B) You have no idea what's "on their agenda". Nor do you have even a scant idea of what their finances are (as loathe as I am to quote Forbes who BTW thinks the Yankees are the losingest team in baseball by the way they do their numbers) says the Marlins are a break-even club averaging $ 7 million a year profit (read, pisshole in the snow) since $2002 and that's before interest, taxes and depreciation (not to mention repaying the remainder of the MLB loan on which both principal and interest have to be paid).

People have the misconception that loan has been wiped out. The last thing the Marlins want is for that to happen because the alternative is to share a big percentage of their profits with MLB when they move into a new stadium. I'm certain that part of the financing the Marlins are out packaging right now includes addressing that original loan.

C) We should be rooting like crazy for Jacobs to go on a tear right about now, have 22 homeruns by the ASG and raise his OBP over .300 because if you truly are tired of seeing him with the team the best thing that could happen is for him to increase both visibility and his trading value before the end of the trading deadline.

Well other teams think he is good. I don't know why but he has this rep of being the most underrated first-baseman in the league. I disagree but I would like for other teams to think so. He is cheap but he is also terrible. You can find a young stud that could be better than him for cheaper and then get rid of him. I'd take that over Jake to be honest with you. At this point, having Jacobs on the field feels like a handicap. Yea you need to take up space over at first but I think we'd be more successful with 8 guys on the field and have Uggla (now, Andino) run from second to first to catch all the balls thrown to first. Of course, I am just joking but I am trying to make a point. It is getting pretty bad.

lol elementary school tactics....don't like what people are saying so you insult them. Well done. Are there moderators on this board? Some people here get away with just about anything just because they've stuck around here longer. Seems like you aren't allowed to make criticisms of this team without someone insulting your intelligence or something equally absurd. Stick to baseball talk, people, leave the schoolyard insults where they belong.

no...im in the boat that says we should look for better defensive players...ive been in this boat for a long, long time now...

and trust me...im not "getting away" with anything here because ive been around longer...these threads a nightly occurance among a few posters and i think its sad and pathetic that as "marlins fans" they dedicate their time and energies into just trashing our players...

ill talk baseball all day long with anyone as long as they bring a reasonable argument to the table...and there isnt much reason in this thread at all

Cool...so lets talk.

Mike Jacobs is the worst defensive 1B in baseball, in many categories. So...if that's the case, you'd think the man would be helping out offensively. BUT...his .OBP entering today's game is a pathetic .264. Hanley Ramirez, Jeremy Hermida, Jorge Cantu, Josh Willingham, and Dan Uggla (all in our starting lineup) ALL have a higher batting average than Jake's .OBP.

Talk. :mischief

I think you truly believe this 2003, its not just joking around. You seriously believe the Marlins just "break even" ? I mean you really do believe this ?

Dude, no matter how you try to work your math out, it doesn't make sense that this franchise only breaks even, with a $ 20 million payroll. If that is the case then someone has their hands deep in the Marlins cookie jar, and Mr Loria needs to find out who.

(But I have a feeling he knows already) :whistle

I do have an issue believing that they are just "breaking even" given our payroll and the revenue sharing situation, I don't buy into uber "Loria wants us to not make the playoff" arguments because making the playoffs, especially this season, is ridiculously important to the Marlins, because by making a playoff run it'll show Miami how close we are and how baseball CAN be supported in Miami etc etc etc...

But I do think some of this money is being saved up, and I can only hope it's for the stadium expenses or something

There's this whole macro thing going on that the haters and the conspiracy theorists ignore which in a nutshell boils down to you make more money being successful than not. You can never get costs low enough to throw off the profit you can make by doing things the right way. They're f***** until they get into their new stadium.

There's something I'd love to be able to say that I can't, but there's a reason that any number of politicians and others against the stadium deal don't make as part of their argument that the Marlins are making tons of money and hording/stealing/pocketing it by the wheelbarrel load.

playoffs or not the only thing that shows anyone that baseball can be supported here is ATTENDANCE....and we fail miserably at that////

I wonder if there is a breakdown of the tickets given out for the 2003 series, ie. TV networks, players, MLB execs etc, to see how many of those 69.000 were the true fans and how many were obligatory type tix....

Do you live down here? If you did, you would know how crazy the area went for the team both times they made it to the playoffs. You can say alot about the people down here, but to say that they only sold out the playoffs because of "obligatory type tix" shows a lack of understanding of the ridiculous bandwagon mentality of the area.

What's your point, Mike? The guy sucks and continues to suck. Maybe if he didn't suck, people wouldn't talk about it so much.

But still, theres no reason to keep pointing it out in a new topic every night. It's fine to make a topic about it, but to have a brand new topic each day about it is pointless.

I'm a Jacobs supporter, go ahead and throw me off a building if you want, but to me Jacobs is what he is, and you're not gonna make him better by complaining about it.

And also, replying to BIG Z, I'm agreeing with that statement. If Jake happened to get hot with the bat, nobody would notice his defense.

Pardon me, I would "STILL" notice his defense. tyvm. lol

I disagree. Admin was quoted a week or so ago saying just the opposite. Pitching, speed, and defense. And he did say that if the defense didn't improve there would be changes made. I was all for trading Jake this off season but there was some question as to who to replace him with that was currently on the team. With the interleague play of Cantu at 1B I now think that answer is there. I'm not so sure they will pull the trigger during the season, but it wouldn't bother me a bit to see him gone, Cantu moved to 1B, and Dallas brought up. I still don't think that would be enough to make this team a legitimate play off contender, but it sure would look good trying to get these guys ready for next year.

Bob we heard that last year, and the year before that, and did any REAL changes happen ??? Forget what Beinfest says, look at his actions. McPherson hasn't seen this club yet, but he has some of the most impressive numbers in AAA. Its like they dance with all the pretty girls around him, but never ask him to dance. They are afraid he will be the difference maker, and make a winner out of this team. That is not on the fiscal agenda of this management at this time (and I am doubting at anytime in the future -- hopefully they sell the team when contruction begins) and certainly not this year, when they are trying their best to hoard as much money as possible for the stadium or a move if the stadium fails.

How many betters are willing to bet they won't make any bigtime trades to help this team ? What will you say then ?

I've been saying that all year. But for different reasons, as I have stated in numerous threads. I'm not in on the conspiracy theory. Management does want to win. They have shown that in the past, even if some opt to completely ignore that. But if you want to take it and twist it into a slam the ownership group, then feel free. Just stop trying to convince me. I can only laugh out loud so much, then it just becomes old.

I applaud the rest of your post. This one I cringe at, even tho I do agree in principle. I think Beinfest made it quite evident Jake is on the cusp of being traded because of his defense. But if he goes on a tear with his bat right now then can you imagine the turn around folks will have on this board? The I Love Jake posts will be all over the place and slamming management for trading him. See the "I hate Cantu" posts and threads that have turned into "I love Cantu" posts and threads as of late for proof. I have backed Cantu since ST and I think the best bet to trade Jake and move Cantu to 1B is our future. But the threads and posts that NOW want him in the ASG???

Pretty good post. We may not agree on much, but on this one we sure do. Discussions can be had without the name calling and foul language. However, if you check the bottom of the post it was edited for language. Maybe not when you first saw it, but by the time I got to it it was (darn I hate using those double "it"s in a sentence). You can't expect the moderators to spend every second of the day going through posts as they pop up.

Good point Rab. This area DID go crazy when the play offs hit and we were in them. And it lasted about a week after we won. This is a "place to be seen" type fan base. However, I would bet that most of those tickets sold in 2003 were sold to non residents. Not so much in 1997. But folks were lined up at the box office in '03 overnight only to be told the tickets were all sold out. Online. And that touches on a pet peeve for me. Yes, season ticket holders get first shot at the play off package, as it should be. But I would still like to see the other local fans to get a legitimate shot at tickets too. Whether they are the "place to be seen" type fans, or the ones that really can't afford a package plan of some kind and yet do manage to go to some of the games during the year. Put the tickets up for sale at the box office, but hold off selling them online for a few hours. For all teams. An MLB rule.

I don't know how this got off the topic of Mike Jacobs, but I thought it was interesting that McPhearson started at 1B yesterday. I don't think much will come of it because should he be brought up, he'll likely go to 3B and move Cantu across the diamond.

I disagree. Admin was quoted a week or so ago saying just the opposite. Pitching, speed, and defense. And he did say that if the defense didn't improve there would be changes made. They tried to win in 2002 to 2005, but since then the focus has been on lets make the team as profitable as we can. What moves were done in 2006 or 2007 to help the team make a push to the playoffs ?

There's this whole macro thing going on that the haters and the conspiracy theorists ignore which in a nutshell boils down to you make more money being successful than not.
