Report: Paul Lo Duca to sign minor league deal with Fish

Featured Replies

Catcher Paul Lo Duca is on the verge of signing a contract with the Marlins and is expected to report to Triple A Albuquerque, according to sources with knowledge of negotiations. Lo Duca, who was released last week by the Washington Nationals, spent half of the 2004 season and all of '05 with the Marlins.

The veteran catcher, who is 37, appeared in only 20 games behind the plate for the Nationals this season and hit just .230 overall.

Does he beat out Treanor for the backup spot? There's no way we drop Baker for him right? Carry 3 catchers?

I guess its worth a shot but at the moment I really don't think there's room for him. At best he's injury insurance right now.

September callup, and nothing more.

exactly and there hopig he gets his swingg back in the minors to be ready for setptember

Ever since he stopped juicing, he's sucked

They just want him so he can hook Treanor up with some HGH for his hip injuries.

OK that's a good pick up then

The Mitchell Report also says that Dodgers were concerned that Lo Duca had stopped taking steroids. The notes of the October 2003 meeting say:

? Steroids aren?t being used anymore on him. Big part of this. Might have some value to trade . . . Florida might have interest. . . . Got off the steroids . . . Took away a lot of hard line drives. . . . Can get comparable value back would consider trading. . . . If you do trade him, will get back on the stuff and try to show you he can have a good year. That?s his makeup. Comes to play. Last year of contract, playing for 05. [3]

Yup.

sweet, I agree wit Erick this is a great move as long as he stays in the minors; we do not need him on our squad.

Its really not a great move, its a covering our asses move. If we wind up in a position where we have to call him up, that will be a bad thing. The only reason someone would call it a "great" move is because his name is Paul Lo Duca, he's just injury insurance at this point for us.

That being said, Lo Duca > Rabelo, Hoover and probably any other options we have, so if Treanor's hip isn't right, he'll play a role. We will be absolutely terrible defensively at the catcher spot though.

If LoDuca's gets called up in September (which is all this move is for) he'll provide some extra versatility.

He does the little things like make contact. He'll do that off the bench; he'd be the 3rd string catcher, who could play some 1B & LF if need be, come September.

All in all, he's just an upgrade over Paul Hoover.

No big deal; but a minor upgrade if used, correctly.

In September, he'll just be one more option off the bench to (hopefully) provide quality at-bats pinch hitting.

Great. Hopefully he stays in AAA.

If he plays like crap he can stay down there. If he plays well i wouldnt mind giving him a shot.

It's Albuquerque.

Is it even possible to be a bad hitter there?

I'm sure he'll be fine, there; ready for a callup, come September, along with Andino and a couple of others.
