August 14, 200818 yr which players on the current marlins 40-man roster do u think wont be returning after this season??? I think the marlins will release hendrickson, mitre, rhodes, nelson, and i think ross or hammer to make room for youth.
August 14, 200818 yr Ive been waiting for a thread like this. i really wanna know who is going to come back next season and who isnt. so if anyone knows please share
August 14, 200818 yr I need Nny on the thread to see all the contracts, again. Really though, I can tell you that Hanley is a lock to stay, Hermida should stay...the starting 5 looks good (replace Olsen with Miller)...Uggla can stay or leave; quite frankly, I hope he goes. I think we can get some good value for Uggs, and I believe Coghlan is ready in the minors. Jacobs...gone. Cantu hopefully stays, and guys like McPherson and Gaby Sanchez can do battle in Spring Training, for the other corner infield spot. I believe Cody Ross is arbitration eligible this offseason (again, not sure)...they can keep him, but again...not a big loss if he goes; the youth movement begins, with Maybin, etc. The bullpen...I'm almost certain Gregg is also eligible for an increase in salary...he can go. Not that he's been terrible, by any means...just the nature of the business. Lindstrom or Tucker can rise as the closer...battle in Spring Training. Pinto stays...and hopefully, Kensing & Tankersley get better with another year under their belt...and then of course, minor signings / other minor league options. JMO...

So it should look like this: LF: Willingham CF: Maybin RF: Hermida 3B: Mcpherson/Sanchez SS:Hanley 2B: Uggla/Coghlan 1B: Cantu C: Baker/Treanor SP: Nolasco, JJ, Sanchez, Volstad, Miller What id like to see is Willingham go and Ross taking over in LF, Mcpherson staying at 3 and Sanchez becomes our new wes helms, and uggla to stay. i know Coghlan has potential, but i really like the power uggla gives us from that position and his D is very good.
August 14, 200818 yr why does it seem that everyone is ready to quickly discard Scotty O? he has been a solid starter for us all year, and shown great maturity as compared to other years i bet if he had received a little more run support and had a 10-7 record instead of 6-7 then u wouldnt be so quick to leave him out of next years plans while i eventually envision andrew miller being an ace, he hasnt shown anywhere near the consistency to automatically take olsen's spot next year miller is 23, olsen is 24 so i figure both to have a good future with this team
August 14, 200818 yr Keep Oli and Andrew get rid of scrubs like justin miller definatly hammer but not because of his perfoprmance beacuase of his injuries and age
August 14, 200818 yr The way I look at it. Olsen will most likely be traded because he will bring the biggest return. Mediocre pitchers will get $10 million a season. Imagine how valuable Olsen will be at $3 million and under a team's control for another year. Trade him and maybe you are able to get a player who can replace another arby eligible player like Willingham and you save even more money. It would be the smart thing to do, especially with Miller waiting for a rotation spot. I think you can trade Willingham, Olsen, and Jacobs, save around $12 million in salary and not miss much in terms of production. If Maybin and Miller are ready, you could even have a net gain in production.
August 14, 200818 yr Really depends on the payroll. a. If they are cool with upping payroll to the $40m-$50m range, we can keep a lot of our core players. b. If it's more in the $20m-$25m range, then a lot of key cuts need to be make, since just about the whole team is up for arbitration and big pay raises. I did a team payroll for $26.75m here: http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...t&p=1690734 * I suspect this may be the most likely scenario, but we'll see. For a $40m payroll, they can keep a huge core of the team- that's if they want to. SP Ricky Nolasco 3m SP Josh Johnson 2.5m SP Anibal Sanchez 400k SP Chris Volstad 400k SP Andrew Miller 1.35m C John Baker 400k 1B Jorge Cantu 4m 2B Dan Uggla 4.5m SS Hanley Ramirez 5.5m 3B Dallas McPherson 1m LF Josh Willingham 3.5m CF Cameron Maybin 400k RF Jeremy Hermida 3m RP Matt Lindstrom 400k RP Renyel Pinto 400k RP Joe Nelson 750k RP Logan Kensing 750k RP youth/FA 400k RP youth/FA 400k RP youth/FA 400k BN Robert Andino 400k BN Alfredo Amezaga 2m BN Wes Helms 3.75m BN rookie 400k BN rookie 400k OUT: Treanor, Jacobs, Ross, Olsen, Gonzo, Gregg, Waechter, J.Miller, Rhodes, Hendrickson
August 14, 200818 yr I'm not sure why transitioning a roster should be labeled losses. The Willinghams, Ross', Hendricksons, Helms etc., are if anything, going to be upgraded with players who are a better fit with the team's needs going forward. Ross may be an exception but we could swap out the entire 2008 outfield and depending on what Admin does (via trades) and who wins a job coming out of the minors, it won't be a negative. Maybin is playing very well now and there's no reason he'll tail off before the end their season and hopefully a successful Southern League playoff run will out even more in him. Willingham has already lost his job for 2009 and will come into camp next spring trying to win it back but I think the stigma of being chronically injured (which also applies to Hermida) will make the team reluctant to count on him again as a starting left fielder. Hermida continues to show flashes of exceptional play but cannot be depended on to either play an entire season without injury or offer the team what it rightfully should expect from a rightfielder which makes him a definite candidate to be upgraded. So, right now, I think you won't see a familiar face in the outfield come Opening Day (although Ross is a wildcard). Player movement happens on every team every year and there's so much talent coming through the system it's really a matter of how many you can assimilate without starting a rookie learning curve again but unless the starting rotation is in shambles at the end of spring training we'll be looking at "gains" instead of "losses" next April.
August 14, 200818 yr depending on how olsen finishes the season, i wouldnt see a problem paying $3m for a 4th year starting pitching, especially to one that has never before had to skip a start this guy obviously has some passion and a bit of character and personally, i like him
August 14, 200818 yr i suppose everything discussed in this thread depends on the outcome of the lawsuit if we win and ground is broken for the new stadium before the end of the year then i would imagine loria would be slightly more willing to spend some bucks i would actually quite like to keep gregg as our closer, how much tho would he be in line to get?

August 14, 200818 yr i would really like to keep ross and jacobs but willingham can go.....either way we all have different opinions at what we want to see but you never know so no point in arguing about it
August 14, 200818 yr Not to turn this into a Willingham thread, but he's just slumping and/or playing through injury right now. Let's not forget what he's done in the past and how he's one of the few players on our team that takes walks and gets on base at an above average rate (prior to this year I mean). Let's not throw in the towel on what has been a very good hitter. He's not right right now, and I suspect it may be an injury, but who knows.
August 14, 200818 yr I know money is an issue with this club so it's got us all thinking like Beinfest. If we're thinking about being competitive however its a different story. A. Miller has not thus far shown that he can go deep into games or be consistent near the srike zone. Assuming Hendricksons gone that would leave us without a reliable lefty starter if Olsen goes. In our division that would be suicidal. Even if Miller develops as projected, a reliable durable lefty starter for $3 million is a bargain unless the Marlins have no intention of ever raising payroll. As for Willingham I thought they missed their window for trading him earlier this year. Now he is struggling and he's damaged goods. Jake on the other hand has some value for teams looking for a lefty power bat. As for Maybin, I'm sure the team is going to try to rush him into the starting CF spot but I think that is a mistake. He's only 21. He's having an ok season at AA but he will struggle in the bigs at first. Maybe we don't have another option but why start the clock on his service time if he isn't ready. Personally, I think Uggla is going to be trade bait. He's looking o make $4.5 million. You have an abundance of power hitters and a need for table setters and contact hitters. You have Coughlin in the wings, Amezaga and Andino can fill the gap until then. He may be the most expendable for a catcher or veteran outfielder.

August 14, 200818 yr McPherson, if you've noticed is playing hurt and has since just before the PCL ASG and hasn't hit a homer in what seems like two weeks and is generally underachieving offensively. He continues to play through whatever it is but his production numbers didn't evaporate by accident nor were they a mirage in the first place. The 'Topes announcers allude to it once in a while but never get specific. I think it is one of the reasons you didn't see some other moves possibly made at the trade deadline. The fact that he's injured is not good, the fact he is able to defend his position while injured should be taken as a positive.

August 14, 200818 yr I need Nny on the thread to see all the contracts, again. http://www.marlinbaseball.com/forums/index...0&p=1676428 In that case, I think Gregg, Treanor, maybe Cantu, Olsen, Willingham, and Ross will all be gone. Uggla might also be traded.
August 14, 200818 yr They can get to $40 million, but it's going to cost them Olsen, Jacobs, Willingham, Gregg, Treanor, J. Miller, and Waecther out of the arbitration bunch, plus not resigning any current FA, which really isn't a big deal. They can sneak in Amezaga and Cody under the gun if they do something like this: C - Baker $400k 1B - Cantu $3mil 2B - Uggla $4.5mil SS - Hanley $5.5 mil 3B - McPherson $750k LF - Cody - $2mil CF - Maybin - $400k RF - Hermida - $3mil B - Amezaga - $1.75, G. Sanchez - 400k, "FA 1B/3B" $1mil, "Vet. 4th OF" $1 mil, Rabelo/Young Catcher - $400k SP - Nolasco $2.5, Johnson $2, Miller $1.5, Anibal 450k, Volstad 400k RP - Nelson $750k, Kensing $750k, Lindstrom 450k, Pinto 450k, Tank 450k, and Cruz/C.Martinez/Whoever 400k That's $37 and change above. Throw in Helms buyout, and let's say I am underestimating inflation a bit and Uggla gets to $5 (Utley was $4.5 in year 4), or Nolasco $3, or Amezaga $2, or Hermida/Cody a bit more, or one of the FA being $1.5, and you get to that $40 number very fast. If they want $35, I see Cantu and Cody being the remaining cuts, the team going Gaby/Dallas at the corners, bringing in a second veteran FA 1B/3B to have a huge 1B/3B platoon between the kids and vets, and another cheap outfielder (or Raynor) to deal with LF. This scenario is an all IN HOUSE option for $35-40 million, and that's a really good ballclub if the pitchers keep up the progression and Hermida stops being an asshole. Also can't forget that moving Olsen, Jacobs, Gregg, and Willingham will each net a nice piece and could change the situation monetarily by bringing in a cheaper option for somewhere. I'm looking at another catcher, another outfielder, and relief pitching based on the team above. We're in good shape even if we have a lot of defections. Not very concerned with the longterm outlook.
August 14, 200818 yr Author personally i think the face of this lineup is gonna be completely changed stats-wise.like now they are a power hitting team but in the next year or two they'll be all about contact and speed. with guys like john raynor, cameron maybin, chris coghlan, gaby sanchez, hanley, hermida. keeping maybe cantu at third and john baker as power hitters
