Fire Sale

this better not be true. loria needs to start dishing out the money. jacobs and willingham i am fine in going because they are both replacable. but uggla and ross better stay because they've been so valuable this season for the team's success. gregg and olsen i'm not sure about. yes gregg gives everyone a heart attack when he's on the mound but he gets the job done and isn't pay that much. olsen has had some good outings but it doesn't seem like he's playing to his potential like our other pitchers: jj, volstad, and nolasco. how does loria expect the team to compete again next season if he dismantles the team again.

First off, Barry Jackson is a joke.

Second off, I would like to state that the 2005-2006 off season was NOT a fire sale.

Right, because losing a bunch of players that were all-stars and or were part of a world series championship team is normal.

all those moves posted on mlbtraderumors are pretty obvious. and im sick of the word 'fire sale' like every one else is, im sure

This is excellent news, IMO. All those guys are not only easily replaceable in our system, but they also are probably at peak value right now, meaning the return will never be better.

I hope we do move all those guys mentioned, except Hermida. Should be a fun off season.

Yawn. Not a big deal.

Staff - Johnson, Anibal, Nolasco, Miller, Volstad

Pen - Lindstrom, Pinto, Nelson, and a collection of Kensing, Tank, Owens, Waecther, Cruz, Tucker, Vanden Hurk, Martinez, Garcia, whoever Beinfest plucks from obscurity next year. If there is a staff injury, they could use Tucker, Hurk, or even Thompson, Sinkbiel, or Trahern if they turn it on next year. Plenty of arms.

As for the field, the Marlins could start 6 'rookies' (McPherson 3B, Baker C, G. Sanchez 1B, Maybin CF, Raynor LF, Coghlan 2B) in addition to Hanley and Hermida next year, and probably not lose much offense, as long as there is a strong veteran bench behind them for growing pains. You can replace older, not defensively inclined, .800 OPS corner players. You don't need to pay for them (with our salary limitations) unless they are a bit younger and have shown flashes of brilliance, i.e. Hermida's minor league career and 2007 season. And losing all of them would be very drastic and very unlikely because they have enough money to resign at least two of Uggla, Cantu, Jacobs, Willingham, and Cody as long as they get Gregg, Olsen, and Treanor off the books. Personally, I find it very hard to believe they move Uggla unless they can get something crazy like Colby Rasmus and Bryan Anderson. I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility, but just very very doubtful.

This is not a big deal. Everyone cried when Cabrera and Willis left, and the team got better. It's going to continue to happen. Also note, all of the above are in house options besides "veteran bench bat." It's not like Beinfest gets routinely ripped off in trades where he won't find decent pieces to get back in return for Gregg, Olsen, Jacobs, etc. He'll get something to add to what we have.

We are in great shape whatever direction Beinfest chooses this offseason. He's done a great job the last two years. There is no crying in baseball.

Umm I wouldn't be sad at all to see any of those guys go... maybe with the exception of Uggla and Cody...and it wouldn't take me long to get over it either.

i see three position players the marlins should build there team around hanley, cody ross, jorge cantu. hanley is a given, and the thing i like about cody ross that u dont see from most of the other players is that he can adjust to pitches and hit them the other way along with hitting the ball well in clutch situations. cantu puts up a good average and hits for power.

A fire sale is when players are given away for discount prices. What we did was traded our players for great prospects, which is why we are where we are now.

Don't blame me because you don't know the meaning of "fire sale".

This.

I'm absolutely fine with this.

I've said it ALL YEAR.

Everybody and their mother referred to it as a fire sale other than Samson who called it a "Market Correction." The payroll went from about 65 million to 15 million, that's a fire sale.

Fire sale is NOT a sports term, it is an economic term. Don't blame me for constant misuse of the word because of the shellshock from 1997-1998.

Except when it's the Dolphins...then it's "rebuilding."

Ever care to think of the fact that the Marlins were trying to rebuild b/c paying players like Carlos Delgado didn't work for them?

They got rid of expensive all-stars and established players for cheap minor leaguers that thankfully ended up being pretty good. If that's not a fire sale then you're right, I don't know what the f*** it is.

Just like the Dolphins?

They got rid of Jason Taylor for a 2nd rounder.

Let go of Zach Thomas. Feely (who did well last year) is gone, and replaced by a rookie kicker.

Funny how the term "fire-sale" doesn't come up with the beloved Dolphins.

Gotta weigh it out and I think you are right, they may bring in more than they will be worth down the line.

See, now you're just talking out of your ass. The Dolphins got rid of Taylor and Thomas because they are old and need to rebuild. The Marlins got rid of guys that helped them win a World Series because they wanted to be cheap. Anyway, why are you again dissing the Dolphins if you don't care about them? What ever happened to your "i'm a mature little wiener and nobody else is" routine? I guess you decided to drop the mature part and just be a little wiener. :whistle

I like how whenever the marlins make a trade, it's a "firesale" and not "making the organization better."

if we're any other team, this is a non-issue. But OH sh*t THE MARLINS ARE MAKING ANOTHER TRADE, THOSE SLY BASTARDS ARE HAVING ANOTHER FIRESALE!!! f***ing idiotic talking heads

They didn't trade them for "cheap minor leaguers that thankfully ended up pretty good", they traded them for what we call "prospects", using some "foresight". And atleast we can agree, you don't know what it is.

Err... a fire sale isnt necessarily at a discount, but usually when you sweep your roster of all the players you arent going to rebuild your future around. Its a money thing usually. Our big contracts for your small ones, but of equal talent come future. Fire sales are usually for rebuilding, so you dont usually get position players but rather young guys in the mix, and for other sports, draft picks. You can call 07-08 a failed "fire sale" for the Toronto Maple Leafs because all of their guys had no movement clauses :p But what you are refering to Rab is a literal fire sale... the selling of goods for cheap prices (deriving from items burned in a fire, then sold all together because they are damaged so they sold cheaper) but generally in sports its just a group of more expensive contracts for cheaper ones. Furthermore, my example, the Maple Leafs, had millions tied up in 3 guys, Mats Sundin(free agent, old, 7mil), Bryan McCabe(not meeting expectations, old, 6mil), and Tomas Kabarle(team is getting ready for rebuild, 6 mil) and also with minor players who have large contracts. Basically, its replacing expensive stars for cheap good youth, but no, its nothing to do with actually discounting value.

Any way you look at it they made those trades to dump payroll, not to get better. No matter how good a prospect is there's no guarantee that he'll be a good major league player.
