Mark Kotsay anyone?

Hmmm... We're in an ideal position from a waiver wire standpoint. The Fish could block a better team in the standings. After watching Gonzo in left yesterday (and 100% that's not a knock on a guy who contributed a lot earlier in the year when it was really needed) and Willingham's falling off, or for that matter Hermida, Kotsay has a limited no-trade but at least would be in the play-off hunt here, and can play all three outfield positions PLUS he's free agent at the end of the season.

Pro outfielder. Good get in my opinion. His recents are good as far back post ASG. And five runs don't score in an inning with him in leftfield.

The choices get slimmer as we approach the end of the month. I bet LB and company are kicking the tires on a trade with Frank Wren.

do u really think that managment still thinks we are in it and will still make a trade ?

:lol

I would rather have Ross with 2 broken legs! CF is def not the problem right now... There is NO CHANCE we get a CF... get over it already.. Maybin in 09

We are only 4 games back with 37 games left, with 12 of those games against the Mets or Phillies.

yea no trade will happen but i wish it would.

Why on Earth did they waive him? The guy just hit for the cycle two days ago and had a seven game hit streak going and is Jones-esque in the outfield. The next guy in line they have for next year is Jordan Schaffer who, if called up next year, would be rushed or Josh Anderson which is a huge downgrade.

I just don't get this.

Ross can move to left, leave Kotsay in CF.. Maybin I'll be lucky to be up here by the beginning of next year as much as he's K'ed this year in AA. Plus we're trying to win this year, next year is not our issue right now.

Can we stop with the "old used up left hander, anyone interested?" threads?

Dolphins Stadium is a crap park for left-handers, therefore we do not need to add more older-veteran LH hitters to our lineup.

This Ross is God thing never ceases to amaze me.

I thought I made it clear production and defense in leftfield was at the core of my concerns after watching yesterday unravel. And I did mention he's a free agent right? How Maybin in '09 plays into this is beyond me.

He'd be a rental, I thought that was obvious. And a long shot to boot.

I'm with you brother on the Ross thing.

I don't think it's a bad idea. Maybin for sure is getting called up in September but who knows how he is gonna do and you're right, left field production is an issue. As I recall Kotsay doesn't strike out much, makes contact, ... worth considering as a rental.

if we were interested, I'd think we'd have just put a claim on him instead.

But you know how this organization works.

If we had put a claim on him, the Braves could have dumped his entire remaining contract on us.

No doubt, IF we're trying to work out a deal, we're trying to work one out where we don't have to pay much.

We're just playing what-if here but he does have that limited no-trade and when signed his contract it was with a west coast team, he being a west coast guy. Florida was probably the last he wanted to be traded to. In a previous contract he has a million dollar kicker if traded - plus Wren probably would want someone back.

Could be multiple needs at work. Could also be there is no interest on the Marlins' part. Could be a lot of things. All we can do is tune in tomorrow...

While he is from CA, Mark really enjoyed playing here 10 yrs ago, and personally he's one of my favorite all-time Fish. He always did a good job in the outfield, and his hitting finally caught up w/ his potential. I'm always for alumni returnng as long as they fill a need on the team. Do we need another lefty? Do we need another outfielder who's had back injuries? Not so sure..

Cox, teammates want Kotsay to stay with Braves

By CARROLL ROGERS

The Atlanta Journal-Consitution

Monday, August 18, 2008

Mark Kotsay has made enough of an impression this season that his manager and Braves teammates have been saying lately they'd love to have him back next year.

Kotsay is a free agent after the season.

It was understood before the season started that he would be a one-year bridge to Jordan Schafer in center field for the Braves. But that was before Schafer was suspended 50 games for the use of HGH and lost momentum in his minor-league progress.

That would leave the door open at least to the possibility of a Kotsay return.

His manager wouldn't mind seeing it, though he didn't want to speculate on its likelihood just yet.

"He's a great leader, that kid," manager Bobby Cox said. "He's a gamer, professional, does everything fundamentally sound, and he's hitting .300."

Heading into Monday's game, Kotsay was hitting .302 in 82 games.

"It's an option definitely," Kotsay said. "I love it here. I love playing for Bobby. It's a matter of what direction they're going to go."

One possibility circulating Braves players and fans has been to have Kotsay back in a part-time capacity, maybe as a fourth outfielder and backup first baseman. Kotsay, 32, said Monday though, at this point in his career, he still wants to play every day.

"I don't see coming back here as an option if I'm not an everyday guy," Kotsay said. "My family situation and time spent away from me is very important. To be away from them and not to be playing every day ? to be a four-hour flight away ? would be a real challenge from a mental aspect.

"I'm not going to say that I would close my options off. If it was my only option, I'd have to think really hard about it."

Kotsay makes his permanent home in San Diego.

The big question coming into the season was how Kotsay's back would hold up, given his problems of the last several years. He missed 33 games on the disabled list with a lower back strain, but since his return July 1, he was hitting .313 (41-for-131) heading into Monday.

He went 5-for-5 on Thursday night and became the fifth player in Braves franchise history since 1900 to hit for the cycle.

"I'm just keeping an open mind," Kotsay said. "I've never been a free agent. I've never experienced what it feels like to go into an offseason like this. I really have no feelings in any direction other than to finish the season healthy and see where that takes me."

anyone is better in left than hammer and gonzo so i would certainly take kotsay and his .302 average. hell by the end of the season he'll finish with more home runs than hammer.
