Ramirez continues to duck tough questions

I thought this was worth posting, it's so seldom we get anything resembling inside the lockeroom stuff...

Ramirez continues to duck tough questions

by Tom D'Angelo | Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 07:19 AM

You will not see a quote from Hanley Ramirez about his play in the ninth inning Tuesday that cost the Marlins a victory in Atlanta. Ramirez, who botched what should have been an easy game-ending double play by mishandling the ball as he was trying to make the relay throw, once again ducked the media when things do not go right for the prickly shortstop.

Ramirez was asked twice what happened on the play and he not only ignored the questions, he quickly walked away, attempting to hide in the shower area. He then was told that the closer (Kevin Gregg) talked.

Again, silence.

This is not unusual for Ramirez, the most difficult person to approach in the Marlins clubhouse. He became the face of the team when he signed a $70 million contract. With that comes an obligation to at least be a representative to you, the fans. While Ramirez showed his true colors, Gregg stood up like a man and answered every last question about his nightmarish ninth inning, one in which he allowed four runs in the 10-9 loss.

Gregg even waited at his locker, long after the game ended, knowing he had an obligation to talk. And he is not the only Marlins player to face the music during difficult times. Dan Uggla, Mike Jacobs, Josh Willingham and Scott Olsen each have answered every question about their second half slumps.

Ramirez does not have to make himself a candidate for the Good Guy Award. Baseball has its share of surly souls (Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent, Albert Pujols, etc.) who have done just fine on the field and become perennial All-Stars. But there also are players like Chipper Jones, Derrek Lee and Luis Gonzalez who get it, who prove you can be an All-Star and a stand up guy and treat people with respect.

Ramirez has obviously chosen his course.

If this were a one time thing, I could understand that maybe he would be embarrassed by his play. However, since the article makes it sound like a common occurrence, this is quite disconcerting. As it says, having signed that contract made him the face of the team, and he needs to step up and be just that- the face people see speaking when something goes wrong (or right, even) with the club.

Meh, it was mainly Gregg's fault anyway. Besides, what good is gonna come out of a player standing there and saying "I f***ed up"? It's not gonna change the outcome of the game.

I'm waiting for Hanley to go back to his old glove. :mis2

the teal strip has been bad luck

This article is all fine and dandy, but I couldnt care less. I'd rather he just have made a simple freakin play.

He did the same thing in Colorado and I think that was with the old glove. I'm interested to see what the Dominicans do in the baseball classic with him. I assume Reyes will be in SS. Where will they put Hanley? CF, I hope, and hopefully he plays it well giving the Marlins some ideas. He may be the best athlete in the agme but all his athletism is wasted at SS because he can't play it well.

His old glove wasn't much better, though.

You would think that but a number of times now he's had trouble getting the ball out of his new glove and this was about as easy a double play as you could ask for. He had already crossed the bag and was on the first base side of the base, but he just couldn't get a grip.

It will be interesting as a minor little side note to see if he stays with it or goes back to what he was using before.

The same thing was happening with his old glove. Tommy has been talking about how he always hears scouts say that his glove is too big on him for a while now.

I agree, this thing looks gargantuan, almost clownish. Maybe I never really paid attention to the size of his previous glove because it was, well, just another glove.

Whatever the problem, anyone taking bets there's a new infield coach next year?

It would be nice if they can get Perry Hill to come out of retirement.

Yeah I mean the article is more of a newspaper writer fraternity thing where they take issue with anyone who won't patiently and politely sit there and answer all their questions. Would I rather Hanley do it? Of course. But he is still a young guy and obviously there's a lot of emotions after a game like that.

I'll give him time to mature, but at the same time when you sign a contract like that, there are some expectations that are going to come with it.

As an aside here, is there a perception that some of the Latin players don't like to do the post-game interviews? Whether it's a language barrier or just different attitudes or whatever?

honestely, i dont even care. to the fans, he doesnt need to talk to perform. he can stay quiet as long as he want, as long as he hits the ball and fields the ball.

i agree. this is too dissappointing to live with

Hanley is the worst shortstop in MLB. He needs to be moved to Center Field.

Great idea.

While we're at it, let's move Maybin to SS. :thumbup

Maybin is a good defensive outfielder.. there's no need to move him. :thumbup

Hanley in RF or Left, Maybin in CF, Hermida in RF or left. Sounds good to me. I'd avoid CF for Hanley, unless its for a year.

SS- Coughan if he can, or Andino until one matures.

In refernece to Hanley eating sh*t and dodging questions- Sammy Sosa on Congressional Hill.

Nuff Said.

wa wa wa I am a reporter that needs to write a story and couldnt get an interview

jesus christ these modern reporters sicken me

More reason why Newspapers are dying

I thought you meant that it would be a bad idea to move Hanley and that it would be akin to moving Maybin to the IF. Isn't that what you meant? :confused
