The ridiculously low attendance for this game grabbed the headlines and brought the attendance problem to the for front again.

We all know the usual reasons (some call them excuses) for the low turnout to the Marlins games.

The two fire sales, the trading away stars for prospects, the location and type of stadium where the Marlins play, the heat in day games, the rain or its potential in night games....etc. Until all these factors are addressed and corrected with the new stadium the attendance will remain low.

How much will the attendance increase? A stable team with a decent payroll that keeps its stars and has a chance to be a contender year after year will help. Watching games comfortably in a baseball stadium will help.

I have high hopes for this franchise in the future.

Let me just say this....

if this game were being played at the OB site I might have had a chance to make it...

I work/live in downtown and could have taken a halfday to catch the 3 hour game (or maybe get there a little late and take 2 hours). A lot of fans live in south dade and for me to drive to DS in the middle of the work week to just get stuck in 4:30pm traffic heading south on 95 is not worth it and I consider myself a fan of the team.

I use to live on long island, do you know what it is like going to yankees stadium day or night for a game, try it in rush hour, i still went, you just leave earlier.

I never understand why people go to a sporting event when they leave early to beat the traffic, regardless of the score. I guess it makes sense if the game is a blowout, but in a close contest the most exciting part of the match is the conclusion. At footall matches over here, as soon as the clock goes to 80 minutes, then a third of the crowd, automatically gets up and leaves even if it is a draw or 1 goal between the teams.

i guess i didn't make it clear, I meant you leave home earlier, i could careless what time the game finish, i stay till the players is off the field.

Ok yeh thats fine.

If Im going to a football match here, I like to get there as early as possible cos I like to have a pint or two before the match and then get to my seat well in advance of the kickoff to soak up the building atmosphere and see the players practice.

Im not trying to draw comparisons because baseball and football are totally different eg baseball is every night whereas football is once or twice a week, commonly at 3pm on a Saturday.

Out of the two baseball games that I have been to, one at Yankee Stadium, which was a school trip, we left later than we should have so we got stuck in the traffic and hence missed the first few pitches of Roger Clemens return. The other game I went to was at Angel Stadium, with my dad and one of his friends, and we were there Id guess about an hour and a half before the first pitch so we got to see BP etc.

The sad thing is, I heard about the low attendance while listening to a local radio show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Florida Marlins fans living in South Florida are a joke all over the country. I think the team should follow the footsteps of the Seattle Supersonics and move to Oklahoma City... that or San Antonio. Heck, they'd get a larger attendance if they just moved up here to Grand Rapids.

If they build the new stadium for the team in Florida, they are going to lose so much money. It is just a horrible business move. The team has been around since 1993 and they have won two World Series yet they can't get fans in the seats. It doesn't take a BBA to see that there is no gain by staying in South Florida.

What you guys are failing to realize is that this is NOT a Marlins problem, it's a scheduling problem. No team is going to get a large attendance in 90 degree weather in the middle of the week.

Here is proof: The Rangers get 25,000 people a game on average and they were JUST AS EMPTY yesterday. But, since they aren't us, they are getting almost no play on this.

Here is an article about their tiny attendance yesterday from a local Texas paper: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...ol.3356653.html

Here is a quick excerpt:

How much lighter was the attendance than the announced 12,882 Wednesday? When a fan got up to go to the bathroom, he turned and asked a neighbor, "Save my section, will you?"

Come on guys, you're all smarter than this. We have bad attendance, but it's not like we are usually getting 600 fans.

I'm trying to find sources for this one, but I'm having trouble because noone is picking this up.

THE SCENE: It was cloudy with a strong wind blowing out at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, with a temperature of 74 and an attendance not much higher. Because season tickets count for every game, the announced crowd was 12,882, but there were perhaps 500 people in the stands for first pitch.

There's no reason to schedule a midweek game at 1pm. Sorry none.

Why is someone going to take off from their jobs or from class to watch a game against the Braves? Like seriously I'm not missing class for that one game when we have 80 home games. And it's not like it's opening day. It's a random mid week game against a team thats struggling.

We were put in a position to fail.

Exactly. Us and the Texas Rangers. We both failed at the same rate. The only difference is that we are the Florida Marlins and they are the Texas Rangers.

First of all, if you take Hermida out, who is batting .177, then the average would be higer.

Second of all, do you think it could have hurt us? You dont think we could have been a better team if we had aquired him?

Third of all, the Dodgers are 15-16 since they traded for Manny. Im pretty sure they would be somewhere around 12-19 or maybe even 11-20 if they didn't pick him up.

Why?

Like you said, the Dodgers are 15-16 since the trade. Before the trade, they were 69-70. Their win-loss is actually worse! Games under .500 is the same. You can't say for sure, or for any reason, that the Dodgers would actually be worse without him because they have been winning games at the same pace with him as they did without him.

And the fact they average 8,000 more fans and this doesnt seem to happen every year...

Here are the problems with comparing to other teams and other markets...

1) We have the worst attendence in baseball and do most years.

2) We have been through firesales and trading key players that gets national notice

3) We have been in a major battle for a new stadium with no real resolution in sight

4) We have a lease up soon and could be out of a home

All of these reasons and maybe even a few more makes the national media pick it up. I was watching the Nats-Phillies game last night and the announcers were joking about our attendence every few innings. I'm like it's the freakin Nationals announcing team and they're making fun of us!!!!! :banghead

This happens when they have games during the day in the middle of the week. It's terrible scheduling.

But they fact that they get 8,000 more fans a game is the point that I'm trying to make. Even a team that gets 25,000 a game can't bring in more than 500 in this setting, why should we be expected to?

I think it should be obvious that a team, any team, wouid win more games with Manny playign rather than Juan Pierre but I guess not everyone agrees.

They should but they haven't, for some reason.

He's playing well, but it hasn't helped LA much.

Because this is a MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM. Its a freaking joke that there were only 600 people there. Texas is terrible as well, but this doesnt seem to happen all the time with them. I remember in 2002 when Luis Casitllo was on his hitting streat, the friday night game against the tigers that I was at had a paid attendance of 4,300.

Listen I'm not bashing anyone here. People who go to the games and are actually paying attention to whats going on are good fans. However, a fan base is judged by all of its fans, not just the hard core fans. Since this is the case, we currently have the worst fan base in all of sports. Hopefully a new stadium changes this.

So you're going 6 years to a game against the Pirates to show how this happens all the time? Not to mention 2002 had the lowest attendance in franchise history.

No team can expect people to come out in this weather on a weekday, whether it is a team that usually brings in 16K or a team that usually brings in 26K. The Texas game proved that.

Also, I don't consider people who don't know the names of the players part of the "fans".

This has been dragged around over and over. People do not realize that this was a day game on a Wednesday afternoon. Fan attendance is bad enough. What do you really expect on a weekday afternoon, esp. when school is in session?

it is embarassing but to be fair why a game was scheduled on a weekday in the afternoon not on a holiday it makes no sense to me

Exactly.

skewered out here in phoenix on talk radio as well as the game recap in the paper ...... then they all get to talking about how everytime they go down there it's like a HS game where you can hear the conversations in the bleachers, etc

not like anyone in phoenix should talk about anyone elses attendance..........

I remember a day, not to long ago, one of the happiest days of my life. It was the day I recieved two batter's box seats from a friend who couldnt use them. I was jumping up and down with excitement. I had always wondered what it was like to watch a ballgame from right behind homeplate. I got to the seats on that sunday day game and only lasted up to the sixth inning. To this day I have never again(or before for that matter) been that uncomfortably hot, actually, unbearably hot... never again.

it is embarassing but to be fair why a game was scheduled on a weekday in the afternoon not on a holiday it makes no sense to me

Exactly.

It probably had to do with the Miami Dolphins wanting their field to get extra maintenance for Opening Kickoff.

The apologists are hilarious.

But of course, that's a sports fan for you. It's perfectly fine when it's your team, but when it's someone else's, it's ridiculous.

Keep living in denial though. Provides a good laugh for the rational people.

I hope you weren't talking about me, because my point was why is it perfectly fine when it is someone else's team but not ours?
