Payroll or Chemistry

What has talent ever won anyone besides heart break?

Well, let's not take it too far...you have to have at least some talent. A good ratio (again...I am using actual math to PROVE my theories  ) is 20% talent + 40%heart + 20% getting along with others; being a good clubhouse presence + 20% hustle + 20% intangibles = the perfect player.

If you don't have all of those, you'll never be an actual winner.

I like using the OPZ stat for determining ability. It measure not only OPS scores, adjusts for parks, etc, it also adjusts for heart size. i.e., Nick Punto has a huge OPZ because of a freak heart size. He grew up at the northernmost point of the Andes mountain and his heart grew 4 times the size of normal humans because it needed to work harder to suck all the oxygen out of the thin mountain air. This made Nick Punto a ball player. Also OPZ takes into account College Football Championships and punts inside the 5 yard line. Obviously Erstad gets a boost from these activities.

Great stat.

But does OPZ convert from AL to NL and so forth and so on?

It's absolutely weighted for latitude, longitude, altitude, and barometric pressure.

That didn't answer the question. Stop dodging me, bro.

the phils have better chemistry because matt stairs let's them all pound his ass. I don't hear of any rays doing this.

Team "chemistry" is the most overrated aspect of baseball, period.

Well, since you deny my math I'll give you picture evidence. Who is winning the World Series? The Phillies, who obviously have better chemistry. Here are some pictures:

Now look at how only 1 guy is smiling, nobody seems happy, they are down in the dumps, they look insincere, they simply don't like each other and it is showing on the field. Now look at the Phillies -

Happy, exuberant, joyful... they literally love each other and would go to war with the guy next to him. They have fun; they are the definition of chemistry and again..it shows on the field.

Now I have math and pictures to prove my said and you only have opinion. I win.

This is one of the most fantastic posts ever.

You win the di-di-di award for spending some good minutes in your life searching for pics, and typing seriously to a man who was clearly being sarcastic.

He was being sarcastic!?

I think that you have to avoid having too many big egos on the field. It generally fails in sports (see: The Yankees 2002-2008, the Lakers with Kobe, Shaq, Karl Malone, and Gary Payton).

Id take chemistry over payroll, i mean look at the marlins a 22 Million Dollar Payroll which is less than a few players like A Rod but we still manage to get over 500 and this team which has been together for a few seasons now and even with departing players we are being favored to make a serious run to the playoffs.

But payroll is also very important because you won't be able to keep or sign any of your superstar players without it.

But if there was a poll i'd bet payroll would win

Chemistry is still over rated no matter how you put it. The Marlins didnt do good this year because of chemistry, they did it because they had good cheap players.

That has nothing to do with chemistry. That is a branch of science that deals with the identification of substances of which matter is composed. The Rays are not awesome because of that.

The Rays are awesome because they built their farm system with insane prospects like Kaz, Longoria, Shields, BJ, Price, etc, and made a few nice trades/acquisitions with Garza, Pena, Jackson, Bartlett, Iwamura, Bradford, etc. Not because they like each other.

The Marlins are going to be awesome because they built their farm system with a flurry of SP prospects, an absolutely loaded positional farm system from the last 3 drafts, and have made a few excellent other acquisitions (Hanley, Maybin, Miller, Baker, and Lindstrom -trade, Uggla-Rule V, Cantu, Ross, McPherson, and Nelson-cheap FA acquisitions).

Payroll is irrelevant. It's about building your team anyway you can, and we're doing it through the minors. And being serious about "chemistry," WINNING creates chemistry and you WIN by building an awesome team regardless if the player is cost-controlled or if they cost $10 million a season.

Also, Jim Leyland hates you.

Bingo. And I agree with the rest of the post as well. But if you took a guy that is a club house cancer and throw him into the mix.........Go into a little losing spell, mix in a club house cancer, and the outcome can be very bad. And I don't mean just in the club house either. Take a team star and if he consistently dosen't give 100% on the field or in practice he can be very detrimental to a team with so many young players. Youth is impressionable. Impressionablity is just one of the reasons why you must have at least a couple of well adjusted veterans on the squad. And if you can have a couple veterans that display that "leadership" in different ways, such as Helms (get in your face) and Gonzo (do as I do), then so much the better.

Talent over chemistry definitely, but not payroll over chemistry. Look at the yankees and mets.

The Yanks and Mets didn't make the playoffs because other teams were better, not because they didn't have enough chemistry.

Someone needs to make an all-chemistry team...

i still don't see the point of the two pictures, 1 was obviously reg season and the other they either clinched playoff spot or playoff game.....that doesn't prove anything. I have been watching rays games this season when i could and the team has great chemistry

We're no strangers to chemistry. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitments what I'm thinking of, you wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling, gotta make you understand.

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry (that's huge in chemistry), never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you (also a big factor in chemistry).

I'll say it again to emphasize my point:

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

We've know each other for so long your hearts been aching, but you're too shy to say it (probably from the lack of chemistry).

Inside we both know whats been going on we know the game and were gonna play it (obviously with a new sense of chemistry).

And if you ask me how I'm feeling, don't tell me you're too blind to see.

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

And again for good measure:

Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

I can't believe the amount of people who took that post with the pics of the Rays and Phillies (and everything else that was said) seriously.

Some of the reactions to This Thread is how I realized that some people don't get sarcasm at all.
