Marlins place Rabelo on waivers

Injuries plagued catcher throughout 2008 season

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

MIAMI -- Looking to free up 40-man roster space, the Marlins on Tuesday placed catcher Mike Rabelo on outright waivers, according to multiple MLB sources.

The move doesn't necessarily mean the 28-year-old catcher will be leaving the Marlins organization. If he isn't claimed during the 72-hour waiver window, Rabelo could be outrighted to Florida's new Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans.

To clear waivers, Rabelo first would have to pass through National League waivers, and then the American League.

Clubs right now are putting together their 40-man rosters, and this move with Rabelo frees up a spot.

Last December, the Marlins acquired Rabelo and five other players from the Tigers in the blockbuster trade that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit.

If another club claims Rabelo off waivers, he would have to be placed on its 40-man roster.

Rabelo labored through an injury-plagued 2008 season. A switch-hitter, he was bothered by a left knee and hip problem stemming from a collision at home plate with Austin Kearns of the Nationals in Spring Training. After opening the season on the disabled list, Rabelo was activated on April 10.

Early in the season, the Marlins split the catching duties between Rabelo and Matt Treanor. Rabelo appeared in 34 games and batted .202 with three home runs and 10 RBIs.

The Marlins optioned Rabelo to Triple-A Albuquerque on June 24. However, he was injured for much of the second half and appeared in just 17 Minor League games, including eight at Class A Jupiter.

Rabelo was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Sept. 1, and he was activated off the 60-day DL on Nov. 12.

His defense was absolutely unacceptable. We have a lefty catcher- Rabelo doesn't really fit at this point. I think the idea is they think he'll pass through if they're willing to put him out there- if not they'd try to trade, no? Unless they already tried and got no takers.

I'd much have the extra spot on the 40 man...I think he'll make it through waivers no problem....even if he is claimed, not a big loss.

Defense wasn't great and injuries were constantly plaguing him, but who else is going to spike the baseball?

I don't know if we could pay another team to keep him on their roster but we will see.

I guess this means Paul Hoover beat out Rabelo for the third string catcher job. Exciting stuff.

Really? For who.

That's 38 without Rabelo, and there are a multitude of players, Allison, Carroll, Burns, J. Miller, and at least a few DFA's from Andino, Cruz, Delgado, Kensing, Meyer, and Treanor for 25 man purposes. I'm also unsure if Marceaux and Mobley have to be protected, but I'm guessing yes.

The problem isn't losing him, he's Rabelo. Who cares. The problem is if we really have to clear 40 man space for pending moves, we have a lot of other DFA options, especially with the lack of catcher depth in the organization.

I think at this point we can't look individually at moves, because they are clearly making no sense. This offseason more than any, we're going to have to wait until the end of the year and view everything as a whole.

I never understood the FO's initial exuberance about Rabelo but talk about a fall from grace. I kind of feel bad for the guy. I don't think it will happen but maybe he'll get picked up. He'd be perfect in a Red Sox uniform. :mischief

Maybin will be the only good chip in the Cabrera trade, mark my words!

Basically a one for one swap!

Hopefully Maybin is a superstar

I think even if Maybin lives up to his full potential, he'll never be as good as Cabrera. But hey, you never know.

He'll never sniff Cabrera with the bat, but all things considered Maybin should be the better player.

You're going to be really wrong when Miller turns into a good starting pitcher and Cruz some form of reliever.

Mike Rabelo

I'm confused. Didn't you just suggest Cruz as a DFA candidate? I took that to mean that you aren't high on him. Unless DFA means something else. Doesn't someone that gets DFA'd have to clear waivers? Just curious. I actually belive that Cruz has a future with the Fish, especially as a reliever.

I'm 100% sure if I went back to last April I could find many posts saying Rabelo "was the man".

In truth we never saw him play when he wasn't injured and I for one am hoping he remains in the system, does well in New Orleans (so much easier to type than Albuquerque) and is available if we need him at some point next season.

That is me covering my bases on potential DFAs. I am near 100% confident Cruz is on the 25 man roster as the 6th or 7th relief pitcher, and the organization gives him a lot of leeway to make it. I agree with you he has a future with the fish.

It's just that Kensing, Cruz, J. Delgado, and Meyer are all out of options. Assuming Lindstrom, Nunez, Nelson, and Pinto are locks, which they pretty much are, and we carry 7 relievers, which we always do, we have at least 1 DFA coming our way from that group. So is he a candidate? Yea. Is it likely? No. Does he have a huge arm and projects to be a plus reliever? Yea.

Kensing and Cruz would be picked up immediately on waivers. Delgado and Meyer would have a chance of sneaking through.

I never really thought he had much of a future here anyway. He's a backup at best.
