November 19, 200817 yr I never really thought he had much of a future here anyway. He's a backup at best. A solid backup switch-hitting catcher is hard to find...
November 19, 200817 yr I think Rabelo kinda had a bad shake here since they decided to use him primarily as a LHB rather than really letting him be a switch hitter. And while the disparity isn't that huge, the numbers do say he hits better from the right side, so if no one picks him up I do hope he gets a shot at backing up Baker. We could certainly do worse at that backup position.
November 19, 200817 yr Hmmm...with him going on Waivers, I wonder if this strengthens the possibility of us signing a certain catcher... *cough*Pudge*cough* :compute

November 19, 200817 yr I never understood the FO's initial exuberance about Rabelo but talk about a fall from grace. I kind of feel bad for the guy. I don't think it will happen but maybe he'll get picked up. He'd be perfect in a Red Sox uniform. :mischief As the Sox are my 2nd team I would feel better if he was in a Yanks uni :thumbup
November 19, 200817 yr I'm confused. Didn't you just suggest Cruz as a DFA candidate? I took that to mean that you aren't high on him. Unless DFA means something else. Doesn't someone that gets DFA'd have to clear waivers? Just curious. I actually belive that Cruz has a future with the Fish, especially as a reliever. That is me covering my bases on potential DFAs. I am near 100% confident Cruz is on the 25 man roster as the 6th or 7th relief pitcher, and the organization gives him a lot of leeway to make it. I agree with you he has a future with the fish. It's just that Kensing, Cruz, J. Delgado, and Meyer are all out of options. Assuming Lindstrom, Nunez, Nelson, and Pinto are locks, which they pretty much are, and we carry 7 relievers, which we always do, we have at least 1 DFA coming our way from that group. So is he a candidate? Yea. Is it likely? No. Does he have a huge arm and projects to be a plus reliever? Yea. Kensing and Cruz would be picked up immediately on waivers. Delgado and Meyer would have a chance of sneaking through. Are you sure that Jesus Delgado is out of options? I looked at his mlb stats, and it only shows him being in the majors last season.

That's actually a common misconception which I assume is mostly the fault of poor reporting (Because most people in the media have the intelligence of...well, empty space and most misconception regarding baseball transaction rules are born there). Options are used when a player is on the 40 man roster and NOT on the 25 man roster. You can read more about it at Cots http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com

Before our worst case scenario was having Rabelo back up Baker, and Rabelo would likely be good for a low .700 OPS against LHP since he has done well from the right side of the plate throughout his career. Now our worse case scenario is Matt Treanor...who has a lower career OPS against LHP than RHP by FIFTY POINTS and will likely put up a ops in the high .500's. Not smart. Rabelo as a third string catcher is good for an organization. Ontop of that, he would have been our best in-house 2nd string catcher to Baker. Something has to go down for this to make sense.

Free agent signings or another trade is coming if we are this desperate to clear 40 man space. But I mean, can't you designate Greg Burns or Jai Miller? I mean seriously? What's up with liking all these toolsy outfielders? Did we not learn our lesson with Abercrombie Beinfest?
November 20, 200817 yr Better question, why is Jai Miller still playing baseball? He bats .250 in the MINORS, he should just give up on baseball period. I agree it would've been nicer to see us place Miller on waivers rather than Rabelo. Rabelo wasn't great, but had some good moments. Don't know if he would've been a good player if he played full time, but I believe he could've been a respectable backup to Baker

I agree it would've been nicer to see us place Miller on waivers rather than Rabelo. Not that I think Jai will someday be a great pro but what the hell are you talking about? He's hit + .260 for two seasons in a row. His OBP has been + .349 for two seasons in a row. He has slugged .432 and 472 the last two seasons. He plays a solid outfield and has a strong arm. He has good speed and he walks alot. And he's just going to be 24. Hope that answered your silly question.

I was under the impression that you have to be on the 25 man roster for it to count as an option.
