Jayson Stark postulates: Hermida deals

Featured Replies

Andy could fill that role, but as far as ptiching from that franchise, I'd rather get Jeff Niemann.

If Hermida is traded to the Rays and we don't get Wade Davis, I will consider it a disaster. EFF Niemann, Sonnastine, or E. Jackson.

I can't believe how much the Marlin fans in this forum undervalue Cantu. How many third basemen in all of baseball outperformed Cantu last year? I think immediately of ARod and David Wright and then slow down in a hurry. Didn't Cantu perform at least as well as high paid "stars" like Aramis Ramirez, Troy Glaus, and Adrian Beltre? Cantu would be an upgrade at third for at least two thirds of the teams in both leagues, comes at a remarkably low salary, and is at a prime age. Cantu should have huge trade value.

You do realize both Glaus and and Aramis had better OPS's than Cantu right? Aramis by 90 points...

And considering Beltre's VASTLY superior defense, I'd say he had a better season last year than Cantu even though Cantu had a 20 point OPS advantage.

3B's with better OPS's than Cantu:

Chipper

A-Rod

Wright

Aramis

Wigginton

Longoria

Glaus

Blalock

Mora

Dobbs

Guillen

That would rank Cantu 12th. Considering there's 30 teams (a.k.a. being "15th" would be exactly average), that puts him as above average, but not by much. Plus then factor in that he's one of the worst defensive 3B's in the league and you would say he's average.

Now there's ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with being average. Especially when you consider his cost last year, absolute bargain. Excluding pre-arb guys, he was likely at the top of price v.s. production for 2008. However, he'll be making a lot of money next year. And to say we're undervalueing Cantu and that's he's one of the top 3B's in the game is rather (extremely) excessive.

Totally agree.........I dont see why we would trade Cantu unless we are overwhelmed.......Cantu has proved what he can do and he will be playing for relatively cheap.............He was arguably our most consistent hitter last year and I would rather not have to rely on an unproven Gaby Sanchez AND and unproven Dallas Mcpherson/ Bonifacio..

I truly dont think the are gonna trade him unless they are blown away by an offer

and what the hell is Stark talking about......why would we want Bartlett, that makes absolutely 0 sense

Not that I have anything to say that Nny didn't, but the answer to "how many" is "a bunch". Cantu was NOT one of the top 3B in baseball. He was 19th in OBP and 9th in SLG. Depending on how much you value slugging, that puts him somewhere between slightly above average and slightly below average. And then when you add in defense, where he was ranked 30th in +/-, he would actually be a detriment to at least a simple majority of teams, not an upgrade.

And like Nny said, there is nothing wrong with being average, especially at the price.

Id be thrilled if i could be a average ML and i think everyone else here would to.

Yes, yes I would. There is nothing wrong with being an average player, much less an average starter.

And that's fine. But painting Cantu was one of the best 3B in baseball is wrong. I like him as much as the next guy (well, unless the next guy thinks is one of the top 3 guys at the hot corner), but he's not up there and he'd probably tell you that himself. I'm fine having him on this team.

I'd be thrilled to be like Jason Wood

That doesn't make him one of the top players in the league.

Oh I hope I'm the first to post this on Prince Charming...

Jeremy Hermida - OF - FLA - Dec. 8 - 12:10 pm et A "number of reports" are indicating that the Rays could be considering a trade that would send Jason Bartlett, Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnanstine to the Marlins for Jeremy Hermida.

Hermida could definitely be dealt during this week's winter meetings, but this particular deal might be a stretch. The Rays are in love with Bartlett and he is a cheap option at shortstop. The Cubs are also reportedly interested in Hermida. Dec. 8 - 12:10 pm et

And typical of RotoWorld the St Pete rumor is of course EITHER pitcher plus Bartlett because they have lousy reading comprehension, and we know where this is from.

Personally I think this whole thing could be a game of musical chairs because the value of such a move as this is fill pieces in other moves the Marlins might make like providing a third party with an interim SS they crave or another team starved for starting rotation help, without depleting our roster or prospects.

One last thought is a trade like this - unless it is to move the acquired pieces elsewhere - is it causes havoc with roster management.

Oh I hope I'm the first to post this on Prince Charming...

If we got Sonnanstine and Bartlett for Hermida I'd be thrilled. Move Hanley's ass to third base, deal McPherson, and keep Cantu and Gaby at first.

Now, if it's Jackson I say wtf.

I like how the article uses the words "could" and "definitely" right after each other.

I'm with you on that one.

Bartlett + Sonnastine/Jackson seems too good to happen, in terms of just the players actual values. Even though it favors us unless we can make more moves I wouldn't like it, who can replace Hermida in the outfield this year? We are only on 3 outfielders...I guess they could sign someone but I have no idea who.

Well, there's a good amount of people that feel Scott Cousins and/or Logan Morrison are ready for the big leagues now.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving Cousins first crack at it. I honestly think he could at least put up similar numbers to Hermida's 2008.

Even though this trade is good for the Marlins would it will never happen, just because imo we are getting too much for Hermida. But even if we get this offer I still wouldn't do it.

Not really. Bartlett is an all-defense SS, and a lot of people believe Sonnanstine and Jackson both played over their heads. Plus, look at Hermida's home/away splits, and you can see just how badly Dolphin Stadium hurts him. It's obscene. He'll OPS .850 just about anywhere else in the league. And he would fit perfectly with the Rays... I'd have to say, it's a pretty solid deal for both clubs.

I actually agree with this, although it would most likely be a lefty/righty switch with Cousins and Raynor taking share of the outfield. This would be a very good trade for us to get rid of a unproven Hermida for guys like Sonnanstine and Jackson, and to throw in a cheap Bartlett. Although this might in fact lead to Uggla becoming more available

Sonnastine would be the 7th best longterm SP in our organization (add West). He's not very good, he is very hittable with a mediocre K rate. These are stats that suggest improvement. He's a longterm 4. A very good 4, but we have guys with more upside. He is not needed. Jackson would be arguably 9th longterm (behind at least Thompson). These are not upgrades. These would be momentary depth acquisitions, and do nothing for us past 2009. Bartlett is not an upgrade over Coghlan or Bonifacio longterm. We have no use for him. If we trade Hermida, we need something that's going to be useful for years. These are backwards moves.

If you want to deal with the Rays, it starts with Wade Davis. Anything else, and we enormously lose.

I think it you get Bartlett, you either have to flip him elsewhere. They aren't looking to move him anywhere, especially with Dominguez moving up in the ranks. I like the idea of acquiring Bartlett, and I wish there was somewhere to put him, but there just isn't.

I disagree on Sonnanstine. He isn't overpowering, but he throws some real nice junk. He isn't going to K a lot of people, sure, but Dolphin Stadium should certainly help his cause. I don't see how he wouldn't be viewed as our #5 going into the season, and one of the best 5th starters in the game at that.

I'd rather have the 2 SP's and the SS that were on the team that was in the WS last year

All you are doing is supporting my argument. He throws junk, he's a back of the rotation starter, Hermida has plus potential, and even if he turns into a nominal player, still better than Sonnastine now or longterm. Bartlett is simply garbage.

NO SONNASTINE. We need a LONGTERM PIECE if we are going to trade him.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that it's been "quite a while" since the Marlins and Cubs have discussed Jeremy Hermida.

The Marlins reportedly want major league pieces for Hermida, while the players the Cubs consider expendable -- Felix Pie and Ronny Cedeno most notably -- don't seem like great fits for Florida.

From RotoWorld.

Is it me, or is a storm-a-brewin' in Vegas around Hermida. I have a feeling Beinfest is really trying to push a Cantu for Sanchez deal, and if that goes through it takes Hermida off the market, unless there's a real big offer for him. I think that could also be quite possible. I have a strong feeling that there's an all-out bidding war going on for Hermida between a few clubs right now, mainly Chicago and Tampa.
