March 29, 200917 yr http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2009/n...tory?id=4025531 I say congrats to him.
March 30, 200917 yr This is the right call. I don't think Marmol would be markedly better, and they would be crazy not to take advantage of Gregg's Type A status for next year. Although to be honest, he might take an arbitration offer; he's already making $4.2 million this year, and if the market stays down, though, they might not want to offer him arbitration.
March 30, 200917 yr eh, they should be molding Marmol as their future closer immediately as we are doing with Lindstrom now. Gregg had his good year with us, i guess the Cubs are hoping he reverts to his old self rather than his 08 self.
March 30, 200917 yr The Cubs are just being smart here. A lot of teams around the league are realizing now that you're best pitcher doesn't always have to be your closer. Pinella knows who the better pitcher of the two is but I'm sure he enjoys being able to employ Marmol at any point in the game. It's not like Marmol is going to be coming into any less games since he didn't get named the closer- in fact, he will likely be put into more. The problem is that there are constraints placed on the role of the closer its the only bullpen role that has a real definition to it as to when and when they shouldn't be used.
March 30, 200917 yr I really hope this doesnt bold well for the Cubs. Ive always been 50/50 with Gregg. Ive always had a dislike for the Cubs. (only thing i like about them is Wrigley and a few players) But seriously i really think Gregg is either going to blow or have a great year. Im betting he has a good year but blows it near the end

March 30, 200917 yr They are just playing statistics and a sample preview. His ERA is not terrible. Obviously the Cubs are foolish to not actually take into account how many games he blew. He would be a solid arm for like the 6th inning... but he sure does know how to blow leads...

Just another stopgap. he's still relatively young and has closer like material. Tucker may be the future closer, but I feel Lindstrom wins himself the job for a couple years.
