May 17, 200915 yr Author Wait, D-Stro of 790 just said on her twitter that the club has option Carlos Martinez to AAA, transfered Rick VandenHurk to 60-day DL, and activated de Aza to the current 25-man roster
May 17, 200915 yr I know he was the only candidate to be sent down at this time but does the team have something against Carlos Martinez as it seems he has seen barely any opportunities at the ML level (15.1 innings in 3 seasons covering 4 years). While I'm at it, how come Hayden Penn has only seen 2 appearances since the 5th of May?
May 17, 200915 yr how come Hayden Penn has only seen 2 appearances since the 5th of May? Perhaps he's next to be chopped. Not that lack of use is definitive, but it has been a fairly reliable precursor recently.
May 17, 200915 yr Penn has not options thats why, looks like they dont want to give up on him yet... If Alfredo does actually go on the DL, Martinez will come back up IMO, but I think there waiting to see if hes needs the DL or a few days rest...
May 17, 200915 yr Wiley, it's been written, is trying to "fix" Penn, it's almost like he's in extended spring training instead of on an MLB roster. As for Martinez his knock since he came back (from surgery)and was assigned to Carolina was his work ethic and commitment to his craft. It infuriated people in AA last season at times how little conditioning he did. What I keep thinking about should Amezaga actually go on the DL is what the top of the lineup will look like with EB and De Aza at the top (or will they be split up). The Marlins have had a picture in my mind since the beginning of the season of two speedsters at the top and it will be interesting how the lineup is constructed that follows. BTW, Bonifacio is in left today and Ross in center. Helms is at third.

May 17, 200915 yr out of all the guys I wanted to get called up to get another chance to prove themselves (no matter how temperary), I wanted De Aza to get his shot. Glad to see the call up.
May 17, 200915 yr Now we know we aren't going anywhere this season. Yes, I always judge my season by bench players. Brian Banks won us 2003.

You think we are done in May, you don't know how terrible it can get (because 2007, THAT was terrible), and you've said that you've only come back to baseball recently. If you think this is bad, you should have seen 2007. And if you think this is the end, you should have seen 2006. At least we have a better record than them at this point.

This is 2007 all over again. Almost exactly. Starting pitching depth killing us? It's deja vu.

This team is baaaaaaaaaad. And i don't mean bad to the bone. That's his point. The team in 2006 started 11-31, and had Logan Kensing closing games, at one point. They got a lot better after those 42 games. You never know. This team has more talent/experience.
May 17, 200915 yr All I have to say is I dont really care that De Aza was called up. As long as he rarely(never preferably) gets any ABs it really makes no difference.
May 18, 200915 yr Glad to have ADA back, he's been by far one of the best spring training players in Marlins history, well not as good as OMG Nunez

May 18, 200915 yr Now we know we aren't going anywhere this season. Yes, I always judge my season by bench players. Brian Banks won us 2003. No. But Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis did. Players go down and you have to have reinforcement from somewhere. We got the reinforcement from the minors that year until we went out and got some big help through trades (Conine, Urbina). Not only to we not have that kind of talent waiting in the minors to help out, but with moving Cantu to first and starting Bonifacio at third ( :mad ), we've effectively blocked Gaby and Morrison, the only guys who could really have somehow made a big impact this year. I do think Coghlan can be a good infield bat, but he is sorely miscast in Lf because he doesn't provide the kind of offense that is easily attainable from there. I think he could help at third, but we all know how much the team loves Bonifacio there so it's useless.

Well considering Gaby Sanchez and Logan Morrison are both currently injured, I don't think it ruined anything. I mean I really wasn't expecting Morrison this year and I wasn't expecting Sanchez until later in the season. My hope is that Gaby Sanchez will be in the starting lineup in 2010. For the rest of this year, I have no complaints about Cantu and Bonifacio is pretty brutal at the plate, but he's stellar defensively.

He does have middle infield range, which is a plus and has helped him make a couple nice plays, but he has also struggled making some other plays that third basemen usually make. And in the end, third base is not a position where a great defender makes enough of an impact to sacrifice a good bat. Usually, you want a combination of competent defense with an impact bat.
