Posted May 31, 200915 yr Mets defeat the Marlins 3-2. Volstad: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO 2B: Ramirez (16), Uggla (9)
May 31, 200915 yr Man I'd love to have another big bat besides hanley. With the way our staff is pitching now we should be winning more.
May 31, 200915 yr Good pitching performance by Volstad this afternoon. Cantu looked like a dud today. He could have easily given us two runs just by hitting a fly ball Maine is a pain. Hopefully we can hit him next time We just have to keep on pitching like the way we have been pitching lately. Hopefully our offense will get more consistant. Hopefully we can come home and win each of the series.
May 31, 200915 yr wat else is new with this team.....no idea how to manufacture runs we get great pitching and we lose........and now were gonna be a lovely 6 or 6.5 games out of the division already. a couple more like this and we will be way out. sick of this sh*t and the way this team loses. its one thing to lose and its another thing to lose like the marlins do.

The good news is this horrible month will be over tomorrow. The bad news is that we play the entire AL East in June.
May 31, 200915 yr Cantu has suddenly died for us and he's our cleanup man its tough to win games without him giving us at least a run scored or a run driven in. However the Coghlan/Bonerfag 1-2 Combo has work nicely.(Well at least yesterday and the little i saw today)
May 31, 200915 yr It's extremely frustrating to get a good pitching performance from Volstad and lose like this. Cantu looked completely lost at the plate today. His AB in the 8th was just terrible. With only one out and a man at third, that run had to come in- no excuses.
May 31, 200915 yr I'm not asking this facetiously because a) I don't have the answer and b) I'm curious if people agree with the above, who would you trade to bring in this bat we need? I'm sure the first twelve answers will be Bonifacio and Amezaga and Penn or maybe Raynor or someone else no "needs" to make their own push or complete their rebuilding, but seriously since I agree to some extent with the thought, how would people go about getting that missing piece that doesn't leave eight guys on in scoring position with one out or less?
May 31, 200915 yr If David Wright doesn't rob him today, you're all having no problem with Cantu. God forbid we give the Mets credit for actually playing a good ballgame. From the very good defense, to the fact that they manufactured all their runs...if the Marlins would've done that, we wouldn't be bashing the other team for playing badly. Does the offense still suck? Yeah. But really, we didn't get many breaks in this series, either. No breaks at all, as a matter of fact.
May 31, 200915 yr The team is playing much better lately. A couple of timely hits here and there and we could have easily swept the Mets. As long as the starting pitching continues to be as good as it has been in the last week or so, we will be fine. No time to panic yet.

What I think is that to make a run at the division or WC the starting pitching obviously needs to come together and we need to trade for two bats (LF and 3B) but I don't see us making any trades to acquire bats.
May 31, 200915 yr If David Wright doesn't rob him today, you're all having no problem with Cantu. Yep, I can't blame Cantu for Wright making a great play on his line drive.
May 31, 200915 yr I got very frustrated during this game, it just seemed like everyone was popping up off Maine's pitching. Hit some ground balls and good things will happen, they'll find a gap, an error will occur, runners can move up etc. etc. And, yes, Cantu was robbed by that Wright "catch". It just never felt like a game we should've lost. The Mets scored first with a walk, sacrifice and an unconvincing double going the other way. It got the job done meanwhile Uggla and Hanley hit balls off the wall that did nothing for us. Volstad was being very effecient with his pitch count, some better at bats and it could've gone our way. Bad luck? Maybe, but you also have to make some of your own luck in this game - popups and strikeouts don't do that.
May 31, 200915 yr Pitching seems to be coming around. Offense could be better. I hope they both click at the same time. While we may be falling behind in the NL East, we have been looking better lately and we always have the WC to fall back on.
May 31, 200915 yr Its basics, with one out and man on third that run has to come in one way or another. I don?t know how you can?t do that at this level of the game. I hope our pitching continues to be like this maybe west is going to be hard to pull out of the rotation. STUPID BASEBALL We need either cantu, uggla and/or hermida to step up and be the clutch hitter we desperately need!!
May 31, 200915 yr While we may be falling behind in the NL East, we have been looking better lately and we always have the WC to fall back on. Ah, we're further behind (at this moment) in the WC than in the East, 7 vs 6.5. If STL and MIL play .600 ball the rest of the year and/or someone other than the Dodgers gets hot in the West, the WC winner may wind up with a better record than the East winner, as is the case with the WC leader right now, after about 50 games. We probably stand a better chance of winning the division as we play the teams now ahead of us a lot and therefore have a chance to determine our own destiny.

May 31, 200915 yr We have only played 51 games. There are 111 games to go and we are only 6.5 games behind in the standings. Come on people! You can't seriously believe the party's over! We had a great start and a lousy month of May, that's all. Our starting pitching is improving and going deeper into the games. Sean Westwas impressive, Miller has improved, Johnson remains our stopper, Volstad continues to be reliable. If Nolasco comes back strong we can send the Hopper back to the bullpen for long relief. The way West has pitched, Sanchez will probably also end up in the bullpen when he returns.

Well, looking at our trade chips Logan Morrison, Cameron Maybin, and Michael Stanton should be basically as untouchable as gets. There's certainly exceptions, but teams aren't really going to be offering us Davis Wrights and Nick Markasises. If we look at non-prospects, we can say that Baker, Hanley, Cantu, and Uggla are basically untouchable because the chances of us getting better production out of ML players while trading them is extremely slim. Players like them are traded for prospects. Josh Johnson should not be moved because of just how good he is, Volstad because of how much club control we have. That leaves Cody Ross-Lot of Cody Ross's in the game, isn't a piece that can be moved for "better produciton now" Hermida-Can still cling onto "potential", and sure he was a part of the Manny deal, but it's been another year now. Another year of failed potentiel and another year close to free agency. He might be able to be part of a deal but unlikely. Anibal-Low Value at the moment because he has not come back from his injury well and already has another injury. His prospect status was always hurt because of his injury concerns and they've shown. Andrew-Service time and likely low value at the moment means we shouldn't move him our entire bullpen - none of this is really good enough for a trade, but certainly decent throw in candidates (young guys with service time like Nunez and Lindstrom). I think Meyer would be the most interesting in a trade if a team thinks he can convert back to a starter. Than when you go through prospects (aka lots of service time left). Bonifacio-Likely has little value at the moment Raynor/Petersen/Cousins-All struggling at the moment. Can be a "Will Smith" in a trade. Dominguez/Skipworth-Struggling so low value at the moment, and close up there with Morrison, Maybin, and Stanton. All our other hitters likely really don't have value, or are too low to really be able to judge their value in a trade. And then pitchers... West-Shouldn't be traded, service time Winters/RVH/ect-Again, these guys really aren't "focal point" trade material. They're good enough that they add value to a trade, but they're not going to be the main piece. That leaves Gaby Sanchez-We have options next year in Cantu and long term with Morrison. We can keep him (Slide Cantu to 3rd or trade him, and Flemming has continually said Morrison is going to play the OF), but we also have thd epth to move him. He seems to be somewhat of a polorizing spec though, so his value really depends on the front office we're dealing with. Chris Coghlan-We can move Bonifacio to second, and really only one of him and bonifacio "should" be playing. Again, a depth thing. He has more potential than Bonifacio, but if we need to make a move, we atleast have someone else that can cover seond base for us after Danny is gone. I think both Sanchez and Coghlan would have to be packaged togeather to get something good. It also leaves us with Ricky Nolasco. We have had starting rotation problems so far, but we could certainly concievably be fine in a month. If Anibal comes back strong from his injury, Andrew keeps pitching like has been, and West is strong, Badenhop has done fine as a #5, RVH is coming back from his injury, there's always the putting Meyer back as a starter if we need someone long term, ect. If he pitches well in June, I certainly imagine he'd still have value. I mean, CC pitched sh*tty for the first month or two last year but still got a lot back in a trade in early July. I'm not saying we'll get CC value, just saying that a bad month doesn't completely kill his value. I think, if we really want a really good impact bat, Ricky would have to be the guy we move.
May 31, 200915 yr Did the Mets hit a ball out of the infield with RISP today? They had like 2 doubles in 1 inning so im guessing yes

Between swinging bunts and a bloop double and another infield bunt and a great 14 go/ 4 ao game he just cant get any breaks.
