June 16, 200915 yr Which South Florida team is closest to a championship ??? I know this is a Marlins Fan Site but try not to be biased, your choices are the Miami Heat, Florida Panthers , Florida Marlins woot woot , and The Miami Dolphins. Try to vote and then explain why please !!!! As much as I dislike basketball (and hardly follow it, tbh) Im going to go with the Heat, based simply on the fact that 2 superstars can get you a championship and the Heat already have 1 and an opportunity to get another via trade.
June 16, 200915 yr I voted for the Marlins. Other than maybe 1 more big bat, I feel we already have all the tools in place to win a championship, all we need is for a consistency in our performances. Looking at the other sports teams - I don't know huge amounts about the Panthers but I think it's safe to say they aren't great considering they keep missing the playoffs. Likewise I don't know too much about hoops and the Heat. The problem I see with the Dolphins is the fact they need to go through the likes of New England, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh to even reach the Superbowl which is a massive task in itself.
June 16, 200915 yr I went with the Dolphins. Pennington nearly won the MVP Award last year, Brown/Williams is a good combo at RB. They don't have a #1 WR but do have 3 solid ones. Jake Long/Vernon Carey anchoring the O-line. Not to mention JT back on defense to go with Porter, Crowder and a re-vamped secondary with the additions of Davis, Smith and Wilson. Parcells and co are putting together a hell of a team.
June 16, 200915 yr The Heat. Like PWG mentioned, probably the easiest of the sports to quickly build a winner.
June 16, 200915 yr I'd go Heat for all of the reason's already mentioned, but you can't dismiss the Panthers. I know, I know...they haven't made the playoffs in forever, but they are close to getting there and in the NHL, that is pretty much all you have to do. Once in, any team can have a hot goalie and go very far. Lower seeded teams beat higher seeds all the time.
June 16, 200915 yr The Heat are the closest as much as I would like to believe it is the Marlins. The Heat have a lot of money to spend come 2010, they should be serious contenders that year, that's if they don't make a trade to make them serious contenders this season.
June 16, 200915 yr I agree with most that its the heat. I dont really follow basketball but i know it pretty much takes 2 stars to get a championship and the heat already have 1 in wade. Id say the dolphins and panthers are behind the marlins.
June 16, 200915 yr IMO the heat. If they get rid of Blount it clears 7 Mil of our payroll and ten we can get a good bench player for that money. Plus Beasley is likely to start and i hope at SF so we can keep Haslem and JO in the lineup and it should solve our rebounding problems. The only player I'm worried about is Mario Chalmers. He has to step up and keep the turnovers down and become a more consistent shooter then he'll be a solid Point Guard for many years. Dolphins are next as they really only need 1 good receiver to be better offensively. If we keep this wildcat thing going with that new QB/WR we drafted we can have a better Wild Cat option pass play to make the offense more unpredictable and a nightmare for opposing defenses.
June 16, 200915 yr It's gotta be the Miami Heat. Add to it an easy conference with only 3 other real contenders in the conference, with one of them aging, one losing a major player on its team, and another having only one true star and an average supporting cast, and the Heat have a GREAT chance within the next two years of going to the Finals. Second place would have to go to the Dolphins. They have the correct front office in place, they are building the team the correct way, they are drafting need positions and losing the weaks areas on the team each year, and have two options at QB for the future, which will be a big issue when deciding if they can contend in the future (next year will be tough). Third would have the be the Marlins. We all know they have that starting pitching getting very close to being near perfect, but still needs corrections. We have star minor leaguers near ready to take over for players who are either diminishing in talent or we will not be able to afford in the future. The reason they are this low is because they cannot keep the same core of players for too long, and that impedes any real shot of being contenders year in and year out. Last place is the Panthers, the team is probably the most messed up right now. Zednick gone, Martin leaves on no notice, Boweester (sp?) gone to free agency, the team really has no direction at this point.
June 16, 200915 yr Miami Dolphins. We have the FO to bring us a championship soon, IMO. I don't see the Heat winning mainly because the Orlando Magic and all the other high powered teams in the Western Conference.
June 16, 200915 yr Minus the heat i think most of the south fl teams are far away from a championship. I really cant see the phins winning a SB any time soon with Indy, NE, Pitt, Bal all being in the same conference. We all know about how the mlb playoffs can be won by an pretty team that gets hot at the right time.l I really have no idea about the panthers.

I don't see the Heat winning mainly because the Orlando Magic and all the other high powered teams in the Western Conference. LOL! f*** THE MAGIC! This was their one chance to do something and they blew it. If they ain't making their 3's, they ain't winning and you can't expect to go far with a team like that. Also, if they lose Turkoglu to free agency, they're super f***ed.

Also, your comment on us not making 3s is ignorant. We can have an off night and still win games, I've seen the Magic do it before. We can win without Hedo. As Dwight goes, we go. Face it, the heat have NO ONE to stop Dwight, and I doubt they find someone. And even If they do get by Orlando, Cleveland, or Boston(doubt it), they cannot beat ANYONE in the West. I don't care who they sign in 2010. They are not going to beat Orlando because they CANNOT stop Dwight Howard. Plain and Simple.

You can get a superstar in 2010, and you most likely will. But there is no who is going to be able to stop Dwight Howard. He will be in his prime, the beginning of his dominance. And even If you do, how do expect to stop our other players like Nelson, Lewis, Lee, Pietrus, and maybe even Hedo Turkoglu? We have to many weapons IMO. But hey, it should be fun seeing Orlando vs Miami.

We don't need to stop him because in our 2 wins vs Orlando he basically stopped himself. He fouled out in both and scored 12 and 16 points with 5 turnovers in each game. And yes most off your loses have been when you shot less then 45% from the 3 point line.

June 16, 200915 yr 1. Heat 2. Marlins 3. Dolphins (you have the steelers and patriots in the AFC nuff said) 4. Panthers (red wings and penguins may have about 3 more rounds at each other before anyone else gets a chance)

Wade is much better than Howard so I don't know why you are even trying to take shots at him. I wasn't impressed with your team entering the playoffs, you guys just got hot at the right time and lucky enough to play the Celtics without KG. Nelson/Lewis/Howard doesn't scare anyone. You better hope your FO adds a significant player with the cap space they're getting from Hedo leaving because as it stands right now you are probably looking at the 5th seed.
June 17, 200915 yr Heat, easily. I'd go Marlins second just through the "anything can happen in baseball" theory, they could have a 2006 Cardinals type of thing. Dolphins are good, closer to the playoffs but beating the best teams in the NFL is way harder than in MLB. And lastly, the Cats.

June 17, 200915 yr Miller23, I'm sorry, but nobody really is intimidated by a Nelson/Lewis/Howard trio. Howard has never emerged as a true scoring threat, Lewis lives at the three point line, and Nelson averaged 5 assists as a point guard, not really that good. Turk made all the clutch shots for you guys, without him you guys will still be 3rd or 4th in the conference next year, but won't go as far next year as you did this year.
