June 18, 200917 yr The marlins 6th overall pick, Kyle Skipworth, is hitting .189 at greensboro. through 169 at bats he has 32 hits 69 strike outs and 14 walks. through his last 15 at bats he has one hit with 11 strike outs. his last 11 at bats has 9 strike outs and no hits. Kyle has been hitting under .200 the entire season i find it to be a big concern since he is playing in GREENSBORO LOW CLASS A, a dream for hitters. he also struggled in rookie ball last season hitting .208. is it too early to declare bust on skipworth?? i would have liked to see the marlins draft Yonder Alonso instead. wat do u guys think??
June 18, 200917 yr moved to minor-league forum. Too early but yeah it's brutal. If he keeps it up this would rank up there with our worst draft picks ever.
June 18, 200917 yr Right now Skipworth is probably the lowest-performing of any 1st round (non-supplemental) pick. Several of the guys drafted behind him have already made it to the majors. One guy the Marlins should have taken instead was former top college catcher Jason Castro, who is moving along very fast in the Astros' system.
June 18, 200917 yr Perhaps a move to Jamestown in a week or so when that league starts would help? His K numbers are scary, as for his defense it was supposed to be above average when he was drafted, a complete package.
June 18, 200917 yr If we had a slightly crappier record in 2007, we could have gone after Buster Posey, who could be SF's starting catcher by next Opening Day. Although, we're probably too cheap to have signed him, because his bonus was about $8 million.
June 18, 200917 yr Well hey if we suck enought this year we can get bryce harper in the 2010 draft who's a beastly catcher.
June 18, 200917 yr moved to minor-league forum. Too early but yeah it's brutal. If he keeps it up this would rank up there with our worst draft picks ever. He was considered the best catcher in the draft by pretty much everyone, so I dont think you can look down on the Marlins FO for it. That said, he just turned 19 and has all the necessary tools to turn it around and be the bat he was projected to be.
June 18, 200917 yr I watched Posey in the college world series, I wanted to draft him really badly. Sad when he got picked just before we had the chance. Posey was batting like .450 and could throw a 95 MPH fastball. Only real thing I knew about Skipworth was that he had 19 consecutive hits in high school, which was some sort of California record.
June 19, 200917 yr Joe Mauer. Wow! He better turn it around fast. It was a shallow comparison. Both from prep schools and both catchers. That's all it took.

I had no problem with the selection, especially since we have no catching prospects in the system.
June 19, 200917 yr I pray that he pans out like Mauer, good defensively and great offensively. I doubt he'll put up the power numbers that Mauer has this season though.
June 19, 200917 yr You don't draft high school catchers in the first. It's the largest flame out of any position. Horrible Pick. Hated it then, hate it now. Wanted Crow. (Despite the contract issues, still the better pick).
June 19, 200917 yr Crow wouldn't have signed though. I still really wanted Posey, he is going to be a very good MLB player, but again he wouldn't have signed with the marlins either. But even if we weren't able to sign them, we would've gotten the first round pick and would've been able to draft a guy like Alex White or Jacob Turner.
June 19, 200917 yr http://www.thebaseballcube.com/draft/2008/12.shtml Who would currently be considered our best pick in 2008? I mean we all know Michael Stanton was the best pick in 2007.

Way too early to say considering short season ball hasn't even started yet. But it'll probably come from one of the pitchers we took from round 2-15. Almost all of them have real nice potentiel.

The draft is the one thing the FO spends money on
June 19, 200917 yr So far the best pick from 08 would either be Graham Johnson or Issac Galloway(steal of the draft). Blake Brewer and Edgar Olmos have great potential as well.
June 19, 200917 yr Skipworth was NOT the best catcher in the '08 Draft. He was the best high school catcher, but that really isn't saying a whole lot. This is the first time I've heard the Joe Mauer comparison. Posey was the best overall catcher in the draft, without any argument. He absolutely demolished ACC pitching all of 2008 (and 2007).
June 19, 200917 yr What happens if he finishes up the season hitting around .200? Does he just come into 2010 hitting at such a low level? Do you approach your No.1 pick a bit differently or do you wait for him to have some success at a level before moving him up?
