Posted August 1, 200915 yr Although I'm very happy that the Marlins acquired Nick Johnson, I've been wondering if he's gonna stay in our team after this season. I don't want to lose Aaron Thompson, a guy who was a top pitching prospect, for a rental that's gonna bolt after the season
August 1, 200915 yr Highly doubt it. That said, Thompson wasn't really that big of a piece. His standing on the team seemed to fall with every passing day.
August 1, 200915 yr If Nick Johnson has an amazing rest of the season with us, there's gonna be teams out there that will over pay for him, and I just don't see the Marlins getting into a bidding war with anyone. Plus the fact that he's 30 .... that's too old for the Marlins to sign to a multi-year contract.
August 1, 200915 yr Theres not really high demand for 1B imo.. especially one who doesn't hit homers. With us getting power from non power positions, i could see us resigning him. I think it'd be nice to implant a rock solid number two hitter in front of hanley for the next few years. Obviously itd be nice to get a 1B or 3B who can mash and bat 4th but we don't have that right now.. so now just get someone who can get on base for hanley and play a good glove and i'll be happy....... for the time being. Â Â I love Jorge.. but wouldn't it be awesome if he turned in to a 40+ HR guy... because thats what we are missing. Off topic but what is his contract status?
August 1, 200915 yr Who is going to overpay for him to start at a power hitting position because I'd like to know. Theres alwas the pirates i guess... or back to the nats.

August 1, 200915 yr Author Due to his past of injuries and the lack of a need for 1st baseman, I could see us signing him to a one or two year contract. He might not get more than 3 million a year though, so if another team is interested in him, im not so sure that we may keep him. I hope we do though, he's a great hitter and he's good with the glove. He's gonna really help us out this year.

Off topic but what is his contract status?  There are very few scenarios in which the Marlins would resign Nick Johnson, I would guess only with a significant drop in salary. I am sure that having Morrison eagerly waiting for his chance at the Bigs cuts down on NJ's chances of remaining in Teal and Black
August 1, 200915 yr No. We have great organizational depth at 1B right now. Both Gaby Sanchez and Logan Morrison figure to battle for the job next year at a much cheaper price than what Nick Johnson would warrant.
August 1, 200915 yr The only thing that gives me comfort is I know what I'm getting with him here. We have the horses to make a run next year...I don't want another boni debacle messing up a good season. I'm glad we nipped it in the bud this year... granted a few months too late. Â I just like Nick Johnson pretty much where I'm at. I don't like him enough where I'd overpay for him though... don't get me wrong.
August 1, 200915 yr I think it depends on how the rest of the season plays out. Loria spoke very highly of him and apparently has wanted the guy for years, so I guess they could re-sign him if the price is right. I also think they'll spend a little money this offseason with the stadium being built(hopefully including a long term deal for JJ). Plus it is likely they'll flip Uggla and Hermida, opening up the money being paid to them. If you have Maybin in CF, Morrison at 1st or OF, Coghlan in LF or 2nd, and Baker/Paulino at C, most of your lineup is making the minimum or close to it. So bringing back NJ could be something they'll explore if he pans out like he should, but all of this will work itself out.
August 1, 200915 yr Personally I'd rather see Morrison in left field if can play the position competently. I know he's played there a few times in the minors. LF - Morrison CF - Maybin RF - Ross 1B/3B - Cantu 2B - Coghlan ss - Ramirez 3B/1B - Gaby Sanchez?? C - Baker Gone - Hermida, Uggla EVENTUALLY...this front office is going to have to give Gaby Sanchez a shot.
August 1, 200915 yr They dont have to. In fact, his recent call up shows that they are rather apathetic to it.
August 1, 200915 yr A lot can happen between now and free agency, considering we are in the playoff hunt and Johnson is a key acquisition. But even in the slim chance (considering our escalating payroll) that Johnson is re-signed, it would only be for one year because of Morrison getting closer to the majors.
August 1, 200915 yr We wont resign him. Even if we win the world series. NJ is a loan for the rest of this year.
August 1, 200915 yr Considering how the market crashed for Nick Johnson's type last offseason, I don't think it's farfetched to say he'll make 1 year, sub 5 mil. We could fit that in if we either want Morrison in the minors for another year (no thanks) or want to move him to LF (considering his lack of playing time there it seems to be a squashed decision by the FO). And by that point it'd basically be Nick Johnson v.s. Cody Ross, since monetary they should make around the same. Probably better to stick Cody in LF and Morrison at first.

August 2, 200915 yr The main reason we won't sign Nick Johnson next year - Wes Helms. Damn that 2 year contract.
August 2, 200915 yr (I can't believe people are still complaining about Wes Helms on any level and as irrelevant as it is to this thread but i couldn't let it go, my bad), but it's been written that the reason Rizzo opted to move Johnson even though there was more interest generally about Willingham was that Johnson (ala Arthur Rhodes) wants a two year contract in free agency.
August 2, 200915 yr 1st NJ 2nd Couglan SS Ramirez 3rd Cantu RF Ross CF Maybin LF Morrison C Baker Subs: Paulino, Helms, Bonafacio, Gload, BC Uggla and Hermida traded, hopefully we can get back a decent projected back of the rotation starter and maybe a decent IF/OF utility guy for them Would like to see the club try to keep NJ, just the kind of high OBP/contact hitter this teams needs a massive infusion of. A lefty who hits all pitching. Also good defensively. Maybe 3-4 mil will do (2yrs, 7.5 mil ?). No doubt in my mind we'll be force feeding Morrison and Maybin into the starting lineup beginning of next year, no matter what. We'll need a professional hitter like NJ to help Hanley and Cantu in countering the trials and tribulations the club will be dealing with in relying on 3 inexperienced bats in the lineup (I'm including CC). I don't think Loria would have to open up his wallet all that much more to field this lineup. Of course if Cantu proves impossible to play at 3rd base (his play last night was terrifying), keeping NJ becomes very problematical. I would like to keep both....and for god sake get JJ signed long term so we lock up the arbitration yrs and at least 1 free agent yr-4yrs 38 ml should do, back loaded of course.
August 2, 200915 yr NJ will NEVER lead off on this team. Ever. Not that I really know why you would put NJ ahead of Coghlan.

He's a free agent this year, with no certainty of returning to the Nats (they need to move Dunn and Willingham into easier defensive positions, and their only good position player prospect, Marrero, is a 1B/corner OF). Due to injuries, Nick does not qualify for draft pick compensation. Johnson's value was limited to how he performed on the field this past two months. That means nothing to the last-place Nats. The question wasn't why one or the other was traded. Johnson was certain to be moved. Willingham would have been for the right deal.
