Ok Guys, I posted Earlier about my project and the "All Time" Marlin team. The professor Im doing this for is grading strict, and Im down to one postion. Catcher. Pudge and CJ are neck in neck but I cant really decide. Being a fan since 96, I know CJ won some awards along with a WS. But Pudge will go down as one of the best catchers to play, and he also has a WS. Some other mentioned Piazza and Benito. Imput would help!

It depends your criteria. If it's not an issue of years played etc., it's hard to fault Pudge's 2003 - .297/.369/.474/.843 and the catcher for a World Series team.

I'd go with Pudge...I mean...the guy is simply a better catcher than CJ ever was. Doesn't mean CJ wasn't good, but CJ isn't a hall of fame catcher, Pudge is.

Pudge had a great year in 2003 but CJs '97 year was a good one. Bunch of HRs, an all star along with a gold glove and a phenominal World Series vs. the Indians... throw in his longevity with the fish and the choice is an obvious one, imo.

CJ pretty much spent his career as a Marlins and was the 1st Marlin ever drafted...Pudge is the best catcher of this era and gave the Marlins one year which was a heck of a year. However CJ bleeds marlin blood so I go with CJ

Should we ignore the story about Cliff Floyd and CJ at the latter's house rooting for the Yankees in 2003?

I suppose. But I have to admit it colored my view of CJ.

That said, he was a helluva catcher too and part of a helluva team, the more I think about it, it's really a tough question being posed.

Personally I would choose CJ over Pudge. CJ was drafted by the Marlins and spent quite a few years with the organization. Both catchers won a title with the team but CJ also caught a few no-hitters and is a much bigger part of Marlins history than Rodriguez ever will be. Pudge only played with us for a year after a down season and bolted at the end of the 03 season for more money.

I believe 2. Leiter's and Brown's. Almost had one with Alex in Chicago. BTW Watch tape of those celebrations. CJ left his mask on and popped Al pretty good with it with the hugs. Learned his lesson with Brown's. I noticed it and found it pretty humorous while it was happening.

In any case, I thought part of your criteria was what player meant more to the team. Local boy, played for local colleges, Marlins first draft pick, helped lead the team through it's infancy to a championship quicker than any team in history at that time, etc... Heck, his wife even did the National Anthem a few times. (Good voice.)

Even tho I agree with 2003 about that thing with Floyd discoloring my image of CJ a little (to be honest, they both thought they had been treated unfairly by the team, and in CJs part also by the fans his last stay here), I think the choice is obvious.

CJ.Pudge had a chance to make it something special and bolt to go to a sorry as city like detroit.I dont know if we would have gone after delgado had he stayed, but if we did :o can you picture our 2,3,4,5 hitters in the line up

castillo

pudge

delgado

cabrera

lowell may would have had a better season who knows

that would have been a scary line up

I'd go with Pudge even though he was only here for a year. He was basically the face of the franchise that year and the star of that postseason.

WHAT?!?!?!

where did you hear this?

link please?

CJ was a marlin full time.

Pudge was a temp.

Title goes to CJ.

C.J.because he's was our 1st ever draft pick, won a World Series as our Starting Catcher and was here for more then 1 season.

CJ caught AJ's during his second stint here. Crazy to think one guy has caught 3 of our 4 no-no's.

Pudge by a mile.

Mike Redmond.

LOL You are correct. When I was typing that I was trying to remember who caught that game. His name never came to mind. Nice pick-up Rab.

Just to add a little. I was talking this over with a friend yesterday and he made a pretty strong case for Bennie. Didn't change my mind, but Bennie sure was fun to watch play. Throwing guys out from his knees, etc... The first ST he caught Haugh he took Uncle Charlie by surprise on a throw to 2B. Interviewed after the game, Charlie said the guy nearly took his head off. You could always count on him for a good quote.

Pudge by a mile.

Please make the case for this. I don't know how anyone can say this except for not having any idea about who CJ is.

I think alot of people go by CJ's second stint here and remember the disappointment that he "only" played up to his career averages and not the offensive explosion he had in the AL. It's not a fair comparison by any means. Those of us that are old enough to remember that first draft, his call up, and his play behind the plate before the Huizenga money saving crap know better.

CJ is one reason I never cared for Gary Carter as an announcer for us. But that is a totally different story.

Eh...I think Pudge may have been a bit juiced during his time here...
