April 26, 201016 yr A month in the minors would also keep him from being Super 2 status :whistle And we know how much the arbiters love hits, so he could be in for a realllllllly big payday. I could live with a month of Brett Carroll + Boni/Petersen/whoever else in exchange for saving that money and being able to use it elsewhere later. Noy agreeing with the $$ tie-in. Money is becoming less of an issue, and will be even less by the time he comes arby eligible. I think he was just off to a slow start, got injured which prolonged the slump, and now is trying to over compensate. He's smart enough to start making the adjustments. Just keep him lower in the order until it starts clicking again. Money being less of an issue does not mean it is not an issue. If you delay his Super 2, you have an "extra" $2 million to spend in 2012 on say, a real bench bat and not Mike Lamb or keeping Matt Lindstrom if I'm just using current year players as examples. I think that's pretty valuable. But, you can send him down whenever over the course of the season. I don't have "amnesia" to 2009 like someone else said in the thread, but I do think there is a point where you send him down for a month if this continues. I'd say that's probably June. Which is a real good month to call up Morrison for exactly the same reasons. I'd personally keep batting him # 2 probably for another 10 games, then a demotion to batting 7th for 2-3 weeks, and if there still is nothing, send him down for a little while and reap the super2 delay if you can. That's a "bonus" at this point if he keeps sucking, but I agree you don't make the move for money. You make the move because Coghlan is struggling and needs to clear his head for a few weeks seeing softballs in NOLA. Yes, I agree completely. I didn't mean to imply that I would do it merely for money reasons, because that would be ridiculous. No, I would only do it if he continued struggling epically for a while longer and needed a trip to AAA to figure things out. In that case, the saving would be a nice outgrowth, but it's not enough of a reason to send him down. No problem there. But let's totally get past this $$$ thing. Even mentioning it is not being aware of what is happening; no offense intended. We are never going to be a top spending team. By 2012, or soon after, we will be a middle of the road spending team. $$$ won't be an issue. We have in the past, and will continue, to bring guys up and use them if their talent/developement deems it worthy. Regardless of what that means to their arby eligibility. That has never been the problem or scenario some would like us all to believe.
April 26, 201016 yr Just to remind anyone who might be unaware of it, a "middle of the road spending team" in MLB has a payroll of about $80 million. That's the average, give or take a small amount. Considering what this club has done with between $25 and 45 mill, the results with 80 or so might be quite impressive, as long as they don't forget what got them this far.
April 26, 201016 yr I don't understand why the Marlins would want to wait until June to send him down. Hopefully the last two games are a sign that he is coming out of this, but if he continues to struggle, it becomes a liability to have his bat and glove in the line-up consistently. Even if they start Coghlan every other day, he's not getting the consistent ABs that he needs. A couple of weeks in AAA could serve him well. I would say that the Marlins should give him to the end of the homestand (May 6th). If he isn't hitting by then, send him down. How long he stays down there should depend on his own progress and how well Carroll (or whoever else) hits in the interim.
April 26, 201016 yr I would give him just about the entire month of May. Given how well he hit last year, I think he deserves two full months. How comfortable are we with his potential replacements?

Brett Carroll is fine with the stick, and he'd not only improve our OF relative to Coghlan, but if Fredi would use his brain and put BC in RF with Cody in LF, it'd be an even bigger defensive improvement.

Yes, but who will be Carroll's back up? I agree that it is a significant upgrade defensively. Given how poorly Coghlan's performed, I am sure Carroll would outperform him offensively.
April 26, 201016 yr maybe some small signs of imporovement in the colorado series, 3-8 with a walk.... 3 k's in the last game though. He just doesn't seem to have the patience or pitch selection from last season. Fortunately Maybin's had a nice start.
April 26, 201016 yr Probably Bonifacio or Petersen would be called up if Coghlan were demoted. I trust Carroll would hit adequately enough to be playing nearly every day. His glove is good enough to make up for underwhelming offensive production. The problem with Coghlan slumping at the plate is that the Marlins now have to deal with a bad bat and a bad glove.
April 26, 201016 yr I agree that they should give him till the end of this homestand, and send him to AAA if his numbers dont improve. It did Ricky Nolasco really good last year to be sent down, hopefully it will do the same for Cogs. As far as his replacements, its a given that BC would be the starter, and I think Boni would be the backup. I hope Cogs gets it figured out quick.

A good guess would be Peterson. IF this were to happen. Big IF tho. The team likes Petereson and Boni needs the ABs every day that he wouldn't get up here. His pitch selection still isn't where it should be. There is plenty of time down the road for him and Peterson's progression may be boosted with a taste of the bigs for a couple weeks or so.
April 27, 201016 yr Hasn't Chris seen his numbers improve over the last week or so anyhow? I am not saying he's raking or anything but I've seen a string of singles.

I think he is now 4-11 and while hitting .363 over such a short period is hardly earth shattering, it is a step in the right direction

Thing with BP is he is not on the 40 man. We've trimmed all the fat off of it as of late (Jai, C. Martinez, Penn, etc), so if we DFA a minor leaguer (Sinkbiel, Buente, Harvey, H. Jones, Hayes, etc), some team would scoop them up and put them in AAA real fast. Becomes a question of who you want to lose in order to clear space for Petersen and if that is necessary. Which I would say, is not necessary. Carroll can carry the load and we can call up a bench player. I would think Bonifacio comes back and hangs out on the bench for a week or two with Carroll starting. Because the other 40 man OF option, Scott Cousins, is really struggling in AAA. Just not BP's time yet.

I may be wrong but I think we have 39 on the 40-man right now since we DFA'd Veras and haven't added anyone to the 40-man since that I can recall.

MLB site shows 39, and I can't think of anyone that "should" be there instead. Yea, so ok BP can come up. No problem with him going onto the 40.

I think he is now 4-11 and while hitting .363 over such a short period is hardly earth shattering, it is a step in the right direction Hopefully he can keep that up, I think the biggest issue for me has been a drastic increase in K's. Also he only has 3 walks this season, almost seems like he is pressing a little too hard.

I knew that Cousins was slated to be the next outfielder after Carroll, but I had realized that he was struggling too much in AAA to be called up. EDIT: Nevermind-Admin had to tell us both how it is. :lol
April 27, 201016 yr Want another outfielder name - John Raynor DFA'd by Pittsburgh, will more than likely clear waivers in a few days. We could place him right onto the 25 man and see what that is about and not force BP onto the 40 man just yet. I mean, that's all assuming we have to make a move with Coghlan which I'd venture to say we won't and he'll get better.
May 3, 201016 yr Most amazing tidbit I uncovered for 3 Strikes: Chris Coghlan is first player in last 50 years with avg. under .200, 0 XBH & 90 PA on May 3
May 4, 201016 yr He's ran in to a few singles lately but his swings are just terrible. He's getting on top of literally every pitch he sees as evident by his 0-5 with 5 GOs a week or two ago. I don't really have a problem with giving him a bit to see if he can sort things out but he needs to do it elsewhere in the lineup.
May 4, 201016 yr Im telling you he looks like he's swinging way too hard. That hasnt been the case as of late but when the season began it looked like he was trying to crush the ball and was just repetitively missing. Now he's just not getting hits. But he's loosened up his swing a bit. So it's a step in the right direction. Baby steps. It's a sophomore slump. He'll be fine.
