What in the world is wrong with Chris Coghlan?

What do u think about moving everyone 1 spot in the batting order and putting CC in the 8th spot til he figures himself out?

Nah, I put Baker behind Maybin batting 2nd and then have the rest of the order the same. Coghlan would bat 8th.

Disagree. This would put Hanley batting second, and Cantu batting 3rd. It would diminish the RBI opportunities for both of those players. The solution is to switch Gaby Sanchez and Coghlan in the batting order.

I agree with this but just relax I believe in the Cog this is only his second year; He just needs to remember what made him successful.

I just don't see Fredi moving Gaby up to the 2 hole. He likes his line up to have the right left thing going when he can get it, especially at the top.

That is a good point. Baker moving up to the 2 slot would be the most ideal possibility, then. I wouldn't mind that at all.

2009 BB%: 9.4%

2010 BB%: 4.4%

2009 K%: 15.3%

2010 K%: 23.8%

That's it in a nutshell. Usually when this happens the good luck from the previous season turns into bad luck. This time, while that may still be a factor, he clearly isn't taking the same approach at the plate as he did last season.

For some reason I hate baker on the 2 spot. I can't put my finger on what it is yet.

This seems like an incorrect gut feeling then. I don't have statistics at hand, but from off the top of my head memory John Baker has produced quite a few RBIs in the 2 hole, usually with Maybin on base.

Yeah I hope it is. I don't have anything against Baker.

It sure seems like he is swinging at bad pitches and trying to poke a base hit to get him going.

How long do you stick with Cohglan before you send him to the minors to get his hitting stroke back?

Till the end of next week maybe. Being back at home against Washington and San Diego is as good a chance as any to rediscover his bat.

I give him until the second week of May. He's just going through a pro-longed slump. He won the ROY, so we have to give him a chance to get back on track and not panic.

We all know that Chris will get his stroke back, but in the meantime he is hurting the team. The sophomore slump has a lot to do with how the pitchers adjust to the hitters finding their weaknesses. They seem to be pitching him more low and outside and he is having trouble taking some of the balls he took last year.

I don't know if sending him to the minors will help him adjust to the changes the major league teams have made this year. However, if it is more of a mental thing, a lack of confidence, then he needs to go to the minors so that he can relax at the plate and get his confidence back up.

A month in the minors would also keep him from being Super 2 status :whistle

And we know how much the arbiters love hits, so he could be in for a realllllllly big payday.

I could live with a month of Brett Carroll + Boni/Petersen/whoever else in exchange for saving that money and being able to use it elsewhere later.

Seems like Cogs might be a slow starter (like Mark T. From the Yanks), the 1st half of 2009 he was pretty aweful, same now... He picked up the slack in 2009 only after Nick Johnson come to the ballclub, that's when he showed the plate discipline everyone keeps referencing.

When talking about '09 why is everyone claiming amnesia of CCs first two months of the 2009 season???

I think we should consider whether he's a fast starter. And you're right - he didn't start off that well. We need to give him a chance. This isn't a video game.

Have you guys noticed his batting/swing technique? It's awful! He looks like his swinging at a pinata out there. He's not maintaining eye contact with the ball, his swing is shaky... What the hell happened to his technique?

This may sound dorky is very dorky BUT in the 2009 season I got to sit in the batter's box section(these are the seats directly behind the catcher and between both dugouts) a few times (all after all-star break, this was when CC was a OBP machine) and noticed that when Cogs would warm up on deck he would get in his regular stance and only swing the bat with his left arm, letting the right arm just hang, looks like it was just practicing "putting the bat on the ball", something he is struggling with this year. The only reason I picked up on it is b/c not may plater's get ready to bat that way.

Haven't seen him do that this year (haven't missed a home game in 2010 but my season tickets are now on the 3rd base bullpen area so I get an obstructed view of the on deck circle).

Just a thought...

Nice.. Game #1 just wrapped up, Marlins win!!!

Noy agreeing with the $$$ tie-in. Money is becoming less of an issue, and will be even less by the time he comes arby eligible. I think he was just off to a slow start, got injured which prolonged the slump, and now is trying to over compensate. He's smart enough to start making the adjustments. Just keep him lower in the order until it starts clicking again.

Money being less of an issue does not mean it is not an issue. If you delay his Super 2, you have an "extra" $2 million to spend in 2012 on say, a real bench bat and not Mike Lamb or keeping Matt Lindstrom if I'm just using current year players as examples. I think that's pretty valuable.

But, you can send him down whenever over the course of the season. I don't have "amnesia" to 2009 like someone else said in the thread, but I do think there is a point where you send him down for a month if this continues. I'd say that's probably June. Which is a real good month to call up Morrison for exactly the same reasons.

I'd personally keep batting him # 2 probably for another 10 games, then a demotion to batting 7th for 2-3 weeks, and if there still is nothing, send him down for a little while and reap the super2 delay if you can. That's a "bonus" at this point if he keeps sucking, but I agree you don't make the move for money. You make the move because Coghlan is struggling and needs to clear his head for a few weeks seeing softballs in NOLA.

I think this is the real problem, not pitchers adjusting to him yet. The way he's swinging the bat makes it irrelevant whether or not the pitchers are making adjustments.

Yes, I agree completely. I didn't mean to imply that I would do it merely for money reasons, because that would be ridiculous. No, I would only do it if he continued struggling epically for a while longer and needed a trip to AAA to figure things out. In that case, the saving would be a nice outgrowth, but it's not enough of a reason to send him down.
