Leaning into pitches to break up a perfect game makes the team look just as bad.

The problem is that the team isn't hitting. There were three holes in the lineup for most of the night in addition to the pitcher (Coghlan, Maybin, Hayes). The Marlins didn't even have anyone on the bench and sent out Mike Lamb.

There is a problem with team depth right now and it goes above Fredi's head.

Yeah seriously, I don't really like Fredi but looking at the players on this team right now, that's certainly not his fault. Maybe another manager could be getting a marginal difference out of these players, but the fault is with the players on the team and that resides squarely with the FO.

Yes it is. Seriously, how is it not? It was a routine catch...it was known that defense was needed tonight with 2 aces on the mound. The Marlins pitchers gave up nothing. Without the error, Roy Halladay just has a perfect game through 9, in a 0-0 ballgame. He also cost us a run last night, which was costly considering that, too, ended up being a 1 run loss. He deserves plenty of blame. Considering how much he sucks at the plate, he should be playing great defense out there (which all scouts said he'd become). Right now...he's just competing with Chris Coghlan to see who's worse.

Okay simply forgetting that we got blanked across the stat line today (in reference to the perfect game)... did the Marlins have a run?

No.

So how was the 1 run charged to Maybin what cost us the game again? Maybe there would be more of an argument here if we'd lost... 2-1? Maybe then the 1 run Maybin let up would be more of a case there. But still... we could've lost this game 5-0 all based off of errors... so long as we got a perfect game thrown against us those 5 runs mean nothing because the main stat is 0 runs.

100% of the time if you do not score a run you do not win the game.

100% of the time if you do not get 1 base you do not win the game.

99.999999999% of the time if you do not get a hit you do not win the game.

This is just throwing numbers around... but...

90% of the time when you let up 1 run you win the game. Just sayin.

Very true. The Marlins did not score. The Phillies did not score, either. Maybin scored for them. Thus, Maybin played a huge part in the Phillies victory. If he makes the routine catch, it's 0-0 in the 10th inning, and we have a chance to win the game. If he cuts the ball off last night like he's supposed to, it's 2-2 in the 10th inning, and we have a chance to win the game. A lineup will slump, but those plays have to be made, especially in a game tonight where you're playing the Phillies, led by, arguably, the best pitcher in baseball, Roy Halladay.

It is impossible in every single way to blame Fredi Gonzalez in this situation. Fredi manages who plays. Not how well they play. If nobody (the entire team)plays well in an entire game (a.k.a. nobody gets on base) there is nothing he can do.

And like said above. Fredi doesnt tell a player to lean in on pitches. They either do it themselves or they dont. Anyways... what is leaning in on a pitch? Nothing. It's the loweest way to get on base. The pitcher PUTS YOU ON. Getting no-hit is just as bad as getting perfect-gamed in my eyes if the no-hitter is from a beaned batter or error. If it's a BB that's different.

I dont know why at that point any of those players were trying to draw walks. They should've been fouling off pitches left and right to their best abilities because they should've known Halladay was on tonight by the oh... 5th inning. They should've known to be swinging. What the hell is a walk gonna do? Do you think he's gonna walk more than 1 anyways? We needed hits and the fact that 6 batters stared at strike 3 all hoping for a ball on extremely borderline pitches is foolish.

A walk simply makes him work from the stretch, which I'm guessing is Benched's point. Either way, the coaches don't deserve blame for this.

You can't assume the game would have unfolded in the same way if Maybin had made that catch, but I think it is legitimate to at least acknowledge that the Marlins could have won this game if the Phillies had not scored the run.

Halladay could have had a perfect nine innings, but the game might have gone into extras. Considering that Halladay's pitch count was getting high, I doubt Manuel would have sent Halladay out for more than 10 innings, even if the perfect game were still intact.

However, I think all we need to take away from this is that the line-up needs a serious structure. It also seems like Maybin needs work on his fielding. A Maybin demotion and a Stanton call-up by Friday seems like a wise idea to me.

Crazy as it seems, I'd feel better about a Cogs demotion. I just don't think a demotion will make Maybin better at all, he's probably always gonna be bad. But we need more from Coghlan than just the one hit every couple of nights, and I think he can do a lot better with some minor league refreshment.

In any case, not calling up Stanton in the very near future is inexcusable.

How about Halladay was just awesome. Literally. The Marlins have some issues, and I'm shocked it's the offense and not the pitching, but today was about Halladay. Not the Marlins.

2 games under end of May is not a big deal. If they play .500 ball for two months and then rattle off 8 of 10 at some point in August, that team is in heavy contention.

It's a long season. And there is a lot of hope with Stanton and improvements from the other guys in the lineup and bullpen. Get back to me on July 25th about doom and gloom and if we need to trade off assets or go for it. As of now, it is what it is.

Also...if Maybin makes that catch, Josh Johnson is able to pitch at least another inning. That missed routine catch caused JJ to throw an extra 15 pitches or so. Bottom line is, the catch was routine and should've been made. Fully agree with the demotion/callup, although I wouldn't mind if Coghlan got the demotion, either, at this point.

It's probably rushing him, but you're right regardless. This team needs a shake up, and especially with interleague coming up, they need another bat in the lineup.

well, I'm personally absolutely sick to my stomach.

Is this the only 1-0 perfect game in history to be decided by an unearned run?

I'm trying not to be reactionary so I won't say who I think should be sent down, called up, or whatever~

Actually, surprisingly enough, not at all.

There have been 5 perfect games that were 1-0. 4 of them were decided by an unearned run.

Maybe it's time to finally start giving BC some starts.

This. I'd have him in vs LHP, at least.

This was tough to watch in person. I couldn't bring myself to cheer or applaud, although it's settled in just how unbelievably good he was tonight (and is in general). Halladay's just special, guys.

Yeah. He cost us that game. Because pitching was on. Offense was on.

tonight offense was off. 100% off. As off as it gets.

100% of the time if you dont score you dont win. 100% of the time if you dont score and the other team doesnt score you dont win. Yes, the Marlins would have had more opportunities later in the game... but you NEVER rely on extra innings in any sport. If you cant score in regulation for any game you dont deserve to win. If the other team didnt score either you've been given a gift defensively (and in baseball's case, pitching).

To say the least if the Marlins would have at least gotten on base 5 or so times I could see a legitimate argument of Maybin being responsible. But even then... I just cant come to blame a single player when 11 of them failed to get on base.

Maybe it's time to finally start giving BC some starts.

Seriously, he was just amazing. I think it hit me around the 5th inning just how difficulty it was going to be to get a hit off him. I mean, I still think we actually drew a couple walks off him where the call didn't go our way, but he basically earned that strikezone with just how untouchable he was.

This team sucks. With that said, this is the first time I've watched my team get no hit or worse, and I'm amazed that it wasn't as painful as I would have imagined.

Living in Phillies country, believe me it's f-ing painful.... my so-called classless Phillies fans friends kept calling me all night

Thanks for giving away 2 games, Maybin. Dumbass.

When Stanton comes up, I'd rather see Maybin go to AAA and learn how to field his position

All I have to say is this....

As a Marlins Fan, this game sucks.

As a baseball fan, this game rocked.

As a Roy Halladay Fan, this game was unbelievable.

As a South Florida Resident, the crowd was dishonorable. I couldn't believe the BS I heard later into the game from our own fans. It almost made the Phillies Fans seem tame, almost.

I'm glad I went, and I'm glad I have a scorecard and ticket stub and pictures to make into a nice frame/photo collage.

Too bad it wasn't JJ vs. Halladay going into the 10th thanks to Maybin.

This is the kind of thing I feared when I heard the Phillies had traded for Roy Halladay.

Congrats to him, but I honestly can't say I'm happy about the situation.

I hope Roy Halladay is the kind of player we can go out and sign when the new stadium opens

I think you're missing the point. Yeah, in 9 innings we couldn't get on base, but what if we had a 10th inning? An 11th? What if the top of our lineup, including our superstar, had another shot. We would have had that shot if not for Maybin. Maybe they still don't get a hit in the 10th and maybe then Phils get a run, but who knows?

We live by the sword and we die by the sword, we have a offense to hit home runs, we cannot scratch out single runs, Maybin come tomorrow and hit a home run and we win, everyone will be saying he is a beast

If we were the Toronto Blue Jays, I'd agree with the bold-face part.... sometimes this all-or-nothing offense is so damned frustrating

Yes, you're right. This is what I was trying to say earlier.

One would have expected that a Halladay vs. Johnson match-up would be a low scoring game. This means that you can't make defensive errors like Maybin did tonight (and the previous night - he's been a little leaguer in CF lately).

An error that leads to a run in a game in which Halladay is pitching is a big deal. Rich even said this right after Maybin's error. He said something like "Halladay has one run and that's deadly."
