Posted June 29, 201014 yr So all this hype about the kid has definitely gotten to an all time high, many have already claimed that Steven Strasburg deserves to be on the NL All Star Team this season. To me a kid who's only pitched 5 total games ,and hasn't even passed the 7th inning, can't be automatically claimed as a player on an All Star team he has to earn it and 5 games doesn't cut it. If he keeps on dominating for his next 3 possibly 4 starts until the game then maybe he can be on the team but right now guys like Carpenter, Ubaldo, Wainwright, J.J., Pelfrey and Garland/Latos should have spots as starting pitchers. I understand he could be the best pitcher in the league for many years to come but thats the future and you can't reward him for things he hasn't accomplished yet. Maybe I'm right, Maybe I 'm wrong but I thats how I feel. What do you guys think?
June 29, 201014 yr Dont care how good you are, you cant enter the season that late and be called an all star. Gotta either have proof that you really are that good from previous seasons or play the same general amount of games as your competition.
June 29, 201014 yr I'm giving it a no, as well. Would be unfair to the others who actually deserve it.
June 29, 201014 yr The NL is pretty stacked in pitching this year. It would be unfair if a Jaime Garcia, Josh Johnson, Tim Hudson, or Heath Bell misses the All-Star Game because of him

He's the last pitcher who's going to miss the game.

He's the last pitcher who's going to miss the game. Unless he lined up to pitch the final game before the AS break. All starters who pitch in the game before the AS break are ineligible. i just don't know if they still get to go even if they wont play.
June 29, 201014 yr I don't think so. He's been pretty good, but he hasn't been filthy enough to warrant being an all-star after 7 starts or so. I think he would need an ERA around or under 1.00 to be a real contender. I didn't watch his performance tonight but from the highlights I saw, he didn't look too spectacular even before the 7th inning. There's a chance he still goes, however. MLB loves stuff they can grandstand. With Heyward not playing, I could see MLB pressure Charlie to give Strasburg a roster spot.

Every year there is like an entire team's worth of players who don't play because of injuries or things like that. Those who deserve to be there get to be there whether or not they are actually playing. And a lot of the guys actually playing don't deserve to be there because they were only brought in after the eight thousand guys ahead of them couldn't play.
June 29, 201014 yr If the game determines home field advantage in the World Series, whether you agree with it or not, why are we worried about hurting peoples feelings? Truth is, Strasburg is filthy and he has the ability to dominate hitters. So he doesn't have many innings, who cares? He's still got better stuff than most pitchers in the league. If I'm Charlie Manuel, I want him on my team.
June 29, 201014 yr No to being an All-Star this year. And I would love us to DESTROY Strasburg when we first face him

If I'm Charlie Manuel, I want him on my team. ... so... you'd rather have the kid who has not proven himself over 4 starters (Jimenez, Johnson, Halladay, Garcia) who actually have lower ERAs, in over double the games pitched? (with the exception of Halladay, who is 0.02 ERA behind Strasburg. With a perfect game, might I add) I dont get that... even statistically he's not worthy to this point. He might be a strikeout champ but dont forget he's letting runs come in on (still a great pace) less than his strikeouts indicate.
June 29, 201014 yr I agree with the good doctor, not nearly enough IP to be an all-star. I bet he'll have more innings than the relievers that make the team. If he keeps pitching the way he has he'll probably deserve it.

If I'm Charlie Manuel, I want him on my team. There's probably 6 NL starters who have been just as good as Strasburg has been, but in more starts. Strasburg has been great, but he isn't much better (or any better) than Jimenez, Johnson, Halladay, Hudson, or Gallardo have been. This has been a great year for NL pitching in general. Of course, there will also be a handful of closers or relief pitchers on the roster too. I would expect Manuel using them from the 6th inning or so onward. He'll probably stick to 2-3 starters, to minimalize the number of starters having their schedules screwed up.

While I don't think he's an all-star at this point, I will point out that D-Train made his debut toward mid-May of 2003 and was named to the All-Star team so its not without precedent.

June 30, 201014 yr If we're going into the game looking to win it, then he should at least be considered - but if we're playing the most deserving players out there, then hell no. I sort of want to win the All Star Game this year though, so I wouldn't mind him pitching an inning but I can recognize that it'd be an injustice to all the other players on the team.

So... from what you are suggesting... Strasburg is better than someone listed above...? As in... if someone else is allowed to play it'll be because Strasburg simply didnt play enough... but Strasburg would actually play better than them? I'm sorry but we've seen Strasburg! He doesnt even have the numbers to back up being better than the other guys... what makes you think he'd be better than them? Even if you double Strasburg's statistics and qualify him as a starting pitcher, his numbers still are not ahead of those names listed above. So why would Strasburg help that team win anymore than them?

D-Train actually came in at the beginning of May, he made 5 starts that month, so he went into that with double the starts Strasburg will have made going into the rosters being set.

But he's not ahead of any of those players on the list. He's merely behind or on their pace. And that's imagining his numbers DONT come back down to earth. Just wait... they will.

Not sure why you'd say that. As good as his numbers are, his peripherals actually suggest that his ERA should be even lower, right now. He's not Jaime Garcia; he's legit. The only reason I don't think he should be in the game is because I don't think it's fair. Not enough starts/innings for me. But he's definitely legit.
