MillerTime
Giants Step Up Pursuit Of Jorge Cantu By Tim Dierkes [July 28 at 8:25am CST] The Giants have stepped up their pursuit of Marlins corner infielder Jorge Cantu, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. They may hold an edge over the Rangers and Rockies. He says the Fish are believed to be seeking a young lefthander. The Giants have been using Travis Ishikawa at first base lately and Juan Uribe at third while Pablo Sandoval is away on personal leave. In terms of young lefties, the Giants have reliever Dan Runzler on the DL with a knee injury and starter Eric Surkamp at High A. Yesterday ESPN's Jayson Stark wrote that the Rangers and Marlins' talks for Cantu appeared hung up over dollars. The Rangers want the Marlins to assume all of the $2.22MM remaining on Cantu's contract.

Do you really think they will give us ML ready arms for Cantu??... Really??? If we a get a lefty from AA ball (dont really know SF farm system to well) I think thats a hell of a deal for someone who's really dead weight on your roster... Rabbethan
Hell no dont give us Single A guys and guys on the DL. We need Major League ready arms, period. We're not going to get any ML guy worth anything for Jorge. We don't need a guy to win now, just a guy to help us next year and in 2012.

I just dont want a repeat of what happened when we gave away Willingham for nothing. Jorge's having a horrible year but he's been our cleanup hitter for the past few seasons, we have to be able to dupe someone into giving us something of higher quality than Single A. I Love Me Some Fish
If Beinfest can find a way to snatch Runzler in a deal for Cantu (and maybe another prospect) then damn....just being hopeful though

We're not going to get any ML guy worth anything for Jorge. We don't need a guy to win now, just a guy to help us next year and in 2012. Exactly this. With the bullpen we have now and some rookies who are breaking into the league I'd say our shots to make the playoffs are anywhere from 5 to 15 %. If we get a AA arm who has an ETA of 2011 or 2012 it would be great! He can be added to the list of guys who will be up by 2011-2012 like Ceda, Marinez and hopefully Tucker and Miller make strides back to becoming useful MLB pitchers. (I still have Very High hopes for Miller) Right now the best option is to try to build for the future and its a future that unfortunately doesn't involve Jorge Cantu. He's had 4 solid seasons and 2 great seasons as the cleanup hitter but it came down to him being dead weight in the field and incoming prospects who can replace the offensive numbers he has put up. Seriously, either one would be nice.

MrMarlinPride
What do they have to offer? Anything?? They have the 8th rated Farm System in 2010 which is filled with pitching prospects who are C to C+'s.

We need him to produce to up his trade value and to help us win one of these games.

A split in SF does absolutely nothing, but confuse the front office some more. 8.5 back of the wildcard if we lose both games = time to sell. Which is what they should do, anyway. Cantu needs to go, and they might as well make Cody Ross available, and see what they can get for him, as well.

I won't necessarily be routing against our team but either way if we don't beat the Giants at least 3 games this series they should be able to realize that the season is pretty much over and we need to deal Cantu and possibly Helms while we can for players that could help us in the future. While I realize that this is probably the best thing for the team, I don't want it to happen. I always hope the fish can do well enough to merit some sort of national attention, and being out of contention sort of takes you out of the spotlight. But hey, if we get some good pieces, maybe we can finally get the recognition the team deserves for being pretty decent these past few years. If by National Attention you mean ESPN then good luck with that, Sportscenter broadcasters have nothing better to do but insult our poor attendance, but Baseball Tonight doesn't do to bad in always complementing the fish on there every year low budget contenders and the solid talent we have to be big contenders in the future but that's pretty much it besides the complimenting of J.J., Hanley and Uggla. I really wish the Baseball Network was free on cable... But it's important to trade Cantu because we could be able to get some decent pitching prospects from a talented farm systems like Colorado, San Fransisco and Texas and hopefully whoever we get for Cantu if we trade him can be put to good use and perform well. Oh, I'm more than aware. It's downright insulting, really, and it always happens in some sort of passing moment. As far as Cantu is concerned, I'd be more than okay letting him go. I'm just not personally okay "forfeiting" this season, especially with the born again braves fan living with me.

Bret Hart
9:11pm: The Rockies are out on Cantu, according to Rosenthal (via Twitter). 3:49pm: The Giants are "not heavily considering" Cantu, a source told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link). The Rockies are still looking at Cantu, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link). (from. mlbtraderumors. com) It's not good.
