August 20, 201016 yr With a lot of those guys, the few points you sacrifice off of Paulino's OPS you get back in defense and baserunning speed seeing as how Paulino is one of the slowest guys in the league. He's lucky he hits lefties like he does because if he didn't, he'd be virtually useless. And I know we're not getting Martinez. I just wanted the list to be complete. I hadn't checked, but as has been said, not all of those guys are free agents. The guys who are, are unrealistic options. Also, Paulino isn't a bad defensive catcher.

Can you please tell me how they can just pick up a pill without saying "hmm maybe I should ask my doctor if it's ok for me to take this while I'm playing?" What's with all these guys saying "Oh wow I didn't realize what I was taking had something banned in it until recently. Whatever. It's a dietary pill, though. Sometimes I question what should and shouldn't be banned from sports. Maybe we all believe these guys are robots or something? I don't think it's right to take something like steroids or something that would make the guy play better than the rest because that is cheating, but the question is how much does whatever he was taking really affect his game play anyway? Sucks though and very surprising news. It's obvious Ronny knew what he was taking. Baseball players always try to cover their asses by saying they "unknowingly took illegal substances," but they know damn well what they're taking. It's pretty safe to say those dietary pills didn't give him amazing power or anything like that. I'd like to see what the substance is and why it is banned. Well I agree, I'd like to know what it was also because *if* it was a dietary pill, I'd like to know what could possibly be in a dietary pill that would make him better than other players to the point where you'd want it banned. I mean, why else ban a substance? Not all banned substances are performing enhancing. It seems that MLB doesn't disclose what they found, so I guess we won't ever know what it was unless we compare the dietary pills to the list of banned substances.

Shoppach isn't, he's got a club option for next year. I rather have Paulino than Buck, V-Mart is way over Paulino and will be way higher paid, Kendall will probably still want to be a starter if he doesn't outright retire. EDIT: And it looks like Kendall isn't an FA either.

I completely agree that for where we will be next year with our catching situation, Paulino is a great platoon partner for Baker. My point was just that he's not the only guy that could do that job.

August 21, 201016 yr ~.900 .OPS production is never "verrrrry replaceable." If you look at the list you posted, some of the guys are out of the team's price range (VMart, Buck), some guys aren't even free agents (already mentioned), and some guys aren't even good at all (Marson, Cervelli). This is like saying that Dan Uggla is "verrrry replaceable" because Chase Utley, Robinson Cano, etc. are productive 2B.
August 21, 201016 yr Did they ever announce what supplements he was takingor what the banned substance was? I'm guessing this wasn't some sort of amphetamine (as someone said earlier). My educated guess is that he took something that contained a diuretic (probably bumetanide), which induces a urination rate higher than normal. This then increases the possibility of a negative test if steroids were in his system. While we don't know the whole story (or a diuretic was even the banned substance), but if this proves to be the case I don't think people should so quickly assume that Paulino wasn't consciously doing wrong here. He could have been taking the supplement just to mask real steroid usage.

He was either rehabbing or on the DL when he was caught, and since he'd been gone for a while (and wasn't in the majors that long) it didn't seem like a real Marlin getting caught. I really don't know what to say about this. I'm disappointed that it happened, it doesn't make me hate Paulino and I do wonder if his over-use might have caused him to seek some "help" or if what he claims is true. Either way, we may never know the truth. I am actually a bit excited that we'll get to see the young guys play.

August 21, 201016 yr "We are horrifically embarrassed," #Marlins president David Samson on Ronny Paulino's 50-game ban. Maybe Paulino won't be back next season..... Samson really has no say in that. Remember the Scotty arrest and Samson's comments following that? Yea, Scotty was traded at a later date but I have already given the reasons for that in another thread. Beinfest also looked and sounded ticked off. That's not good. I really thought Baker would be traded this off season as an upgrade to the defense. This could change that.

But he has a luxury the rest of us don't, Team doctors and trainers that could have checked this out and informed him. Not to mention the education all players get coming through all the systems. Paulino appears to be the first (at least post Mitchell Report, I cant speak for previous to that because I dont know). And @ Benched, while the Marlins might have a lower rate, even significantly lower, of players using PEDs from some other teams, I still wouldnt put it past them to have at least one or two people taking them on any given season. I doubt there is one fully clean team in this league.
