2010 Postseason thread

Wow, 10 straight postseason losses for the Twins. Some might say it's just bad luck. But I think it's pretty clear; for years they have had what it takes to win a mediocre AL Central division over the course of 162 games, but never enough to match up against teams like the Yankees in a short postseason series.

It's inevitably a bit of both, I think. Even an inferior team can typically have a ~35-45% "chance" of winning, so 10 straight losses is probably due to both randomness/bad luck + possible roster inferiority AKA just not being as good.

They just can't deal with someone as CLUTCH as A-Rod was last year, right?

That's what you're saying?

Back in like 05-06 he choked sooooo bad in the playoffs. I'll give credit where it's due, he did come up big last year. But I still despise him.

The record supports that, by the way.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010, they mostly clobbered the teams in the Central, yet they have not won a single season series against NYY, BOS, or TB. In fact, they've lost every season series vs. NYY and BOS from 2008-2010.

I just noticed that the Marlins are +6, +3, and +2 in run differential the last 3 years. That's so bleeping average :thumbdown

Get this: they haven't won a game in the Bronx since July 4th, 2007.

2007!

This series is pretty much over.

I was just thinking this morning; I could easily be a Phillies fan  My Dad grew up rooting for the Phils but brought me up the right way, a Marlin fan :D

Something I feel should be brought up:

As we all know last year there were some horrendous calls in the playoffs, notably the Mauer ball down the left field line in New York. I really hope the Umps do a better job this year, but after one day of games there has already been at least one blown call, the second-to-last play of the game last night; Delmon Young hit a liner to right where they said Greg Golson trapped it when he clearly caught it.

When was the last time a team had a 1-3 as immense as the Phillies currently do with Halladay-Hamels-Oswalt?

Carpenter-Wainwright-Jaime Garcia?

Cain-Lincecum-Sanchez-Bumgarner (All below 3.5 ERA)?

Certainly Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz

I'd just like to say that Mariano Rivera is amazing. Easily my favorite pitcher in baseball.

I'm kinda gettin' a kick out of a closer being your favorite pitcher in baseball.

I'd like to see it go down with Tampa over Texas, Twins over New York, Reds over Phillies, and Giants over Phillies. But since every single one of the teams I wanted to see win yesterday lost and it just feels like that trend will continue, this is how it will go down -

Rangers beat the Rays 3-1

Yankees sweep the Twins 3-0

Yankees beat the Rangers 4-2

Phillies sweep the Reds 3-0

Braves beat the Giants 3-2

Phillies beat the Braves 4-1

Yankees beat the Phillies 4-3

Easily more than Halladay?

I said "easily my favorite," not "easily the best."

He's not my favorite pitcher in baseball because he gets saves, so I don't why you're getting a kick out of it.

There are closers, and then there's Mariano Rivera. He's in a separate class. It's amazing how good he's been, and what separates him from these other closers is his consistency, postseason success, and the way he gets these saves in the postseason. Those are legit saves.

To do what he's doing at the age of 40+ is incredible. To do what he's done his whole career with basically ONE PITCH is INCREDIBLE.

And better yet, unlike all these younger closers who aren't half as good as him, Mariano doesn't celebrate like an idiot after getting 3+ outs. He goes in, throws his cutter, makes hitters look foolish, gets the save, shakes his catcher's hand, and that's it.

Couple this with the fact yesterdays Rays game was sold out (albeit it was a playoff game) and this should put to rest that Rays "have no fans".

I don't think anyone said they had no fans, they've been saying they didn't have enough fans who show up, and a playoff game doesn't prove anything.

This is coming from me whose team did nothing but set attendance records in the playoffs but has a sh*tty fanbase.

Tampa just got screwed on a check swing call. Looks like Young went around but 1st base ump called it a non swing. Following pitch, Young hits a 3-run home run. Sucks for the Rays.

Classic baseball there. Ump blows the call (though that's probably the most misunderstood call in baseball, it was closer than most people would believe) and pow, ball goes far.

Well, unless if a really good pitcher is on the mound.

For example, Mariano Rivera>>>James Shields. (umps missed a big call last night in the 9th inning of the Yankees game)

Anyway, I'm sure this game probably is the end of the James Shields era in TB.

Id love Shields for the Marlins but i thought it was stupid to start him over garza. shields has been horrible the last month and this game was a must win for them. go with the better guy.

i guess this will be it for tampas run for the time being if/when they get bounced. dont think they will have the horses to compete with boston or new york after this season but they did make a nice run of it. id feel more sympathy for their fans even if i could ever figure why tampa fans seem to hold a grudge on SoFla teams.

and whats the status of them and a new stadium? if i remember correctly they were supposed to get funding from the state legislature awhile back.

Sigh

I know what you said. I'm asking if you like Rivera [easily] a lot more than Halladay? I personally think Halladay is right there as far as favorite pitchers as concerned (at least for me), even though Mo is awesome, and has been forever.

I kinda do, simply because I find it amazing that with Mariano, a hitter already knows what's coming, but the one pitch is so well-located that it's still nearly untouchable. And it has been that way for about 2 decades now.

Halladay is awesome too though, of course.
