Marlins "Leaning Toward" Retaining Edwin Rodriguez

The Marlins "are leaning toward" keeping current manager Edwin Rodriguez at least through 2011, tweets The Palm Beach Post's Joe Capozzi, passing on information from Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Rodriguez took over as Florida's interim manager on June 23 and led the team to an even 46-46 mark over the remainder of the 2010 season after Fredi Gonzalez was fired.

 

If the Fish did bring back Rodriguez, it would bring a sudden end to a managerial search that, in the words of the Miami Herald's Clark Spencer, has been "like watching a glacier melt." Bo Porter, Jim Fregosi and Bobby Valentine were a few of the names mentioned in connection with the Florida job, but the consensus was that the Marlins would still bring in a few more candidates for interviews after the World Series.

 

In a meeting with media on Tuesday, Marlins president David Samson told reporters (including MLB.com's Joe Frisaro) that team management was still having "internal conversations" about the direction of the manager search. Samson made these comments while taking media members on a tour of the club's new stadium, which is in itself might be the reason why Florida hasn't yet agreed on a manager for 2011 or made movement on long-term deals for Dan Uggla or Ricky Nolasco.

 

"Everything takes a little longer right now because our allocation of time," Samson said. "So when [owner Jeffrey Loria] and I speak, it's 85 percent construction and ballpark related."

 

"There are decisions on the ballpark that have to get done....Construction doesn't wait for anyone. It's deciding what needs to be done. So in a priority battle, when we talk about players or the ballpark, the ballpark wins every time."

 

It seems odd to think that a manager could be hired simply as a time-saver, but if Marlins officials are really devoting their focus to the stadium's completition this winter, it would be an easy solution to just retain a familiar and comfortable face in Rodriguez. If he or the team struggles next season, then Florida could always let him go and bring in a big-name manager to grace the opening of their new ballpark in 2012.

Not my first choice, although I don't really like any of the Marlins' remaining choices now that Bobby V is gone...

There's not a lot of manager candidates that excite me, and Edwin did fine this year. He's a guy I can really root for as well.

Hmmmm, sounds like the stadium is more of a priority than the team. Its what I have thought all along, they could care less about the product on the field, its all about selling tickets for 2012. No foresight about 2013, or 2014, etc....

I'm not usually one who cares too much about managers, but for some reason I just don't like Edwin. I don't really like his personality. He just seems kind of bland. It wouldn't be the end of the world if they brought him back, but I admit I'll be somewhat disappointed if they do.

I had a chance to meet him. From my experience he's not bland at all, he's got a great personality and really knows the game well.

Edwin, he's already got a built in "win" in his name. How could you say no to that?

 

 

In all seriousness, I got a good feeling from Edwin last year. The major issue with Fredi was his bullpen management. I feel Edwin did a good job in picking and choosing the guys to come out of the bullpen. He has a fire that Fredi lacked, and seems to be very passionate about the game and about the team he is coaching (now the Marlins). I think Edwin is right now the best choice for the job, and personally I feel there's a chance Edwin can become manager past 2011.

In a way I feel that Freddi used us. He knew he'd be the next man in Atlanta, and like fools we just gave him his 3½ years of experience. Our next hire has to be someone committed to be the Marlins manager longterm, not a Freddi or Girardi who have their eyes and hearts elsewhere.

I don't understand it, either.

The guy finished with a .500 record despite having to manage an AAAA pitching staff in September.

 

On the field this year, I thought he did the best he could with what he had to work with, and off the field the players seem to like him. To be honest, in terms of the candidates left, if the team doesn't want Tony Pena then I consider Edwin to be the next best guy for the team. I wouldn't mind keeping him another year, and beyond that if he succeeds.

I find myself questioning a lot of his in game decisions, more the subs, depth linups, PH, and the fact that he seems to stick with his AAA guys a bit too much, but he's as good as the guys on the list, maybe shy of Ryne and Tony Peña.
