November 13, 201015 yr With Maybin now gone and getting 2 players to fix our biggest need, what else do we need? I think we need 1-2 lefty situational guys for the pen, a guy with pop off the bench, and then possibly a lefty back end of the rotation guy and we have a really great team next year. You?
November 13, 201015 yr We still have holes at one outfield spot, catcher, and a bullpen lefty. And we don't have a legit closer, our 2B/3B situation is somewhat in flux, and our rotation is nothing special. There's still plenty of work that could be done with this team.

Longterm, they need a 2/3 lefty starter, a young catcher who can play now, and a young center fielder that can play now Shortterm, they need someone to play opposite of Coghlan until Dominguez is ready, they need another lefty reliever, and they need a very strong veteran 4th outfielder for the bench. This is a lot of needs. Thankfully, we have Uggla and Nunez to trade, and at least $10 million to spend so they have options.
November 13, 201015 yr Author I really think cousins is more than capable of subbing in at cf for this year. a little bit of pop, speed, and by all accounts is the best outfielder we have in the organization defensively. Not gonna get better defensively like we ask for every year if we dont sacrifice a little bit of offense, or in maybins case, sacrifice no offense for a little bit of defense.

I wouldn't mind him starting if we somehow acquired a good defensive catcher with pop in his bat or at-least a good defensive catcher with hits a little and resigning Uggla.
November 14, 201015 yr If Uggla signs I think we'll see Cousins/Boni in CF but filling the other gaps is going to be tough without more trades. There's been a lot of talk about trading Gaby but I'm wondering whether they wouldn't shop around Coghlan too. Any thoughts?
November 14, 201015 yr Trading Coghlan makes very little sense. He's a guy who can play left field, third base, or second base. Right now he's the leading candidate to play third.

I think there are at least 7 spots on the 25 roster going to people not currently in the organization so it matters little of thinking about what to do right now. A lot of player movement is coming. This is just the first step. I expect multiple trades, dfas, signings, and other acquisitions, like the rule5. This party is just starting.

Maybe it's not what you mean, but it sounds like you're saying we need a right-handed bat who can play 3B. 1. Coghlan can hit lefties. 2. We have the 1 million dollar man on the bench. The only thing he does well is hit lefties.
November 14, 201015 yr I think he expects Uggla to be traded, so he's saying we need someone to play opposite of Coghlan from second base. I'm not sure, but that's how I took it.

He said "until Dominguez is ready." I'm assuming he thinks Coghlan will start the year at 3B, and we need someone to platoon with him.

November 14, 201015 yr 1. Lefty Relievers who has a good numbers against lefthanded hitters. 2. Definite Closer 3. Lefty Pinch-hitter as a 3B or 1B 4. Good defensive Catcher
November 14, 201015 yr 1. Lefty Relievers who has a good numbers against lefthanded hitters. 2. Definite Closer 3. Lefty Pinch-hitter as a 3B or 1B 4. Good defensive Catcher 1. Absolutely 2. Probably not a necessity; really, there are very few "definite closers," and none of them are available. Beinfest will try to find cost-efficient arms in different ways, as he usually does. He's already proven it this offseason. He's not the type to spend big on a bullpen, and with the payroll the way it is, it's difficult to blame him. 3. Doesn't necessarily have to play those positions; we do need a left-handed hitter off the bench to compliment Helms, though. 4. Yeah, I guess. I'd still like to know what the deal is with Baker. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like those free agent catchers, so if we're not trading for a catcher, I don't want a new catcher here. Baker/Paulino platoon has always been productive, offensively, when healthy. They might not be super awesome defensively, but as long as we're getting production from them (specifically at their price), I'm still fine with the platoon. (assuming Baker can be healthy by Opening Day/can still catch, which I guess could be the problem considering he had Tommy John surgery) Even if Baker can't catch, he can still be the lefty pinch-hitter off the bench. It'll be interesting to see what they do with him.

The only thing he does well is hit lefties. I don't know where you got a rhp/lhp thing, but it doesn't matter where Coghlan plays in the immediacy, it just is going to be 2B/3B. When Dominguez is ready, it's obvious where everyone goes. So, until Dominguez is ready (or the arbitration deadline passes), the Marlins need someone to play the opposite of 2B/3B from Coghlan. And yes, I am working under the assumption Uggla is dead man walking. Marlins are not going to keep him after his insult of turning down forty eight million dollars. As for current options, there is Bonifacio, O. Martinez, and I guess Helms.... I think they can do better than that in free agency and keep them on the bench and AAA respectfully. Basically, they need a stopgap starter at 2B/3B. Nothing ground breaking here.
November 14, 201015 yr Definately need a lefty for the rotation. A #2 if possible, but a solid #3 would be acceptable also. Too many big lefty bats in our division to go another season without a good lefty starter.
November 14, 201015 yr Author If we can find a way to get jonathan sanchez i think that would be the perfect fit. as long as volstad isnt in the rotation i am fine. we definitely need a mid rotation lefty though. Either way i think next year we will be really good with the combination of the improved bullpen, healthy guys, continued improvement of the young guys in the lineup, and another full year for jj, nolasco, and anibal.

Barring injury, he will be. Especially how he finished off last season.

As for me, I haven't given up on Volstad yet. He finished strong last year, and last year overall was still an improvement from the year before (right?)
November 14, 201015 yr We need a OF, 3B, C, CL, and depending on how you look at it a SP who can consistantly remain a quality 2. Other then that, were as good as the Giants!!!

We have a closer, Clay Hensley. 3rd Baseman possibly in Dominguez. What we really need is a CF, a catcher and another good left lefty pitcher.
