Posted June 15, 201113 yr In view of all the knee-jerk doom and gloom due to recent losses, I have to point out what is at stake. Loria has a franchise worth $300+ million, a new stadium about to open and is on a mission to sell tickets. Going well, so far, but I'd venture to guess that it's slowed down in the last couple of weeks. So, what are you going to do? Cut and run on this season and dump salary? Of course not. Other than Nunez, there's nothing much to dump. Granted, we now have to play a hair more than .600 ball from here on out to win the 91 games that will probably win the wild card. But, that's still possible. So, they're already at a do-or-die point and the FO phones are probably very busy. With new revenue sources coming on-line next year, big moves can once again be justified. It's almost a necessity. Loria only has between now and next April to convince everyone that he's serious and pack the new joint. There's a fair chance of big, unexpected stuff happening, and soon, even though we're still far from the non-waiver trade deadline. If nothing happens and they don't contend, it's gonna be much more expensive to make a big enough splash in the off-season. If all comes to naught, maybe they can at least finally justify releasing the useless Helms. Please take a coaching job, Auntie Wes! :lol
June 15, 201113 yr 1. Knee jerk gloom and doom? Why is it a mortal sin to some people to be the slightest bit negative, let alone what is a NORMAL reaction to what happening with the Marlins right now? Some of you must be perpetually high on weed. I saw this coming(though I expected it to be much more gradual). I knew they were overachieving. Part of me hoped they would keep it up but part of me was waiting for the other shoe to to drop. So I would say that I'm not gloom and doom at all since it would imply that I didn't expect this if I was. Though I didn't expect it this bad and this fast. 2. I never wanna hear again that 162 games is a long season since this current stretch has realistically killed the season. Unless you actually think the Marlins will play .600 ball from here on out. Is anyone seeing any parallels to the Marlins crash and the 2008 stock market crash? Everything was awesome right before both. Would the new stadium opening be the equivalent of the federal reserve manipulating the stock market to make us believe the economy was recovering? People will be so in love with the new stadium, the won't care if the Marlins suck?
June 15, 201113 yr This isn't Loria's fault. This isn't even Beinfest fault. It's not John Mallee's fault, either. This is on the players. These players who are now playing like they don't give a sh*t (or so it seems) are better than this. This team should not be a borderline last place team. They are now underachieving and they should be ashamed of themselves. This is the same lineup that guys like Peter Gammons were talking about as being one of the best lineups in baseball earlier in the year. If you want to place blame on someone, start with the all talk-no walk superstar shortstop this year. When your best player has a -0.1 WAR now 67 games into the season, any team would underachieve. That was all fine and dandy when Greg Dobbs was hitting .400, but flukes don't last forever. The only thing Hanley Ramirez has done well this year is run the bases at an above average pace. He's been a negative as a hitter and a negative at SS, as usual. Not even Perry Hill can fix him. Instead of telling the media that he's going to hit .290 and hit 7 HR's by May 30th, he should consider shutting the f*** up and just start playing baseball. Being a douche is cool when you're producing, but referring to yourself in third-person becomes tiresome when you've sucked ass all year.
June 15, 201113 yr Author Some of you must be perpetually high on weed. Hey, dude, like, it's so far out, man, like, uh, hey, uh, like I forgot what I was talking about, like, you know, man? Some of the younger posters here may not appreciate the fact that I was a college freshman in 1969-70 and had first-hand experience with "hippies" and the like. And weed and the like. Great fun. Hippie chicks were, well, really, uh, well, what can I say. Ah, how about gullible? No, make that easily influenced. That's it. And lots of stupid. Yeah. And great fun. They still are to this day, except that they don't call themselves hippies anymore. Some things never change. :lol Is anyone seeing any parallels to the Marlins crash and the 2008 stock market crash? No. At least no one in their right mind. You also need to gain a little actual knowledge as to exactly how the Fed operates. I guess no one wants to speculate as to whether Loria has big balls or not, considering what he has at stake. And whether or not he wants to reserve any big moves to the off-season or make them imminently.
June 15, 201113 yr Exactly what Erick said. In short, who would've assumed Chris Volstad would've gone from mediocrity to absolute suck? Who would've assumed that Hanley Ramirez would go from all-star SS to the biggest failure in the league? etc. etc. All on the players.
June 15, 201113 yr this hitting marketing department hard trying sell season pack for new ballpark and for rest of this season
June 16, 201113 yr can they play 600 ball with javy and volstad in the rotation>......or does volstad get the hermeida. we cant release him because of his upside award for 2011.....new stadium coming....time for accountability.....

June 16, 201113 yr I would sign Cantu for the bench. An uglier Wes Helms that can also play 2nd. Then I would give Wes a job washing Hanley's car.

Being a douche is cool when you're producing, but referring to yourself in third-person becomes tiresome when you've sucked ass all year. Bravo. The only defense I have of the lineup is that they are still young, 3rd youngest team in baseball, and the hard knocks are going to come. I don't want to talk about Hanley I agree with everything you have posted, pretty much exact dead on. I think the more alarming situation is the pitching. Baseball starts and ends with pitching, which is where we lack depth, and it looks like lack very much of a future, for the next few years at least. Not to mention with our farm system ranked near dead last it's scarier to think what some of the next few years may hold if we aren't able to get at least an average 4 or 5 starter, in a trade or out of the few prospects we have.
June 16, 201113 yr If the Marlins don't make the playoffs in 2012, I and others will be pissed. Team should be playoff ready and if the team get...oh f*** it, this ain't even a .500 team.

Yeah, I expected this team this season to be damn near playoff ready for 2012 and then fix (tweak) any problems with trades and free agency, but the way this team looks, it will need a bit of overhauling to be ready for next year
June 16, 201113 yr Might seem like an irrelevant move but if I was Loria, I would ban all players from using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook etc (even though I love LoMo's tweets). My (soccer) team Rangers did just that halfway through the season after a poor few games and a loss to our biggest rivals to get the players 100% focused on their performance until the end of the season. It worked as Rangers won 2 trophies.
June 16, 201113 yr its going to be interesting to see how loria will react going into a ball park coming off a relatively underachieving season this year

June 16, 201113 yr Anyone got a complete list of free agents for this coming offseason? Curious myself. I wonder if this team goes crazy on the market like it did going into '97
June 16, 201113 yr Anyone got a complete list of free agents for this coming offseason? Curious myself. I wonder if this team goes crazy on the market like it did going into '97 Cot's Contracts claims to, but they are missing Erik Bedard, at least, so I'm not sure how much to trust it.
