July 30, 201113 yr Oh boy... in the middle of a game? Can we go out and get Michael Bourn? P.S. stop with the thread titles like that!

July 30, 201113 yr Any clue on how much they gave up? I've been reading a bit and it seems like they gave up way too much for Pence.
July 30, 201113 yr That package was f***ing huge. Evidently we are going to have to consider the Astros as something other than a joke again.
July 30, 201113 yr they still won't be able to beat the giants...giants still own them mentally, and if anything, this is proof of it...
July 30, 201113 yr Pence is under contract for another 2 years, at least I think I read that. They are so good right now it's disgusting.
July 30, 201113 yr yeah this replaces the Jason Werth bat from last year and then some. Braves fans should be scurred.
July 30, 201113 yr I hope the Phillies keep pissing away their farm system in trades Yeah, because adding all-star caliber outfielders under team control is surely going to be the thing that lets us catch them while we're starting guys that nobody else even wanted on minor league deals.
July 30, 201113 yr yeah this replaces the Jason Werth bat from last year and then some. Braves fans should be scurred. Jason Werth was a much better player for the Phillies than Hunter Pence is. Hunter Pence is a good player, but he's just an .800 ops bat. Being the only viable offensive starter on the market has severely inflated people's perception of him. Not to say it was a bad trade. They gave up too much for him because he was the only good player on the Market that fit their needs, but that team's offense is really mediocre and he makes it better. But they were the easy odd on favorite to win the World Series already and this improves their odds. This team is really in no position to keep this core together for longer than a year or two, so they have to capitalize when they can. They keep punting down the road, but they've got some really bad contracts. They have to win in the next two years.
August 2, 201113 yr Bob. While I agree the Howard extension may be a "bad contract" production vs value. One of the prospects traded for pence was blocked by Howard. The pitcher the phillies gave up is one of 3-4 very good pitching prospects in A ball. The 2 ptbnl are not going to be top prospects. I'm curious to see what you mean by other "bad contracts"? Halladay and Lee's deals may out last their top caliber production by 1 season. Other than that, there's no one besides Howard locked up long term. The team has a had an ownership group not willing to spend Money, but they're all dying off and Middleton an owner who recently sold his cigar company for over a billion dollars is taking more control. He wants to be George Steinbrenner or mark Cuban. He's not afraid to buy talent. The "window" you speak of goes as far has the luxury tax ceiling.
August 3, 201113 yr Well, I fully expect Howard and Lee's contracts to reach total albatross levels with two years left, and if you're spending $50 mil on what I expect those to to be in 3 years, that's going to make it very difficult to do a lot. But you're right, beyond those two, they're not bogged down beyond the next few years. But that means that once the current crop of players is gone, they need to find guys to replace their production immediately. That's pretty tough.
August 5, 201113 yr True. But they have the financial flexibility to opperate like the sox or the yankees. They are almost to 200 consecutive sellouts. You have to pay a deposit just to get on the waiting list for partial season tickets. They have the second most households in the USA watching them nightly. Right now they are printing money. If I were you and I wanted to see the marlins on the road. I'd add cbp to the trip. There's no experience like it. Not only is the ballpark awesome. The fans show up hours before the game to tailgate or go into mcfaddens (bar attached to park). It's literally a party atmosphere every night. The owners know they've got a gold mine, as long as they pay to kepp the team competitive. It was all sparked by the new ballpark. Maybe it will happen for the marlins? I am going down the check out the park when it's done. I used to love going to the orange bowl. I think your team needs to couple a superstar with the park though. The phillies went out and got thome. Now they have personality guys that the fans can identify with. Utley jroll now pence. I dont think hanley brings that type of feeling. He's a superstar but I don't think he sends off a positive vibe
