Stanton Contract Extension Calling MarlinsLou

Featured Replies

At what point does the FO seriously have to consider signing Mike Stanton to longer term extension and buy out his arbitration years and a couple of FA years. A 21 year old hitting about 40 HR is going to be very expensive in arbitration if it gets there. He's already a 4+ win player and something like 25-30 WAR over the next 6 years is not an unreasonable estimate of his worth over the next few years in my opinion. I haven't done the math or the comparisions but Something like 6years/$50million seems like it would be ballpark figure that would work for both sides. Lou, I'm prett sure your the contract guru on the forum. Am I way off on considering signing Mike to an extension and on the number it would take to get it done?

I think they will work on it soon, but no reason to do it during the season right now and mess with his head. It would be good if they try to sign him long term in the offseason.

Justin Upton's two seasons before signing his deal. (He had 152 sub-replacement PAs in 2007)

2008 (age 20) 417 PA 15 HR .347 wOBA 103 wRC+ 0.8 WAR

2009 (age 21) 588 PA 26 HR .388 wOBA 132 wRC+ 4.8 WAR

Stanton

2010 (age 20) 396 PA 22 HR .355 wOBA 118 wRC+ 2.9 WAR

2011 (age 21) 418 PA 25 HR .370 wOBA 134 wRC+ 2.9 WAR

Obviously 2011 isn't over yet but I'd say Stanton has been slightly better overall. I agree though that Upton is a good comparison. He got 6 years/ $51.25 million so i guess my 6/50 number wasn't too far off.

But will the recent adventures with long term contracts (i.e. JJ & Ramirez) scare them off ? They can trade Stanton and replenish their farm system in one fell swoop.

You can't possibly be serious.

They can trade Stanton and replenish their farm system in one fell swoop.

And the jokes continue. They will have between 13 and 30+ million to spend next year over and above what it will take to bring back this year's team. A replenished farm system isn't on their radar for the next year and they couldn't care less about it for now.

Stanton may be the most untradeable guy in all of MLB. He'll be signed long-term in due time.

Quite possibly true. A farm team doesn't need to be replenished immediately after most of the team is relatively young and under control for 4-5 more years.

And a Stanton contract doesn't even need to be done this offseason. Let's wait until he hits arbitration and then give him a 4 or 5 year contract that buys out the remaining years of arb + a few FA years. The only problem with that would be the contract would be over by the team he is 27, normally the best year that players have. So resigning Stanton after that would be quite difficult even if our payroll is around 100MM (wishful thinking). Stanton would likely eat up nearly 1/5th of that.

Just like they did when they traded Cabrera. Burke Badenhop>Cabrera

Hahah I wish I joking. I just thought, due to their history, that Stanton may end up like Cabrera and traded for the future in a couple of years.

Well on paper that was a good trade at the time. Wasn't Miller a top pitching prospect ?

Are you living on the same planet as the rest of us?

Surely, you've heard of the new ballpark.

Well on paper that was a good trade at the time. Wasn't Miller a top pitching prospect ?The thing about prospects is you don't know how they'll pan out. We already lost one future hall of famer before the age of 30. No need to lose a possible other. No more excuses about needing a new stadium and not getting enough revenue. They pull that sh*t again and I'm done.

While there's always luck involved in signings/drafting young guys, it's pretty amazing that the Marlins, since only 1999, have been the "first to acquire' 2 different guys with the chance to be in the top 50 hitters of all-time by the end of their respective careers. That's pretty ridiculous, even if we couldn't keep Cabrera.

Im hoping they get it done during the off season. Thats some big news and momentum to go into the new park with.

I agree CanesCop, so the FO says they want to add some fans, sign Mike Stanton long term.

I think this is going to be the most exciting off season ever.

Yes I have, but a leopard doesn't change his spots. I'm not trusting this guy Loria until I see Stanton signed.

So the Hanley, JJ, Nolasco, and John Buck contracts in the last 3 years aren't enough to show he's willing to pay on long term deals?

It's makes no sense to sign a guy long term that isn't even arb eligable right now. Use the $$$ to plug some holes that puts a play off team (not a contender, an actual play off team) on the field for 2012. That team will keep the public's interest, which means keeps them coming back in 2013 and maybe beyond. More butts in the seats = more $$$ coming in = more $$$ going out.

I know. Everybody thinks this guy is some kind of a god. But looking at it from a biz stand point, he is a commodity. Just another piece of the team. He alone won't get us to the play offs. And he alone won't brings people to the ball park if we don't become a perenial play off team. Want proof? We have very good guys signed long term and we have Stanton. Is that a nearly full stadium you see at home games???

I dont think you get it. Signing Stanton long term won't change his salary for 2012 and 2013. It simply allows you to get his 2014-2017 at steep discounts.
