September 17, 201114 yr From MLBTR http://www.mlbtrader.../rosenthal.html Marlins GM Admin Beinfest has let it be known that he would like a chance at the Cubsposition. Rival executives say that Beinfest is unhappy with the recent reassignment of Jim Fleming the increasing involvement of owner Jeffrey Loria. The Cubs' level of interest in Beinfest is currently unknown. Wow
September 18, 201114 yr Loria the Steinbrenner of the south, lol. If only he had money like George. I'm not sure Loria is a big calzone guy either.

September 18, 201114 yr This Beinfest stuff probably deserves its own thread. Anyway, I saw this coming as soon as the announcement came that Loria and Samson would be taking on more control of the baseball decisions. David Samson? Seriously? Does he know anything about baseball? He only has his current position because of nepotism. He didn't even earn that and now he should have greater control over baseball moves. This team could become like the Orioles really quickly. A respectable payroll, but no brains.
September 18, 201114 yr That would be something. We complain for years about higher payroll, and when we finally get it, we suck due to management.

He didn't even earn that and now he should have greater control over baseball moves. Hey, all of the arm-chair GMs here may be about to get a taste of their amateur reality, courtesy of an insider/amateur. Then again, it might work (in the unlikely event it happens.) After all, Samson went to basketball games and sat in court-side seats paid for by his step-daddy and actually yelled at real NBA players when he was a kid. Obviously, he's an expert on all sports, so his advice should be absolutely magical. To his credit, he has kept the new stadium on-time and on-budget. The on-budget part being particularly important as the Marlins are responsible for every dime of cost over-runs. I like him as a severe and unrelenting construction taskmaster.
September 18, 201114 yr Of course we'll never know, wonder if this changes Vasquez' and McKeon's decisions, lol
September 19, 201114 yr High-profile names on Marlins wish list Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Jose Reyes headline the list of potential free agent position players expected to hit the market after the World Series. Already, all three have been mentioned as possible targets of the Marlins. In terms of making inquiries, that may end up being the case. One of the more realistic big names that clearly is on the Marlins’ radar is Aramis Ramirez, the Cubs’ 33-year-old third baseman. Internally, the Marlins already view Ramirez as a possible fit for a lineup looking to mix in an established veteran to a youthful squad that includes Logan Morrison, Gaby Sanchez and Mike Stanton. Ramirez is in the final season of a five-year, $75 million contract, which includes a club option of $16 million in 2012. Now, if the Cubs choose to exercise the ’12 option, Ramirez is free to void it and become a free agent. Ramirez would bring an established defensive presence and a right-handed power bat. The club could see an infield of Aramis Ramirez at third, Hanley Ramirez at shortstop, Omar Infante at second and Sanchez at first. While top prospect Matt Dominguez, 22, is getting some big league seasoning now, the addition of an established middle of the lineup hitter like Aramis Ramirez would give the rookie more time to develop. After a disappointing 2011, the Marlins are expected to be highly active in the offseason, addressing everything from their manager, coaching staff, Minor League operations and big league roster. In 2012, the franchise will unveil a new beginning, in their new, retractable-roof ballpark. With new revenue streams, payroll is expected to jump substantially — from $58 million to around $80 million. For the first time in more than a decade, big name free agents will be sought. The team will look for a power bat like Aramis Ramirez, but the larger focus will be on starting pitching. Specifically, left-handed starters. Already, C.J. Wilson is being talked about. The Marlins, according to sources, clearly will explore signing Wilson. As they will Aramis Ramirez. But the Rangers’ lefty isn’t the only pitcher the club will look at. They basically will check out the possibility of signing all available starting pitchers. As hard as it is for Florida fans to imagine, the possibility does exist that the team will make a pitch for the prize pitcher who could be out there, CC Sabathia, who could decide to opt out of his current contract. As intriguing as it would be for the Marlins to get into, say, the Pujols sweepstakes, chances are they’d look at Aramis Ramirez and C.J. Wilson instead. As disappointing as 2011 has been for the Marlins, the organization already is internally looking at what could be in ’12. The new stadium has created new optimism to lure in established stars. – Joe Frisaro http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com/2011/09/19/high-profile-names-on-marlins-wish-list/
September 19, 201114 yr Sounds like pie in the sky to me at this point. I wouldn't hold my breathe on this. Don't get me wrong I think they will make a splash in the free agent market. But can they afford to fill all our holes with them??? They seem to have a lot of holes to me

September 19, 201114 yr If Aramis Ramirez is a priority, the Marlins must not too enthusiastic about Dominguez. Ramirez will probably require a 2-year deal at the minimum. Oh, and was the Carlos Delgado signing more than a decade ago?
September 19, 201114 yr If Aramis Ramirez is a priority, the Marlins must not too enthusiastic about Dominguez. Ramirez will probably require a 2-year deal at the minimum. Oh, and was the Carlos Delgado signing more than a decade ago? I don't think it means they are down on dominguez in the long run. Just down on him being able to be a major league 3b at this age. I would prefer he spend 3 years in the minors anyways (hoping the dont sign Aramirez for longer than 3 years). If he needs three more years in AAA (after 350 PA there this year), they probably won't be needing him at all. He absolutely needs to be there in 2012 with 2013 a question mark. 2014 would be ridiculous. Remember that the Marlins were supposedly serious about him starting at 3B this year.

September 19, 201114 yr Just because we're the Marlins doesn't mean every prospect has to be in the bigs at 22
September 19, 201114 yr Just because we're the Marlins doesn't mean every prospect has to be in the bigs at 22 I wish this team would have figured that out BEFORE this season.
September 19, 201114 yr Just because we're the Marlins doesn't mean every prospect has to be in the bigs at 22 Show me another team that keeps its prospects in AAA for 3-4 seasons. He shouldn't be in the bigs at 22 (as I said), but he should be ready by 2013 at some point in the season if he is going to have a future with this franchise.

I don't care whether or not Dominguez has a future with this organization, I just want them to have a good third baseman and a good team. If we find another solution there, I won't shed any tears if a guy who projects to be Pedro Feliz isn't here. I just don't want this team to not consider potential solutions for the upcoming years because they have a guy in the minors who may in the next year or two develop into a major league ready player who may end up average. I'm not saying that's Ramirez because honestly I feel like he cashed it in a while ago, but third base is a clear place where this team can improve immediately by bringing in a good player.

If you're saying that he should either be ready by 2013 or likely won't ever be ready, then that's reasonable. But, the Marlins don't want to have a gaping hole at 3B next year. I don't mind the strategy of signing a guy like Aramis and having too many capable players. Dominguez can either become trade bait, or continue developing a la Ryan Howard. Sure, it might not be the absolute most efficient use of Dominguez's talent, but this team needs to compete next year, and I think signing Aramis for 2-3 years is a very reasonable move (depending on $$$/allocations of funds, obviously).

He's batting .308 with 25 HR for an AWFUL team and you think he cashed it in a while ago? You're more insufferable with every passing post.
