October 8, 201114 yr They have 5 more years of Ryan Howard, getting older and slower at $20MM for 3 years, and $25MM for the last 2. $25MM for Ryan Howard per year when he will be 35 and 36 years old. And his 37-year-old year is a $23MM club option with a $10MM buyout. According to BR-War, he's been worth more than 3 wins just ONE time in the last five years; according to Fangraphs, he's had over a 3 WAR just ONE time in the last four years. And he's only had a WAR over 4.6 one time based on either metric (the same year for both, 2007). As many said at the time, that deal is a morass that will plague them for a while. That's still 15%+ of their payroll.
October 8, 201114 yr Don't forget Halladay and Lee are aging as well. They also have to replace Oswalt, Rollins, Ibanez, Polanco and Madson.
October 8, 201114 yr Don't forget Halladay and Lee are aging as well. They also have to replace Oswalt, Rollins, Ibanez, Polanco and Madson. Halladay and Lee are awesome though. Ibanez will be replaced easily and Madson is a reliever so that shouldn't be overly difficult if they lose him. The Howard contract is the one that really sucks for them.
October 8, 201114 yr I just see the Phillies as a team that's going to decline. Yea, Lee and Halladay will be awesome, along with Hamels. THe rest of the team just seems bad, though. Really bad.
October 8, 201114 yr Laughing at Phillies fans posting that Manuel needs to go. They won a franchise record 102 games, yeah it's his fault that the Phillies suffer from "Atlanta Braves Syndrome" - great for the long season but can't win the short playoff series Ph*ck the phillies
October 8, 201114 yr If Phillies fans are going to be pissed off about playoff rules and eligibility, I'd be more concerned with the division series being only a best of five games set. Baseball really isn't suited for tournament-style play. I think they should extend the division series to seven games and make up the time by eliminating a couple of the postseason off-days.
October 8, 201114 yr Cards v Brew Crew Pujols v Fielder 2012 Marlins 3B v 2012 Marlins 1B :mischief Well let's hope so :lol And honestly after watching the Prince Fielder interview last night, I came to 2 conclusions. 1) I would LOVE to have Fielder here! 2) He LOVES Milwaukee too much.
October 8, 201114 yr not a cards fan but its nice to see the midwest teams doing so well. Dont really care who wins.. i think ill root for milwaukee

I agree with this. I'm not sure eliminating the postseason off-days will be (itself) beneficial, but I don't see a better solution. But the 5 game series just feels icky.

I'd much rather have Pujols than Fielder, and no way we're getting both of 'em 2. if he LOVES Milwaukee so much, he wouldn't have publicly stated "This is probably my last season in Milwaukee" a month ago
October 9, 201114 yr Loria should just sell a few more paintings and buy EVERY ELITE FA. Its just paint on a canvas bro Feel like the offseason between '96 and '97 all over again :mischief
October 9, 201114 yr I wouldn't say Francona was "incredible," but he was certainly better than McCarver. Now they just need to replace Buck and a Fox broadcast might be listenable.
October 9, 201114 yr for his first time in the booth! ...he was okay. A little too dry and too much hyperbole.
October 9, 201114 yr Brewers and Cards is going to be a great series. I would like to see some of the hatred spill over but I doubt it considering whats at stake. But then again, you have Morgan on the Brewers and hes not exactly known for thinking smart.
