Yoenis Cespedes to Athletics

Featured Replies

The A's have been going against their strict Moneyball tendency for years now. This signing makes sense for Beane and the A's.

They're moving the San Jose soon. They needed to add some sort of player that could be marketable. In comes Yoennes.

That's some bad marketing.

You know what's marketable?

Right now their pitch to the fans is "Come see that guy who threw that perfect game once and Rickie Week's brother lead your A's!" Their roster has absolutely no names.

I do think the per year figure is more than I would've been willing to pay. 6 years $36 million would've been a good number for the FIsh to sign him at, not 4 years.

I think the thought process from Cespedes' management team is that being 30 years when he hits the open market next time will allow him for a possible big payday in his prime if he pans out. Might not get that big payday at 32.

Unless he does what a lot of these foreign free agents do and just bomb out.

And Cespedes is basically a no name, as well.

I wouldn't call him a no-name, Erick. Almost everyone knows his name. However, they don't know his skill level.

Or how to pronounce his name.

The A's pioneered the approach - but the Rays have more money and more brains, and the Red Sox just plain have more money.

I'm fine with him not signing.

I'm Cuban and I watch a lot of the Series Nacional on TV and I think that he'll be an slightly above average player if he reaches his full potential...and I'm not sure if he'll reach that full potential or not.

We'll be fine with Boni's D and speed in the lineup.

Great, now Cuban-Americans have no reason to come see the marlins play baseball.

Well that was surprising... 4/36...? wtf Billy Beane?

I'd like to see us make a push for Soler now.

I don't know where that came from but I'm a Marlins fan first and then a fan of Cuban players...Marlins come above any player...

Not at the 27.5 mil figure I was reading...

Some people were making a big deal about it when we were going for Pujols but not Prince after Pujols signed, or something, cause of "Latin influence." Puma was being sarcastic, however.

Oh yeah, I heard and read the same thing but I'm telling you guys that very few Cubans were gonna buy tickets to the games because of Cespedes...

That was a misconception of the FO I think

I've heard people (not necessarily posters on this forum) who thought signing Cespedes would attract Cuban fans to the stadium, which I think is dumb.

I'm shocked they had the money to do this.

They are gambling he will be special. Use him in 2 years as serious trade bait.

I'm not really sure that the A's and Rays models are that similar. For example, I don't think there is really a precedent for how the Rays have handled their arbitration buyouts with Beane.

On top of that, I wouldn't necessarily say that the Rays have more money. I would actually suspect the opposite to be the case.

A ton of people on this forum have said that, actually.

Really dumb indeed...
