December 3, 201114 yr They'll have to give him two contracts, one for his bat and the other for his stomach. But really, he can always JUST LOSE WEIGHT. It's not super hard if being a professional athlete is what you do. Considering that most of us are expecting some better conditioning from our boys next season...I would expect everyone across the board to report to ST in better shape.
December 3, 201114 yr His dad (and Vaughn) was productive from age 28-32 and Prince is a better athlete. Vaughn and Cecil fell off a cliff during their age 33 and beyond seasons. Prince will outproduce Vaughn/Cecil in his 28-32 age and has a much better chance, IMO, of continuing that into ages 33+.. something his dad and Hit Dog did not do. He's been one of, if not the most, durable player in the majors the last 6 years (something other fatties werent early in their careers).. does that not count for anything? Those two players were not productive enough for the salary Prince is going to get. Cecil Fielder was no better than a 2 WAR player by the time he turned 29. Mo Vaughn was already well on his way to his rapid decline before joining the Mets; he was just a 2 WAR player both years with the Angels.
December 3, 201114 yr I'm not saying they were productive enough to command what prince is going to get.. has nothing to do with it.. All I'm saying is they were still performing to their career averages through their age 32 season.
December 3, 201114 yr I don't know why Mo Vaugn's name keeps being mentioned. Yes, besides the fact that he is fat, he came from an era that was rich with steroids... Any player coming from that era whose numbers fell off the deep end in such a short time period can't be taken seriously...IMO you can't compare the two players
December 3, 201114 yr If anything, the presence of steroid use would be a reason for production to not drop off.
December 3, 201114 yr I watched just about every Brewers game this year (my local team) and I can assure you Prince is not just some fat, out of shape, slugger. It's well known that he was hands down the strongest player in Mil and possibly all of MLB. His weight is not due to laziness or poor eating habits. Prince plays all out every single at-bat and in the field. He would be an instant fan favorite and a great clubhouse presence. I think he will get better for a few more years, plateau, and decline around age 35...which is older than a lot of you are saying. Believe in the man! You all will love him the minute he puts on a Marlins uniform. That said. Highly doubtful we get him.

December 3, 201114 yr Author Prince has averaged a 4 WAR over the last 5 seasons, and a 5 WAR over the last 3. Conversely, Albert has average a 8 WAR over the last 5 season, and a 7 WAR over the last 3. Prince is a very good player, but he's just not anywhere near Pujols' level.
December 3, 201114 yr His weight is not due to laziness or poor eating habits. If anything, the fact that it's largely genetic bodes poorly for his future, as there wouldn't be much he could do to get himself in shape.

December 3, 201114 yr I like how squall has all these strong opinions then when someone wants to actually debate it, all he has is "height difference" My whole point.. if Cecil and Mo can produce at their career averages for 5 years from age 28-32.. two guys who aren't nearly the athlete of Prince and two guys who weren't nearly as durable early in their careers as Prince.. why can't Prince perform at his career average for the next 5 years like they did? And if you give him a 7 year contract and he performs at an All Star level for the first 5 years of it (career avg), who TF cares about the last two?? You're telling me you won't give it to him because he may or may not perform the last 2 because other less athletic, less durable fatties fell off a cliff? Puuuhleeeease

Puuuhleeeease My point before wasn't simply that these guys weren't worth the money that Prince is about to get. My point was that... Mo Vaughn regressed at the age of 31. Cecil Fielder had a great year in 1990 and consistently regressed after that. By the age of 29, he was basically just a 2 WAR player. These players did regress and they regressed during the ages/timeframe you keep mentioning.
December 4, 201114 yr It's also worth noting that Prince Fielder has been inconsistent year-to-year throughout his big-league career. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4613&position=1B
December 4, 201114 yr As much as I'd like to have prince or albert I think its smarter to sign a few players for the price of one. I'd rather see two starting pitchers signed than prince or albert.
December 4, 201114 yr If Prince missed a lot of time in the past due to injuries, I'd buy all this fat talk.. but he hasn't, so I don't.
December 4, 201114 yr So you don't believe that, as he ages and becomes more naturally susceptible to injury, carrying around a large amount of weight on a small frame does not put him at more of a risk for injury?
December 4, 201114 yr From ages 26-29, his dad averaged 157.5 games per season. He wasn't injury prone either, since you keep bringing up Cecil Fielder for comparisons.
December 4, 201114 yr I think he'll be very, very productive over the next 5 years and has a better shot than previous fatties mentioned to continue success beyond 5 years. I think it's silly to assume a guy who plays as many games as anyone in baseball and who is coming off a near-MVP season at 27 years old won't continue to be an AS-caliber player for at least the next 5 years. Obviously fat people are more likely for injuries but he's also a strong, tough and athletic fat man who plays a non physically demanding position who has absolutely no injury history.

Because he had a tremendous season with the bat. He's basically subpar at every other aspect of the game, and despite the bombs he hits, the year-to-year #'s indicate that he's not a consistent hitter. In order to get great value from him, he needs to absolutely mash for 5 years because there's no upside, otherwise.
December 4, 201114 yr Don't get me wrong, i understand the other side of the argument.. I just get a little giddy thinking about a Hanley-Prince-Stanton 3-4-5 for the foreseeable future. I think really highly of his power, run producing and ability to get on base. The guy is a very talented hitter.
December 4, 201114 yr You think he gets that many years? I think he goes max 7 and wouldn't be surprised to see him sign a big 5 year deal so he can try to get another big contract down the line.
December 4, 201114 yr Author He's bad a .400+ OBP the last 3 years to go along with those Home Runs. Damn.
December 4, 201114 yr REPORT: Jays, Brewers, Rangers on Fielder's Short List Quote: It appears the Toronto Blue Jays are still in the running for free agent slugger Prince Fielder. According CBSCleveland.com, Fielder has shortened his list of possible destinations down to three teams that includes the Blue Jays, the Texas Rangers and the Milwaukee Brewers. And the report indicates the Jays are the favourites right now. The Blue Jays would like to add Fielder to complement AL home run king Jose Bautista on offence as well as solidify first base defensively. The Rangers could be that one bat away from a Word Series title after coming so close last season but they are also trying to re-sign starting pitcher C.J. Wilson. And the Brewers seem to be losing ground amid reports general manager Doug Melvin has not offered increased their offer to Fielder or even talked to his agent, Scott Boras since the general manager/ownership meetings in mid-November. Baseball's winter meetings begin in Dallas on Monday and Fielder is sure to be a topic of conversation among the various general managers. Via: http://tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=381952
December 4, 201114 yr I'd like to see him play for the Jays. Going to the AL makes sense for him too.
