March 29, 201214 yr Don't know if this was posted The creator of the HR feature talks a bit about it. Honestly there's is one drawing in the video with what looks like colored water spouts (thinking like disney's world of color) and a marlin at the top that I totally would have been fine with over what we got.
March 29, 201214 yr Yeah since I instantly think of turn-of-the-century penny arcade games or carnival attractions when I think of a Marlin or the city of Miami. I must say, his original intention of the different levels of the fish corresponding with a single, double, triple or HR makes A LOT more sense considering the overall aesthetic.
March 29, 201214 yr That thing is horrid. On top of the fact that it is ridiculously stupid, they have a marlin doing flips on top. Since when do marlins do flips? Ugly uniforms, ugly HR feature and stupid little mascot. It's very vexing, the whole situation. Why does Loria insist on these stupid gimmicks? I guarantee Pujols took one good look at that HR feature, coupled with the uniforms, and ran to the Angels. Furthermore, why doesn't anyone mention that the outfield wall is freaking neon-green?!

Oh, stop whining. Go root for a team with a more generic mascot and stadium if it bothers you that much.

Yea seriously, it feels like more people that claim to be "fans" of the Marlins bitch and moan about the HR Feature and Stadium in general than people outside of the state. Rather than be happy the Marlins get to remain in South FLA and that they now have a legit TOP OF THE LINE baseball park to play in people go on internet blogs and such and bitch and moan about colors, or sculpture, or uniforms..... bah. Sorry it really frustrates me when some of our own fans get caught up in the wrong details. I keep reading about folks in Broward and Palm beach areas saying they will no longer support the team? WTH is that? Pisses me off. Sorry. /end Rant

As someone who has actually been to Angels games that place is pretty much full on gimmick ........ it's proximity to Disney shows ....... the "Big A" is a bit of a dump ......... while they don't have a mascot, they do have a rally monkey complete with video board animation for his presence ........ it's not like they'd do anything gimmicky being the tradition heavy Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim .... not like they'd have an "Outfield Extravaganza" that triggers a 90 ft "geyser", fireworks, etc. Since when does a apple rise and then lower down? I'd think the extra 50 or so million had more to do with Pujols' decision. Yeah that.........

I'd think the extra 50 or so million had more to do with Pujols' decision. Yeah that......... Yes, I know about the rally monkey. Personally, I like it better than having a full blown rainbow-trout-as-a-mascot deal. The Angels uniforms are much better than ours. Talk about Disney, it looks like one of those Micky jerseys Disney sells. In fact, after looking at them online, the Mick jerseys are better. If Pujols would have gone with the money, he would have signed with the Marlins. Florida has zero income tax, where California has the second highest in the country (behind Hawaii). Therefore, he would have made much more money, having signed with the Marlins. It is estimated that with the ownership incentives the Marlins offered Pujols, and the lack of income tax, he would have made close to $300 million. Same thing goes for CJ Wilson, where the Marlins far surpassed the Angels in money, and would have been able to offer him a chance to pitch in the NL. Nevertheless, the gimmick direction the Marlins are taking won't last. It's not sustainable. Most people already dislike it, and a few years from now it will have no appeal. We should have gone in the direction of the Yankees and hoped to become a more serious club. I would at least be appeased if they remove all the colors of the rainbow off of our mascot and jerseys. If they would knock down that monstrosity of a HR feature, I'd be all the happier!
March 30, 201214 yr It is estimated that with the ownership incentives the Marlins offered Pujols, and the lack of income tax, he would have made close to $300 million. Estimated by which reliable and credible source? Samson said otherwise, emphatically and in great detail: Once the Marlins were able to reach agreement with Mark Buehrle on Wednesday, the team knew it no longer was in the Albert Pujols Sweepstakes. Marlins president David Samson briefly addressed the pursuit of Pujols on Friday after the club announced the signing of Buehrle to a four-year, $58 million contract. A report in USA Today said Miami presented Pujols with a bid of $275 million over 10 years. Pujols agreed to a 10-year, $254 million deal with the Angels on Thursday, the final day of the Winter Meetings in Dallas. Samson said the Marlins' offer was for 10 years and "a hair" over $200 million. Many believed the package was $210 million. "From our standpoint, he's a signed player with Los Angeles," Samson said. "We're happy for him. But we're happier for us." The Marlins met with Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano, several times in Dallas. The team informed Pujols' camp that its offer was off the table on Wednesday afternoon, once news broke that Buehrle would be headed to Miami. "We withdrew our offer after we were able to secure Mark Buehrle," Samson said. "We had a feeling the whole time that [signing Pujols] was not going to work. As the week progressed, we went to where we were comfortable, and clearly it was nowhere near what he eventually got from Los Angeles." http://mlb.mlb.com/n...ws_mlb&c_id=mlb At he time, it was thought that he signed for 254 million. Knock off 10% for CA state income taxes, and 229 million is still 20-30 million more than the Marlins offered. Turns out that the maximum value of the contract is more like 269 million. http://espn.go.com/l...h-240m-10-years Minus 10%, and 242 million is 30-40 million more than the Marlins offered. No surprise that Albert isn't here. Same thing goes for CJ Wilson Once again, says who? CJ Wilson explicitly said otherwise: Thursday morning, Wilson's camp informed the Marlins that in spite of them having the best deal on the table the left-hander wanted to play at home. A Southern California native, Wilson accepted the Angels' reported five-year, $77.5 million offer. "The Marlins were really the frontrunner in a lot of ways," Wilson said. "If it was just about money, I'd be a Marlin, straight up, because they offered more money. They have a great situation. It was a win-win for me with the Angels and the Marlins in the end. The Marlins were 100 percent awesome, 100 percent classy, and I feel like they're absolutely going in the right direction." http://articles.sun-...st-josh-johnson Not a word in there about any "gimmick direction," as you put it, of the Marlins. Nothing but high praise of the "right direction," but he wanted to play at home. It happens. Javier Vazquez didn't just want to play near home in 2011, he wanted to be home in 2012, foregoing any chance of another one-year deal with us for our biggest year in 20 years. Would you attribute that to the HR feature and/or the uniforms/colors, also? If you're so mad at the Marlins that you have to make stuff up about why this or that player didn't sign here, then maybe you would be happier rooting for some other club.
March 30, 201214 yr I guarantee Pujols took one good look at that HR feature, coupled with the uniforms, and ran to the Angels. Yup.

Hopefully it grows on us... or stanton breaks it I'm sure Grooms is no stranger to critisism. I read he had another statue at a government building in Denver removed because it was too controversial. Nobody is hurting this guys feelings... The joke is on everyone else, considering how much he was paid to create this thing.

He has to be happy that it's generated some chatter about him, never mind a nice paycheck. I find it hilarious that the only controversial item in the entire park is the direct result of a government diktat that "public art" be present in all government-financed buildings, without which the thing probably wouldn't exist at all. Talk about unintended consequences. And don't forget, this particular "art" was duly approved after long deliberation and chin-pulling by the appropriate government functionaries who were very serious and meticulous while they were going about the business of bringing us "art" that is worthy of viewing by the great unwashed masses like all of us fans who know nothing of such great and weighty things. Like I said, I like it. Totally tacky. Perfect for Miami. It's entertaining, which is probably why Loria likes it. It winds up being good for business in a PT Barnum, carnival, circus sort of way, even though the original intent was to expose all of us yahoos in the proletariat to "art." Not exactly what the geniuses in government probably had in mind, but, close enough for government work. Loria lucked out. From his vantage point, it's a $3.5 million monstrosity that will probably assist in selling one hell of a lot of tickets, which is the whole point, isn't it? And, I'll note, the "public art" chunk of the budget is also financed by, guess who? Yes, you are correct, our good buddies, the tourists, via hotel bed taxes. "Public art" may be only 1% of the whole enchilada, but they're still paying through the nose for every dime of it. Please be nice to tourists, they'll be paying for our beautiful park and "art" for many years.
