May 26, 201214 yr Bell is definitely a concern. This game was against a team he's pretty used to seeing and he couldn't get through it. It's also not the first time he gets pulled against SF. Cishek got credited for a "blown save" on the West Coast trip when all he did was bail Heath Bell out of a loss that night.

I lived in San Diego and followed the Padres during his entire tenure there. His fastball has gotten extremely flat and his changeup isn't dancing anywhere close to as much as it used to as early as last year. I wonder what happened. At first, I really did think he was hurt. It's kind of the only logical explanation.

I didn't watch him much when he was on the west coast, but now I think his delivery is one of the ugliest in baseball.
May 26, 201214 yr Heath Bell has blown 6 saves this year, as far as I'm concerned. What's it going to take to get him out of the closer's role? He absolutely sucks now. Hitters don't miss his fastball and they don't chase his breaking ball. No need to be stupid and stay loyal because you gave him a bad contract. Either go with Cishek or go with a committee (we have the arms to do this). For what it's worth, Ozzie kept putting Jenks out there a couple of years ago when he was struggling. He even used the "he's my guy" line. Loria and Beinfest will intervene at some point if things get out of hand, but I think Bell has some leash left since this is the first disaster outing he's had for a couple of games.
May 26, 201214 yr I went ahead and voted for GS. It was really close, but he's the man so I just gave it to him.
May 26, 201214 yr On the radio postgame they interviewed Cishek. He admitted that the two strikes he pitched in the zone were meant to be outside, but he missed the mark in exactly the way St. Claire told him not to. The catcher was set up outside, as the directive was to pitch around him and hope he might chase. He felt really lucky that Melky didn't swing at either of them. I think this win had a lot to do with poor play by the Giants. They stranded a lot of runners. Great job by Jennings! He looked good.
May 26, 201214 yr Well, damn, a closer saying he f***ed up slightly even when he got the job done? Cishek respect done risen.

Melky didn't swing because they initially looked like balls way off the plate.
May 26, 201214 yr It's almost like you can tell with bell from his first pitch. When he locates and gets the ball on a downward plane he not only hits spots but he throws 94-96. When he's not locating his fastball is flat and 91-93. And I've been saying the moron needs a changeup.
May 26, 201214 yr Saw the highlights on Quick Pitch, what's causing Bell's problems? We know because of his history he can be really good so what's the problem?

Besides, can any of you throw a 90 mph fastball? Huh?

May 26, 201214 yr Shutdowns/meltdowns are way better than saves/holds. Coming into the night, Bell had 6 shutdowns to 6 meltdowns. Tonight was his 7th meltdown. http://www.fangraphs...#winprobability Under SD/MD. Amazing how much worse he's gotten. His peripherals had gotten worse last year, but this year he's just downright terrible. I mean the speed of his fastball hasn't even changed that much since 2007, it's like he's just trying to get the ball over the plate.
May 26, 201214 yr Thank God for Cishek, because Bell is a fat useless excuse of a pitcher. Bell needs to retire from baseball, you hear all the boos when he was comming off the mound, he is public enemy number 1 poor piggy..

His velocity seems fine but man does he get hit hard. Hitters look like they're seeing the ball very well off him.
May 26, 201214 yr I've never been one of those "don't boo your own players" guys. I'm glad that Bell got booed last night.
May 26, 201214 yr I voted for Cogs. When he hit that homer, I was leaving the room to get something and I heard sound from laptop and I said 'Good Lord' cause I thought Mr. Porno came up and jacked one on first pitch.
