April 12, 201313 yr Then why was the stadium so important ? You can't answer that one without admitting that either Loria was to [sic] stupid to know this fanbase wouldn't turnout, or he was planning this all along and the fans made it easy for him to use the "they didn't show up" excuse to strip the team. It's already been answered. Loria AND EVERYONE ELSE on the planet was mistaken about turnout for the new park. But, keep bashing away. We've all figured out that you're indefatigable, facts notwithstanding. I especially like the "or he was planning this all along" straw-man. Nice touch. Everyone knows that businessmen plan to fail and it's really pleasant to lose 47 mill in mere 12 months.
April 12, 201313 yr Do you actually live down there? People only realized there was a "fan problem" in south florida just now?? If you think that the sole reason attendance stunk in the past was because people were worried about getting rained on you're nuts. It has always been a crappy sports town. About 80 blocks north of the stadium. Tell Rich and Tommy and Admin and David and Jeffrey and everyone else who talked incessantly for a year or more about how the roof and a/c would solve the attendance problem. No more rain, no more humidity, no more delays, no more crummy stadium with lousy sight-lines, you could go to a game and know it would be played on time and enjoy it in a real baseball stadium without sweating. Fan nirvana. I agreed with them at the time that that should work. I no longer do. And they didn't expect sellouts all year, that's another myth. But there's also no way they expected a 72% sell rate in a small stadium, with only 46% butts in the seats. Yes, this is a crappy sports town. This stadium proves it. As long as "fans" want to boycott, they will suffer crappy, losing teams -- the only thing that counts is revenue. While national TV revenue will improve by 25 mill next year and we'll owe less to guys who aren't here, local stadium revenue is always the paramount variable. fair enough. although Loria & Co. also reeeeally wanted a stadium so I'm pretty sure they're going to paint a glorious picture of how perfect things will be if we could just get it built. and look all those things will still be true in the coming seasons. i think (hope) that more and more people will come eventually, it's a wonderful place to watch a game. Loria is just not a particularly good part of this equation.
April 12, 201313 yr You're leaving out the part where season ticket holders more than doubled between 2011 and 2012. As I think BroncoBob said, accurately and when it was happening, IIRC, most of that increase was speculative and done by season-ticket holders doubling-up on tickets. Didn't work. Their season-ticket fan base was and remains 5K, irrespective of temporary fluctuations for whatever reason. Never thought we would see a Bronco Bob comment as a testimonial. But it's OK, because he had his seats in the outfield.
April 12, 201313 yr The fan base in Miami sucks for baseball. Building it up to be a good fan base is a process. The stadium should have helped with that. Like HotCorner said, it wasn't going to happen over night. It's too late now, though. Unless Loria changes, as long as he is the owner, baseball will not work in Miami. There has to be change.
April 12, 201313 yr Baseball will never work in Miami. That's just my opinion. Before anyone calls me ignorant or retarded again.

Can't we at least change Beinfest and the scouting crew? Based on the mercurial merry-go-round of managers we've had the past decade, you would think Loria would be interested in changing one of the more important components of a major league organization.
April 12, 201313 yr If the team is this lousy year after year, well how long will it be Admin that you can justify calling it Marlinsbaseball.com ? You would be better suited to call it something different in order to increase your clicks and in turn your return on your advertisement. If I ran this site for profit, I would've stopped 20 years ago when it started. I don't make money on this, I lose money on it.And for that, schmucks like me are Grateful for a place discuss my favorite team.
April 12, 201313 yr New park location cuts off 40% of Marlin's previous fan base. Marlin's plan to replace them with a Hispanic base has failed. The only hope for significant attendance is HIspanic ownership of the team. TV ratings show that the Marlins no longer have a real fan base. Oh not this shit again!
April 12, 201313 yr Baseball will never work in Miami. That's just my opinion. Before anyone calls me ignorant or retarded again. You're already wrong. It did work. We had the 7th best attendance the in 93. And then 10th the following season. And then 11th the season we won it all after it dropped down the previous two seasons. What reasons do you think it will not work?

April 12, 201313 yr Dear Anonymous: Last I checked an opinion can't be wrong or right. But I'll entertain you if you like. 1993 - Brand new product, ooh let's see the shiny new baseball team 1994 - Still kinda new but already dropping down 1997 - Championship team, and considering how good they were -- 11th is pretty poor What happened since then? Last I checked, we were the 2003 champions (28th in attendance). We had a winning record from 2003-2005. 2004 (26th in attendance), 2005 (28th in attendance). Oh by the way, Loria spent and signed Delgado before that 2005 season as well. We had a brand new ballpark with a roster full of big names that the casual fan loves to have. What did that get us? 18th in attendance. if your only evidence of baseball working in Miami is the 1993 and 1994 seasons, then well that's not much. But again, it's my opinion. You have your opinion.
April 12, 201313 yr I think the biggest issue here is why the heck is your Seattle friend using Internet explorer?
April 12, 201313 yr I attribute it to the average Marlin fan being too stupid to be able to figure out how to get to the ballpark. Or park his car. That's pretty complicated stuff. It's new, ya know? Takes years to figure this junk out. Maybe decades.

What did that get us? 18th in attendance. Opinions can be wrong. Fact is, we were 7th and 10th in attendance in back to back seasons. And then 11th the year we won the WS. Within the first 5 seasons we opened up, we did well in attendance in 3 of the 5 seasons. So, baseball did work in Florida. It's more evidence than what you've provided. That's just fact. I don't disagree that the attendance is bad now. So, I don't see why you point out those numbers. I said building up the fan base will be a process. So again, why do you think it will NEVER work?

April 12, 201313 yr Not good at recognizing sarcasm, eh? No, I didn't know you were being sarcastic. It's tough to tell online.
April 13, 201313 yr I'm a Marlins fan and I don't really hate or even dislike Loria to the extremity some people on here do, but there's no way I'd go to the ballpark this year to watch a game. Unless it's free, that is. It's almost impossible to blame the fans for lack of support, at this point. The owner isn't obligated to do anything specific. The fans also aren't obligated to support consistent mediocrity. This season isn't even mediocrity; it's just pretty bad. And I do feel like the offseason moves were necessary, which is fine. I'm not going this year. I'll watch on TV. Unless they're getting blown out, in which case I'll change the channel. I've learned not to take it too seriously anymore. Being a Panthers fan taught me that. It'll be interesting to see the attendance #'s if this team ever has a good owner one day. He's done some good things, sure, but he's not a good owner. He's one of the worst owners in sports.
