Parts of the ballpark were a ghost town at tonight's game

Featured Replies

I just got back from the game, and I don't know what the official attendance figures were, but parts of the ballpark looked like a ghost town. There was hardly anyone sitting in the upper decks. Whole sections of the top deck were completely empty (not even a single person.) In the bottom decks, there were huge gaps in some areas.

I say that the crowd size felt a lot like the one for the Marlins/FIU game, where 10,000 people attended.

I heard police officers who were there maintaining control and directing traffic discussing with fans how bad the team was. Behind me in my section (Section 23) there were people wearing paper bags over their heads, and cries of "Go Heat" could be heard every time the team made a bad play. It was definitely not the most cheerful atmosphere I've ever seen.

This is the sad state of major league baseball in Miami right now. It's so sad, and so unneccessary. Sometimes I really wish Loria had taken the team to Las Vegas or San Antonio.

ok no.

how about just get rid of loria?

ASOT, it wouldn't have made a difference. Loria is so bad that he would have found a way to alienate any fan base, no matter where he took the team. People don't feel like going when they feel that the ownership has nothing but contempt for them.

It is not a Miami fans problem, it is an ownership problem. I talked to a lot of people at the ballpark and their main complaint was that they feel Loria doesn't give a sh*t about them or about the team.

That's a foolish comment. Your not a fan of baseball in South Florida if you'd rather see it get relocated.

Not at all.

do people really think solano is a legit answer at second? i like him but hes an empty batting average hitter.

I would rather see Coghlan go out there and fail than Solano- but eh. Same shit different smell.

At least Coghlans shit was once Stone Crab while Solanos never been more than Fish McBites.

We agree to disagree. I have some sliver of hope Cogs can put up a high OBP and hit for the occassional double.

I'm not sure Solano knows he has to make a left turn at 1B to get to 2B on offense.

It's both the fans and ownership. FO went out and spent last year, people still didn't show up. They spent in 05, people didn't show up. The casual fan has made excuse after excuse after excuse not to go, they had none last year until mid-June when the team started to tank. It's not just the ownership.

That's such a dumb comment. Within 5 years, Loria will be gone and the Marlins will be here forever. If you can't put up with a few bad seasons, then you aren't much of a baseball fan.

South Florida is a bandwagon, place to be seen fan base. We didn't show up last year, or the year before, or the year before, or..... 3 owners, the same problems. "Fans" making excuses on why they don't go to the games. This is just the new and improved set of excuses.

Just so there is no confusion, this message is brought to you by the person that would be at the front of the line for this ownership's/FO lynching.

And he got the stadium built.

Most alleged "fans" are idiots. Not one of them can stand a 47 mill loss, yet they all bitch and moan as if they could and a 47 mill loss is nothing and should be ignored. That ain't the way it works.

Loria obviously cares about winning and he'd be wise to just ignore the crackpots. His latest PR campaign is probably a waste of time and money. Just let the plan work over the next couple of years.

Whether fans will ever show up here, even for a winner remains to be seen and Loria has very little to do with it.

But at what point does he start holding on and signing these future key guys, like Fernadez, Yelich and Stanton if you still count him. Try to win while prospects are cheap then Trade them when they start costing money? Is it going to be a one year push then rebuild if the team doesn't win, like last year?

Not that I don't think Loria cares about winning but not replacing the FO that has been mostly subpar with a few hits here and there is not helping your cause if your loria. There's only so many times you can replace a manager, turnover a roster.

For the record, i doI appreciate the things Loria has done for the franchise, like the ballpark,

Not everyone enjoys being in an abusive relationship. There used to be Marlins fans ... but most have been turned off and chased away. It's very possible that those fans have had enough and will never be back, but it's ridiculous to claim that 3 to 4 months worth of overspending for mediocre talent proves anything other than that Loria never had any intention of following through on his promise to increase our payroll if the public coffers were pilfered to build him a new stadium.

Horsefeathers.

There has never been any significant base of paying Marlins fans and there still isn't to this day. About 5,000 before and after the stadium. Pitiful.

And who was "pilfered"? Tourists? If you want to make the argument that someone was "pilfered" the logical objects of that are people who work in the local hotel industry -- they are the ones who suffer from lower employment than would otherwise be the case in the absence of the 6% hotel-bed tax (1% of ) which pays for the stadium. But, that tax was enacted long ago and the stadium didn't raise it one iota, unlike what the Dolphins want to do.

Loria will spend money only as revenue justifies it, as they have repeatedly said. When they get optimistic and stick their necks out and then get them chopped off to the tune of 47 mill when the fans don't show up they have to cut back drastically. '12 was a total financial disaster. Until fans figure this simple equation out, it will continue to be the case, no matter who owns the team.

This ain't New York and Loria ain't Steinbrenner. And there are at least 10 MLB owners with equally lousy records -- starting with the Cubs. Fans can either show up or watch the cycle repeat ad infinitum, no owner will tolerate large losses.

Toronto Blue Jays attendance 2012 2,099,663, avg 25,922

Miami Marlins 2012 attendance 2219444, avg 27,401

Result: Blue Jays sign and trade to win, Marlins get rid of players. People showed up, maybe not enough to support a $100 million payroll, but enough not to have to endure another embarrassing display of inept management. This time, don't blame the fans, regardless of any rationalization, this one is only partly on the fans-mostly on the owner, and who he is. How many times does one have to hit their head in a wall to realize it hurts.

I'm pretty sure more people ACTUALLY showed up to Toronto's games rather than bought a ticket and said, "fuck it we ain't going" as was the case with the Fish. "Turnstile Clicks"

People doing go for spending just because money was spent. They go for spending when that spending because the spending causes winning. Spending money and losing doesn't count.

Not sure how you can be so sure. If you notice, many games in other places have loads of empty seats, while attendance figures are higher. Toronto is one of those places where the blue seats have been empty in vast quantities. We'll see if this year for them, if they win, will be different. I really do not care because we are stuck with our reality of ownership, regardless of how other owners operate, but most places are not Wrigley, Fenway or St Louis.

I understand what you are saying about the fans but that is also a marketing problem. The 47 million, sorry can go with that number based on the organizations history of jiggling numbers. They might have lost money but the FO signed those players and their contracts. Maybe, just maybe a decent FO would help the team, along with keeping Jeffy out of the public eye.

Still the team could have been much more competitive this year had the FO not stupidly banked on selling out all last season. Then when it didn't happen we had to blow it up.
