April 28, 201311 yr WE WIN, WE WIN, WE WIN Stanton is back, baby!!!! Sweet mother of God, the Kid really is back!!!
April 28, 201311 yr Stanton is so weird. He does this s*** every year: sucks ass until the end of April then just becomes Stanton. Good start for Nolasco. He sucks, though so it doesn't matter if we treat him like shit.
April 28, 201311 yr MYKE STANDON HAS GIVEN UP GUISE. HE OBVI DOESNT WANT TO BE HEAR. NICK GREEN IS A WINNAR! #KEEPER
April 28, 201311 yr I'm starting to think that Cishek is struggling enough against LHB that he should be out of the closer's role and rather used more situationally against RHB.

April 29, 201311 yr Fo sho, homey! Pierre still wants out, though. Pierre signed here hoping he'd be traded too. Maybe then someone would have wanted him. Sucking is all part of HIS plan. Just like Heath Bell.

April 29, 201311 yr As for Cishek, his problems against lefties are a bit weird. The #'s guy would probably say that his .BABIP is simply inflated against lefties and that's the problem. The two HR's given up might just be two bad pitches. Cishek rarely ever gives up HR's. Cishek also has a better K rate against lefties than he does against righties, which means that he can get them to swing-and-miss. However, the arm angle and the fact that he's just fastball-slider guy makes him more hittable against lefties, as well. Stuff wise, Ramos probably profiles more like a closer long-term, in terms of how closers are modernly used. Ramos has a + changeup that allows him to get lefties out at a better clip. Ramos actually has four + pitches when he's bringing it at 95-96. That's actually pretty rare for a reliever. All three of his offspeed pitches are good. His velocity seems to come and go, however, (I'm guessing it was just cold weather early in the year that played a role in that) and his walk rate is rather high. He's also more prone to giving up HR's than Cishek is despite the early season results.
April 29, 201311 yr Cishek also has been walking LHB at a greater rate than RHB both this year and last. The batted ball data shows that he simply gets hit harder by LHB too (LD% is sky high this season and was double for LHB last season). I think having a defined closer's role is dumb overall, but if the Marlins are going to do it, I'd rather not automatically hand the ball to a guy in any save situation who has some problems getting lefties out.

Walk rate was high, but so was the K rate. The 22.7 LD% against is rather high as well, but should not result in a .411 .BABIP. He had a 3.09 FIP against lefties last year. In 2011, lefties had a .220/.311/.350 slash rate against him that year. I think it's too early to say he absolutely can't get lefties out, but there are warning signs for sure, at this point. They have hit him really hard this year.
April 29, 201311 yr I just don't get how Stanton goes from looking like he has no business being in the majors to mashing. So fucking frustrating.

They have hit him really hard this year. The batted ball data from 2012 against LHB correlates roughly to a .350 BABIP. Now that's not .411 but one of the problems with batted ball stats is that they don't specify how well struck ground balls are. In general, I'm more skeptical of "BABIP inflation" than most people are. Although, variables like defense (which was terrible last season) do certainly factor in as well. As far the 2011 numbers go, that's something I noticed myself earlier. My only guess is that something changed with his delivery/arm angle between 2011 and 2012. However, Cishek's track record against lefties in 2012 is probably enough to suggest that what is happening this year might be a cause for concern. This is not to say that he's a bad pitcher, but he might not be well suited for the closer's role.
