June 1, 201313 yr Since the Marlins make decisions by throwing at a dart board or spinning a wheel (depends on the mood on a certain day) We need to make some new decisions. Who should be DFA'd next? if not listed, please give your suggestions!
June 1, 201313 yr All at once. But realistically none of them because no one is going to trade a player for them and the Marlins wont eat their modest salaries.
June 1, 201313 yr Gorkys Hernandez I thought of him the other day, im almost shocked he hasn't had an opportunity yet considering all the injuries we've had. His stock has seemingly plummeted with our front office who was all goo goo gaga over him a year ago.
June 1, 201313 yr Polanco and Pierre both suck and are useless. My grandmother has a better arm than Pierre at this point. Homer Simpson could hit a ball to the outfield at him and end up at third base. Polanco is not a good defender anymore and is a terrible hitter. Plus he costs the team extra money since they have to order special batting helmets to fit on his giant ugly head. Mathis is here to show Brantly how to play defense but I hope Brantly isn't taking notes from him on how to hit. If all 3 go that is fine but ateast Pierre and beach ball head polanco.
June 1, 201313 yr Mathis! How is the guy even still,in the league? Lifetime average under .200 and he has 8 years in the league, that's amazing.
June 2, 201313 yr Brown or Lucas isn't a choice? As much as I hate to say it looks Mathis is going to stay! He'll be catching the youngsters
June 2, 201313 yr Brown or Lucas isn't a choice? As much as I hate to say it looks Mathis is going to stay! He'll be catching the youngsters Mathis hits fine to be batting 8th so as long as he provides the defense he does then I don't want to see him go. Brantly needs to be schooled on how to play the position and Mathis is one of the best defensive catchers in the game maybe even the best. So as long as he hits 8th I'm fine with him. The one who really needs to pick it up with the bat is hecheverria because I compare him to Ozzie smith but right now he is more like Try Ordonez.
June 2, 201313 yr "Maybe the best" - two Molina brothers still play, Salvador Perez of the Royals is incredible (from what I've seen), etc etc. But I will agree he can teach Brant some things.

Mathis doesnt hit good enough for any spot in the lineup. He is statistically one of the worst hitters in the history of major league baseball. He is also an average at best defensive catcher.

The only thing he can teach Brantly is how to be perennially horrible at your job while somehow managing to hold on to it.

Keep Tino on Brantly for hitting.
June 3, 201313 yr Mathis does not belong here. At least Pierre should be here (not necessarily playing every day) and allowed to be retired as a Marlins for old times sake.
June 3, 201313 yr Mathis the best defensive catcher in the game?lol!!!! I said one of the best. Open your eyes. And YES.
June 3, 201313 yr But hes not. He is one of the worst hitters of all time and is average at best defensively.
June 3, 201313 yr Mathis the best defensive catcher in the game?lol!!!! I said one of the best. Open your eyes. And YES.Mathis reputation as a "good" catcher aren't really for anything on his defense ... but are for his leadership, game calling, mentoring, stuff like that. The stuff that this FO loved about veterans like helms, Dobbs, and Pierre. And I'll give him that, Ill agree with it. But defensively, as in throwing out runners, blocking the plate, preventing passed balls etc, he's not really anything.
June 3, 201313 yr He's better than Olivo. And he's light speed ahead of Brantly. So he can teach him a thing or two except how to swing the stick.
June 3, 201313 yr Mathis isn't going to be DFA'd. The Marlins really wanted his terrible production when they got him from Toronto. They wanted him so much that they took him knowing that he's also under contract for next year. Jeff Mathis is the new "He's Our Guy!" Juan Pierre and Placido Polanco will not be here all year. At least I'm hoping...
June 3, 201313 yr Mathis is definitely the new he's our guy! Just a thought, he totally reminds me of a prototypical bullpen catcher. Catches well, works with all our pitchers, gives good advice but almost like a secondary coach, and provides zero contributions offensively. Jeff Mathis is the equivalent of a team having their bullpen catcher on the active roster. Sad but kinda funny.
June 3, 201313 yr After an RBI triple the other day, he's hitting a whopping .080. There's a reason he's never been paid more than 1.7 mill/year. The new Wes Helms.
