Andrew Heaney Watch

Featured Replies

* The Marlins have a former No. 1 pick knocking on the door to get his first big league call-up. Andrew Heaney, taken ninth overall in 2012, is making a start at Triple-A New Orleans on Saturday.

Heaney, who turned 23 on Thursday, is now lined up in the same rotation spot as Randy Wolf. Before his last outing, he was lined up with Nathan Eovaldi, who threw Friday at the Cubs.

Perhaps this will be Heaney’s final start for New Orleans. If it is, the lefty could be ready to arrive in Miami for the homestand against the Pirates, which begins on June 13.

Eovaldi should pitch in the opener against the Pirates, and Wolf is in line to pitch the middle game. Could Heaney change those plans?

Frisaro was right on the money with his triple-A promotion. I would be very surprised if he was wrong about this... Although if Wolf has a good start this weekend I wish they would move Turner.

Heaney should be taking Turner's spot in reality. Wolf > Turner

Time to bring Heaney up and hope he can replace Turner. Needs to start Friday against the Pirates, assuming Koehler and Eovaldi will pitch against the Rangers. The kid is ready. We can't stay in the race too much longer throwing Turner and Wolf out there on a regular basis. Heaney needs to replace one of them.

You will likely get your wish.

Isn't Turner out of options?

Which means Wolf will most likely be the one to be moved. I wonder if they will try and keep wolf up and potentially move slowey (DFA) instead.

Could also just send down ... ... who the fuck is in our bullpen right now?

Cishek, Ramos, Dunn, Morris, Slowey, Jennings ... Hatcher. Can send Hatcher down, move Wolf to bullpen. Probably won't happen, though.

Didn't even think of Hatcher.

But Red seems to love him (as his very frequent use would suggest) so who knows.

The other question is, who gets sent down when Kevin Gregg comes up? :|

Cishek obviously. Gregg is an accomplished closer!

Oh, good point, hadn't thought about that.

In all seriousness, at that point, probably Wolf or Slowey.

Based on performance, that's the most likely scenario. Wolf would become the long man and Slowey may bite the dust unfortunately.

Isn't Gregg getting bitched slapped by minor league hitters right now?

Second outing he had a 1-2-3 inning with 2 K's.

Latest is that Heaney is now being rested tonight.

Two sources with the organization said Heaney is just getting a rest.

“Counting spring training and Double-A (53.2 innings), he’s pitched a lot of innings, one of the sources said. “They just want to pace him.

Then tomorrow he gets called up and we're all supposed to be surprised. That's so Marlins! Just tell us he's coming...

ya thats bullshit. super 2 deadline is passed and we have 2 maybe 3 guys that shouldn't be in our rotation. he will pitch sometime soon.

Andrew Heaney was scratched from Thursday's scheduled start with Triple A New Orleans, and it won't be the last time his turn is skipped as the Marlins take measures to preserve the lefty's arm for September.

"We decided a few weeks ago we were going to skip a start here and there (with Heaney)," said Marty Scott, the Marlins' vice president of player development. "This is the first of several. We'll probably do this again in July and one more time in August."

There has been growing speculation about when the Marlins will call up their top pitching prospect, who is continuing to dominate in the minors. But Scott said the decision to scratch Heaney from his scheduled start Thursday had nothing to do with a pending call-up.

"Don't read too much into it," he said.

Rather, Scott said the Marlins want to make sure Heaney is still available to pitch for them in September, especially if the team is still in playoff contention.

Like Jose Fernandez last season, Heaney has a prescribed innings limit of 160-170 innings this season, Scott said. He's already totaled 72 2/3 innings between Double A Jacksonville and Triple A New Orleans. The Marlins want to avoid a situation like the one involving Stephen Strasburg in 2012 when the Nationals' pitcher was shut down in early September even though the team was still in contention and reached the postseason.

Scott said Heaney has been informed of the Marlins' plans and is on board with the altered pitching schedule.

"This way, we don't have to worry about shutting him down in September," Scott said. "If we don't let him skip a couple of starts and rest up and guard these innings, we'd have to shut him down in September, and that's something we don't want to do. We don't want to have to shut him down in the middle of a pennant race."

Heaney's next scheduled start for the Zephyrs is June 19. His last previous start was June 7.

Heaney feels like he is ready to pitch in the majors, but would prefer to receive his promotion under the right conditions.

"I feel like I am (ready)," Heaney said in Thursday's article, "but I don't want to be ready to fill a spot. I want to be ready to compete and help the team win. They're in first place. I don't want them to bring me up as an experiment."

Ugh. Looks like we're going to be waiting at least 15 days to see him. Skipping this start, then one more start in triple-A, then another 5 days until he starts in Miami. Looks like they're buying some time to see if Wolf/Turner sink or swim.

We already know how that will turn out, Marlins will be exiting the playoff race in no time. Combine this stupid decision (or non-decision) with exiling Dietrech's bat to New Orleans, and its just cause for shaking your head. It's WTF again and again with this management.

Oh good, management went Full Retard. Really? Save him so we'll have him ready to take us into the playoffs in September? I didn't realize we're all of a sudden good for playoff contention ever since we improved our rotation by swapping out Fernandez for Wolf/Turner. Just call the kid up already so fans will have a reason to come back to the park and improve ticket sales because lets get real, this team probably isn't nabbing a playoff slot so shut the kid down in September if you have to. At least with the slight bit of hope that the kid does give us a shot at contention, the slight hope and fun of being apart of a playoff run will drive in ticket sales than watching most of the rotation pitch losing efforts.

Not quite sure what you're saying, other than it seems you're getting carried away a bit. Look, the rotation with the exception of Alvarez is cratering. Wish all this babying of Heaney will come to an end, his arm is needed now, not in a month, not in two weeks, now. Not saying we'll be staying in the race with him though I think our chances are better, but without him and the staff performing as it currently is, the handwriting is definitely on the wall. Pace Heaney's innings with the big club, not at New Orleans.
