August 14, 201411 yr Author Hechavarria actually is the worst in the league, at his position, by a pretty wide margin. And according to Fangraphs, Saltalamacchia is the 20th best catcher in baseball. Granted, Saltalamacchia is far and away better than Hechavarria but still not what I would call "acceptable". Being better than a combo of Jeff Mathis and Rob Brantly shouldnt be celebrated, it should be expected. Teams can possibly win with these types of players, or a black hole at 2B and below average production at 1B, if they only have one of these problems. The Marlins have all of them, they are below to well below average in 4/5ths of their infield, and who knows what Casey McGehee will be next year if they retain him, although his production has seemed to normalize. Ozuna is a ML player and I am happy with him. I think he will be fine, in the long run, as I said. But he definitely needs to work on his plate discipline and pitch recognition. I could see this team hanging around by the skin of their teeth next year as they have this year, if they have the same benefit of players playing above their heads for certain lengths of time, but I just cant fathom how they could be a legitimate contender now or in the foreseeable future when they desperately need to upgrade over half of their everyday lineup. It's no secret how I feel about Hech, but he has been better (if only slightly) than these three so far this year: Everth Cabrera Jean Segura Xander Bogaerts
August 14, 201411 yr No, it will just be a better team so the chances are higher. But injuries happen.
August 14, 201411 yr $75 million East Caribbean dollars....so actually $28 million United States dollars
August 14, 201411 yr Remember, if Loria thinks we're close, he will spend money. He is always an optimist, and you know he'll have Jennings and Hill in his ear to spend. I don't doubt $75 Million is a possibility for a second.
August 14, 201411 yr Well payroll will go up because of arb so... But we're automatically shedding $10m from this year because no bell, furcal, dobbs marmol. So it's really like a $34m base before we add in increased arb etc which would still be well udner 75m.

August 15, 201411 yr Frisaro soecifically mentioned James Shields as a target, BTW... I don't think frisaro mentioning names as possible free agents targets while we are still in august holds any weight in reality.
August 15, 201411 yr Frisaro soecifically mentioned James Shields as a target, BTW... Frisaro isn't very smart.
August 15, 201411 yr Author Frisaro does this a lot in his blogs. "Marlins looking at Ted Williams, may increase payroll to include reanimation."
August 15, 201411 yr Joe Frisaro: Confirmed asshole. (In case you didn't already know) sounds like friendly ribbing to me. Sometimes this can be difficult to identify on the internet =/

August 15, 201411 yr Also, I'd like to say how awesome it is to be playing MEANINGFUL GAMES IN AUGUST FOR A CHANGE! Even if we are under .500 currently, it's just one game under right now. We're only 4 games out ... I mean, I'm not getting my hopes up, but it's nice to have these kinds of games late in the year rather than just watching just to watch players develop and the possibility of seeing Stanton hit one 450+, which is basically what the last 3 seasons have been at this point. Shoot, who knows, this team could surprise and end up snagging a playoff spot. *shrug*
August 15, 201411 yr 4 games out with Brad Penny never throwing a pitch for us ever again and we have 8 more games coming up against maybe the 3 worst teams in the league. We need to be at least only 2 out after this run. Plus Alvarez coming back is fairly huge.
August 15, 201411 yr I do not know if the Marlins are going to win one of the two wildcard spots. I believe they can if our ace is back to form. But the goal for this season should be to finish above .500 and aim for second place of the division. It's been a while since our team was in the hunt for a Playoff spot. Let's enjoy it and hope for the best.
August 15, 201411 yr I know 4 games is a not much but cracking .500 soon needs to be done. I think the best wild card team is 8 over.
August 15, 201411 yr If they can be a couple games out of the wild card by the end of August, who knows. The National League is very weak this year and anything is possible.

This. When it has been 11 years of playoff drought, you gotta take a advantage. How was this board like in 2009? Did you have wild card threads etc?
August 15, 201411 yr Do not misunderstand my message. That is my realistic goal for this season. I am rooting for the Marlins to make the Playoffs as the team should go for it.
